I need to burn a bootable Windows 10 USB. Every computer in my network is heavily infected. So I came over to a friend's house to use his laptop.
Just ran antiviruses and it found 3 trojans on his laptop. Can I proceed with burning Windows 10 images onto my USB nonetheless on this computer or can these trojans tamper with the process?

Doing a clean sweep (formating) for my computer, since I've been getting a lot of BSOD.

I'm thinking I'll disconnect my SSD, and run Killdisk to clean my HDD. Then remove my HDD, and install a clean windows 7 (and upgradte til windows 10 straight after) on my SSD.

Anything I should keep in mind before I do this?

what do you mean by this? What did you not like or what are you looking for? I usually just use normal ubuntu with unity as i dont have a problem with it, looks nice enough, and i usually set up keyboard shortcuts anyways. Just look up popular DEs (desktop environments) and give them a try.

I was trying to replace a power supply but I decided to go back to the original one, but when I went to reboot I forgot to plug in the power to my HDD. (Not my SSD which has my OS, the HDD is secondary for storage)

So I turned it off, unplugged and plugged in my HDD and my computer wouldn't boot at ALL. No lights, nothing. I unplugged it again, it crashed instantly. So when it rebooted I went into BIOS and selected the SSD, and it works fine now. But I'm afraid to plug my HDD back in, but I absolutely need it for work.

Anyone know what my problem is? (Besides being an idiot)

also back up your essential data, harddrives fail constantly, its what they do

I'm currently trying to download a torrent, but it keeps stopping every so often and giving me a "Missing files" error. What's more, my hard drive keeps making weird noises while downloading it.

When I re-check the torrent, it turns out the files are still there, so they aren't actually being lost or anything, which suggests to me that it could be the result of a bug or a poorly created torrent... but if that's the case, then what's with the noises my hard drive is making?

Other info:
- I am downloading two other torrents which have so far given me no errors.
- My hard drive is only ~6 months old.

Can you kill microsoft excels ability to auto correct numbers into dates?

I had just finished copying a bunch of tables into excel and then it decided to turn some columns into dates and I realized that I've never in my life have found that feature useful and I'm sick of manual fixing that all the time.

I tried it in my old PC as well and had the same problem. PC would boot fine without the hard drive, but when plugged in, was completely dead. If I have to pay for data recovery I will but I feel like this is a connection issue, as there were no signs of my hard drive dying as I could tell. No clicking sounds, no broken files, etc. I feel like it's a boot issue but I can't figure out what or why.

Babby's first gaymen PC builder here from last night
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/yxn9WX
TL;DR
>Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
>Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing
>MSI H81M-P33 Micro ATX LGA1150
>Kingston HyperX Fury8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
>Western Digital 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
>GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card
>XFX TS 550W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply

Everything external is being salvaged from older computers and such.
So, my stupid questions in no particular order:
>SSD vs HDD, which do I need and how much? What if I want to do some recording in the future (video+audio)?
>GTX 970, is it a meme? Should I substitute for an alternative
>Intel core I5 enough for moderate gayman or should I jump for an I7? What's the difference, both are quad-core?

dont jump on the 970 wait the few hours until the rx480 is going to be released and make your own decision,

strong points of the rx480 seem to be:
lower power consumption and vr-ready so I guess you can gaymen comfy on 1080p

ssd is definetly not a meme, but ssd size is dependant on your budget, but I wouldnt get more space than 512 gb just because ssd's are getting cheaper every year

as for cpu, go for whatever you want, if you want performance per core I'd go with the xeon 1231v3

rx480 release when? And what are the real differences? I saw some people blasting the 970 in place of the 380 last thread. I'm trying real hard not to break my $700-$750 budget and I don't need a 1080p 60fps machine as my monitor is gonna be a 720p 60Hz tv
>>
>>55305798

How can you have fans in 4 directions without obstructing some? Is the computer floating in the air?

>inb4 in the drawing you're seeing it from below

Then don't call it side intake, call it top intake. Also it's important how much air is displaced by every fan, which depends on the size and RPM.
>>
>>55305798
depends on cfm of the fans
if they're all identical, you're doing it wrong because you should go for positive pressure (more intake than exhaust) in the case, so dust isn't sucked in through the cracks

Yeah that's the same in microsoft excel, but not very helpful when you just want to copy paste 4 tables containing like 288 cells each into a page.
Then there are better manual solutions than typing ' 1152 times.

Might sound real fucking stupid but my 1080p/60hz monitor doesn't 'feel' 60hz

If I watch a game on YouTube at 1080/60 it seems to be a bit smoother than the actual game I'm playing which is running at 60fps, feels more like 50-55 if that makes sense

Any ideas?
>>
>>55306161

>>
>>55306193
Go for toshiba if you can.
>>
>>55306193

>>
>>55306249
It is mostly irrelevant.

