Is there a market for hard drives equipped with a small pouch (literally just enough to turn the platters to slag) of thermite and a self destruct tripwire that burns the drives if you enter the wrong startup code at the bios level?
Personally i really do have nothing to hide, my porn is embarrasing not illegal, but if there was a market worth exploiting I'd happily start selling kits or 'secure erase' drives...

No, because thermite is ineffective at destroying hard drives. Hard drive platters are actually unbelievably hard to destroy. They are chemically inert too, so acid/base is also an ineffective option.

That would basically be the same as just overwriting the hard drive normally. So yeah, pretty feasible it just takes a long time.
You could probably destroy all of the information at once if you had a magnet that was powerful enough, but very high power magnets are big, power hungry, hot and expensive.
It might be possible to fill the hard drive enclosure with some abrasive material while it is spinning to destroy the surface of the platters, but it would be really hard to control and probably also super expensive.
