Download Linux Live USB Creator (LiLi). Use it to make a Linux live USB with persistent storage. Then you can boot off the flash drive and it won't impact your main OS at all. If you mess something up, you can just make a new live USB.

Just go install Linux Mint. It will automatically configure your bootloader for you. At boot, you will have the option to choose between Linux and Windows.

Oh, but pay attention to the formatting options when you install. You need to have a partition just for Linux. If you only have one partition, you're kinda screwed because repartitioning a system drive in use is dicey.