If I wanted a manual solution I could've stayed with Microsoft Excel. Selected the cells in question, then chosen Text as format option for those cells, and pasted in the table I wanted unchanged.

I don't know you can select all the cells, and type ' once and input 1152 's in the cells though.
Not that it would matter or make things easier, but I'm curious how I can do that and then paste in tables over it and have the desired results.

My family just switched to Verizon from T-mobile. I need to unlock my dad's iPhone so he can use it on Verizon, T-mobile is taking forever to send us the unlock code. What's the easiest way to unlock an iPhone 6s for free? Google shows mostly paid results.
>>
>>55306565
Just wait for the unlock code. Normally if you just call the carrier (if you aren't on a contract/payment plan) they will give you the code for no charge (AT&T does this, not sure about T-Mobile). When you threw the Verizon SIM card into the phone, did it pull the carrier data or no?

Were you looking for the pasta?

I believe in security through isolation. Due to the current state of technology you cannot avoid using dangerous closed source software and habits. However It's upto you how seriously you are going to take your security.
Although Privacy and Security are correlated, are completely different priority. Sometimes you actually want your privacy to be breached to a certain extent to be secure from malicious attackers.
Here are my security advices:

Install GNU/Linux. Have MAC or RBAC enabled. Don't log in as a root.
Only install the softwares from your distro's secure repo
Use the Grsec kernel with PaX patches.
Use uBlock origin. HTTPS everywhere, Disconnect and Decentraleyes.
Use a Secure DNS.
Never keep yourself logged into anything.
If you want to compromise your privacy, enable two phase log in, However please do not link your email IDs as "referential IDs". Just make sure one email ID does not trace back to the other one you got.
Use a password manager. Best way is to maintain own encrypted spreadsheet.
Never use flash.
Install and keep firewall enabled at startup.
Keep bluetooth and printer service disabled by default.
Never give your windows VM any network access.
Do not bank or shop online unless you really have to. NEVER INSTALL YOUR BANK'S APP IN YOUR PHONE.
Randomly change all your 16 digit passwords. Use your spreadsheet to keep track of it.
Analyse your data traffic to check for network tapping.
Always keep a mirror backup of your data. Create your own cloud storage if you are really serious.
Lastly, only visit trusted websites

Reminder that there are malwares can exploit your host file system. Bidirectional file and clipboard sharing should be handled with caution.

>Protip:
You cannot "download" or "install" security

The only components that can be fucked up by magnets are hardrives and floppy drives. The magnets on the filter are to weak to mess with anything like that. Just avoid big strong magnets. Also I think a crt can be messed up with magnets, but again you need a strong one.
>>
>>55307822
depends, its likely you are doing download speeds in megabytes, however quoted speeds are in megabits, and 1 bit is 1/8th of a byte.
so if its 2 megabytes it will be 16 megabits of your 30 (unless you did the conversion and youve got a 240 Mb/s quoted speed)
so you're probably using over half
>>
>>55307857
Thank you! I appreciate it.
>>
>>55307822

If you are SURE it is 30MBps, then it is fine. Nearly no difference.

But many, many internet providers actually announce in Mbps (notice the non-capital b). A b is around an eight of a B.

So you have actually arround a total of 3.75 MBps, of which you are using 2.

1.75 should be enough for most cases of streaming though, but im not sure if it can handle 3 instances of streaming.

Carrier depends on where you live. Do some research on who has the best coverage in your area. As for what kind of phone to use dumb phones are strong and easy to use and iphones are a little harder to use but you can do more shit and android phones have the most funtionality but they are slightly harder as well. Dumb phones also have more battery. If you want something cheap get a dumb phone or a really cheap shitty android. Beware of cheap android phones because they can get bloated and become slow.

So you're losing access to the local network itself, but still have internet access basically? That sounds like OpenVPN when using redirect-gateway (forces all IP traffic through the VPN), but it doesn't seem to be enabled from your logs.

All I can say is to double check your IP configuration to make sure everything is correct and that you don't have any potential conflicts between thee local network and the bridged one from your home.

Why do companies even release stock versions of their graphics cards? Fucking nobody buys them since third-party versions are always far superior. The only advantage they provide is time (a few weeks after release, before third-party versions have been released yet) if you're incredibly inpatient and you've got money to blow. Why would they not just have third-party cards prepped for the release date instead?

just use bash and read the man pages / google it
grep, sort and diff are what you're looking for.
According your question you got two "files", or at least two entries.
use grep and sort and store it on a temporary file
use grep and sort on the second entry and store it on a second temp file
compare the two files using diff.
I don't know if that's the best way to do it, but it should works.

R is specifically designed for this kind of stuff, but I recommend C since it actually has other practical applications outside of weird ass analytical situations. The big problem here is Overwatch tries to obfuscate some of the information you want to protect against botters, so you'd need to devise a system that can analyze your screen. It won't be fun. If I were you I'd either give up or at least drop the stuff not directly related to inputs on your end.

