What is the best socket 7 motherboard?
I heard they are unstable, is that true?

I recently restored an old emachines with a k6-2 and installed xp on it for shits and giggles. Works surprisingly well and I haven't had any stability issues.

Emachines? Oh, wow. These things were cheap as fuck.

I got it from a friend to play with it. It was seemingly upgraded from a 333mhz cyrix to a k6-2. It has a 2gb hdd so I couldn't install any service packs. It is really weak but I may install debian on it just to see how it will handle it.

IDE harddrives shouldn't be hard to find out there.
Avoid PCChips boards, they have fake L2 cache. Also avoid SiS chipsets. Apart from that, I'd say get a board with an Intel chipset if you want to do a Pentium build. K6-2s work fine on Intel chipsets as long as the board can do 100MHz FSB, too.

It was time of Windows 98 and fishy drivers (while today you will install something NT and it will use its builtin drivers). Nowadays it might be rock stable.
Worst things were with AGP, iirc.

Use 120GB and smaller ones (check if the mobo doesn't have lower limit, like 32 GB).

Abso-fucking-lutely. What a complete shitstain of a manufacturer.

I'd go with Pentium 2, but they have locked multipliers.
