When you buy parts double check to make sure that they are compatible with each other. This is why pcpartpicker is a go to for beginners. Basically, you want the motherboard to fit the socket of your cpu, get whatever version of ram (ddr3/ddr4) is compatible with your mobo, if you have a video card make sure your power supply is strong enough to handle it, etc. It's really not all that hard once you know what to look for