No, I meant drop the stuff like what character you played, what abilities you used, when you died, etc. The things that are not keystrokes or an internet speedtest. I guess you could set a trigger to count how often you pressed the ability binds and make some extra inputs to denote changes in character and deaths, but that gets unwieldy fast. I would assume most multiplayer games employ such a system. Runescape doesn't, I know that much.

I have a PS4, the HDMI goes into my monitor, a 3.5mm runs from the audio out into my speakers, which I then plug my headphones into.
Is audio latency something I need to be concerned with, what with the source being run through two other devices before getting to my headphones? Or is it like, a couple of ms max sort of thing?

So I rebooted my PC to install updates. When the CMOS error came up I went into the BIOS just to see what my settings were. I noticed the smart fan option wasn't on so I turned it on. Saved and exited. Installed the updates. Computer rebooted and this time no CMOS error. Rebooted it 3 times and it didn't come up again. What? Why? What did I do?
>>
>>55311156

>>55311177
PSU is a sealed unit. You don't need to take it apart to learn how to put together a computer. You're free to do so -- they're kinda neat, but if you don't know anything about electronics you're not gonna know what you're looking at.

And that old prebuilt with all its ribbon cables is messier than a new ATX build is gonna be. They're actually pretty simple to put together. But you'll learn something by playing with the parts. It's good practice to see how all sorts of things are put together and come apart.
>>
>>55311331
Ah, good to know. I think the PSU was connected to the case just inside its box, which was the only reason I was trying to clear everything out and get a better look.

I know everything in that prebuilt is super outdated, but does that include the fan? Seems like the kind of thing that wouldn't go obsolete, unless older model fans are just ridiculously underpowered.

Alright, Windows 10 here (hold the memes). My custom PC starts up and operates completely fine with most of the Spyware and botnet garbage forcefully disabled.

How reliable is this bittorrent settings calculator?
http://infinite-source.de/az/az-calc.html

I've always used it but it doesn't appear to have been updated in years. For instance, it still calls itself the "Azureus [...] calculator" and links to the Azureus wiki (which is no longer online), even though Azureus changed its name to Vuze nearly a decade ago.

Is there some better, more modern guide which takes into account new developments in the bittorrent protocol, as well as advances in internet technology?

So I got an ultrachinkbook tablet pc. Long story short there is no operating system anymore and I cant seem to find an efi bootloader in any of the windows installation mediums.

The recovery media is on a chinese server that you have to have a chinese phone number ot access so that doesn't seem to be an option.

Ubuntu does not have drivers for this what I thought was very generic but apparently very specific hardware.

Am I just cucked and have to use external mouse/wifi/blutooth and fuck the touchscreen? I'd rather not. There must be a way to install this.

btw this is the thing

Sup /g/ help me pick a receiver.

Some details

I have a 2014 50' LG TV with a 2015 LG sound bar(2.1 channel, 320W). Connected to the tv is a PS4 and my laptop(I'm planning to add at least 2-3 more devices).

I mostly use my TV for gaming, and also listen to music through my sound bar. I would want a receiver that could do lagless passthrough since gaming is my main use for the TV. Audio quality is obviously important since I do like listening to music. On occasion I'll watch a movie but I do tv shows more than movies. I've been reading a lot that AV receivers focus mostly on sound for movies, it'd be nice to find something that makes everything (music/gaming/movies) sound nice.

Main point is that I want a receiver that can do HDMI passthrough so i don't get lag when I game.

Much appreciated

I installed Windows 10 on my SSD and want to move all my documents/movies/etc. folders over to the HDD.

I went in and changed the location and now they all look like pic related.

Trying to create a folder in D: called "documents" and moving it there results in an error message that says "the specified path is invalid". They all just redirect to the drive itself as opposed to specific folders.

Help would be appreciated.

Considering pic related. Either this, or a samsung 950 pro m.2. I've been told all the proper nvme ssds run hot though, so I'm leaning towards Intel because of this as their drives come with heatsinks. This drive would be used purely for loading with heavy programs and games.

Would I see a large difference in this ssd for load times vs just getting a 2TB Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" ssd? (The 2TB ssd is actually cheaper).

Hi /sqt/.

I salvaged an Early 2008 iMac recently. It boots to a white screen followed by a flashing folder with a question mark icon. I'm assuming the boot sector or OS is missing. I can't access recovery.

I am trying to burn Snow Leopard to a disk (figured i'd start with what was closer to its release) but can't find a decent way to do it on Windows.

I've tried converting multiple dmgs to iso and burning them with cdburnerXP, I tried making a boot usb (with El Capitan) with Transmac, and I can make a DL-DVD with transmac but I don't have any dual-layer drives.

Am I missing anything here? Should I just bite the bullet and get some DVD-DLs?
