When turn it on it powers up the drive and it spins constantly as far as I can remember.

Why would you need to use it for prolonged periods anyway? They're only really useful for data recovery or for cloning drives. If you need to have an extra drive connected to your computer constantly, just plug it into the motherboard like your other drives.

I have one and it has a physical power button. Heat is not a problem. What are you afraid of?

just make sure to leave it on for no less than 3 minutes on medium heat. you can use the time to get your butter/jam/marmalade ready.

not really, unless it's some high end 10,000 rpm drive that expects active cooling or something

hdd's work best when they're running pretty warm
