Yeah, they're just too damn big. I wish I could have gotten to play with it, it was the top-of-the-line config, still in the crate with everything it needed to get going.

I was going to put up the idea of building a museum around it, maybe using it as a cool novelty for parallel and vector programming classes, since the concepts are architecturally agnostic.

The main point being there's literally no reason to use a NeXT station instead of any of the many computing platforms available today, and that makes it useless.
>>
>>55382505
Useless means it has no possible use, which is blatantly false.
>>
>>55382505
There's no reason to use a push mower when you can buy an electric instead, that doesn't mean it still doesn't cut grass.

Literally the only reason you'd use a NeXT for that would be because you happened to have one lying around and had nothing better available, which is at the very least a fairly obscure situation.
>>
>>55382676
It's literally still being used for something and that literally makes it not useless
>implying I wouldn't literally buy one just for that
>>
>>55382559
>it has no actual, practical use-case
Sure it does, why do you think you need an SMP system for document processing, music notation, low-end development and other things that people did on those systems for years?
It does all the things it did and solves all the problems it feasibly could no differently than before, and still faster than a human can, that's pretty practical in my book.

>Except it being lots cheaper and takes less room in your storage shed?
That's some serious straw-grasping, I haven't seen nostalgic old people go that far. Besides, push mowers aren't really that much more space efficient or less costly, especially when you factor in replacement parts and maintenance and the fact that you can just hang your modern mower just as easily.

Hell, you can make the same argument for an old NeXTstation too, since the pizza box factor is extremely compact, nice looking, and you can have a complete setup for next to nothing.
>>
>>
>>55382709
Defining "useless" in that way makes the very term useless, though. You can always find some esoteric, theoretical use-case for anything, so by your definition literally nothing is ever useless. If you want to speak about uselessness in some general way, then you have to speak about general usefulness.

Probably not, It's in the eye of the beholder in the end, just look at the SGI hobbyist community, some of them are still using their mothballed gear for all kinds of "real" computational work, and they'll talk your ear off if you ask them why.

I'm novelty and curiosity-driven for sure with old shit, but after playing with it and putting it to work, I just have a hard time calling it truly useless, at least in the literal sense. I still use my newer systems all the time, they're very convenient, snappier, but ultimately, they don't feel all that different. Probably the biggest thing I miss when I mess around with an old box other than reasonable web capability is color in Excel, that shit really makes a difference at times.

Basically, I understand your perspective, but I'd rather agree to disagree, I just don't think it deserves to be knocked as much like that, there's all kinds of cool shit it can still do.

I am a hardcore porn addict with a 4.6TB collection, I shit you not. The existence of HD and 4K video destroyed my storage space.

I'm always paranoid I'll lose it, especially the incredibly hard to find shit. Might look into this for backup. I know it's linear and not for seek usage so I'd still keep it on my HDDs but this as a backup sounds good.

Iomega wanted to replace that shit ASAP, but Zip already caught on to an extent.

admittedly, I thought that shit was the future, but burning CDs killed it (shit, I even started using a CD-R like a flash drive, since there was a feature in XP that let you re-burn a CD-R and use it like a normal disk (the obvious caveat was that if you deleted or changed shit, you lost space, and it wasn't truly deleted/overwritten, just invisible to the file system, IIRC there's a tool that lets you access old versions of files on those discs) and then flash drives right after
carried like a gig of Zip disks wherever I went, and a USB Zip drive right before 128MB flash drives got cheap, especially since a lot of computers didn't have cd burners, so I couldn't just use my CD-R

I want a modern laptop in this design, with the screen taking more space on the flip panel
>>
Protip:

How to revive dead laptop/whatever battery for retards:
Step 1: Get battery/power supply of higher voltage
Step 2: Connect to battery for a few seconds
Step 3: Pop battery in device and charge as normal

Just did this to revive a nimh powerbook 520 battery with a 18v drill battery.

Are there any phone keyboard-cases out there that act as a proper hinge?

OS/8 isn't terrible, and I think you can run a VT-52 with later 8s

you can even hack USB onto an 8/a

Go for the 2000. It's got twice as much RAM, a better screen, and is thinner

breddy good, do anything fun with it?

I'd like to pick one up some day but I'm not sure if I want to take the time to learn alias software or other stuff to really make anything of use with it
At least I could use it as a bitchin' MIPS dev box.
>>
>>55387092
Not as much as I would like. You could almost still use it as daily driver, I would say the performance is about a Pentium4 (but 4 of them). It has 8GB of ram.

The biggest challenge is finding software, it took me a weeks to get the latest Irix.

I got mine off ebay for $500 + $200 shipping..worth it.

>>55387148
Not bad, considering they seem to go for $1k plus. Do you have a 4x1GHz or something like a 4x700? You could probably daily drive either, I think there are a lot of SGI guys dailying fuels and octanes still.

I had quite a lot of luck just searching for "IRIX" on btdigg, turned up a ton of stuff like Softimage and Maya, but it seems to be down lately, and I don't know of any alternatives, unfortunately. You can always try cozying up to Nekochan too (and they also have Nekoware for free software ports) and I think the internet archive also has some MIPSPro compilers at the very least here https://archive.org/details/cdromsoftware?and%5B%5D=SGI&sort=-publicdate&page=1

He wants it because it's the portable used in the movie Aliens and it's used on the space shuttle.

Going to guess that Russian computers are based on Western (non-Russian) ones with support for Cyrillic added on. So primary coding will be done in the English alphabet.
But fwiw, where applicable, the Cyrillic letters are placed above their English translations. What you see above G, D, Z, P, R, S are the Russian equivalents.

I very much intend to replace the stereo in my 89 Prelude one day with a minidisc player, and all of my discs will have synthwave albums on them. NOTHING is cooler than discs in a caddy

I have a later model of that thing, couldn't get it to work though. The power cord I bought with it was the wrong one, hopefully I didn't fry it.

You posted this before some weeks back and got me interested in getting one of these. I can definitely see myself using one of these on the go instead of my current laptop, although I've been staying off because of the hardware specs being rather minimal for what I usually do.

Does engineering count as tech? (Engineering includes fluid dynamics, valves, pipes, and suction pumps.)
