IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Why does the sticky say the edge series is one to avoid, all the specs on them seem okay, but maybe I'm missing something
>>
>>55263106
they're built of cardboard and wishful marketing
>>
>>55263106
As someone who has a somewhat early edge series, everything on it is cheap plastic. Nothing feels good on it except the Think clit. Yes, even the keyboard is trash. The only good thing about it is that it has an HDMI port, and they can be had cheap. I got mine for $30, solely for its HDMI.
>>

Series 3 Ultrabase if you want to carry the hard drive in it with you. Otherwise, any Series 3 Mini Dock or Advanced Mini Dock will do the trick if you like them done through USB ports and then you get to do multiple external monitors
But bear in mind that the limit is 2 active monitors at one time due to IGP limitations

Is the price for that x300 particularly good/bad? It's less than what it goes for on the the thinkpad guide for reference.

It just seems exceedingly high for what it is, unlesss you really want a typewriter.

I can't comment on market prices, but you could get better performance for your money, that's all. If you're going for aesthetics/godkeyboard then more power to you. State your use case if you want more opinions.

>>
>>55264608
Hmm, ok. This will mainly be a side laptop (have a MacBook I'll be using most of the time, or at least in plan). I'll be installing Void or Gentoo Linux on whatever Thinkpad I get. Budget is under $110. I have a preference for higher res screens more than anything else which is why I wanted a x200s earlier but I lost that bid. The form factor of the x300 is pretty appealing though since it looks pretty sleek.
>>
>>55264629
Sure, if he's gullible. There's noticeable video compression and some latency though.

It's sleek but you're paying thru the nose for "muh thin". You may be able to win an x201 or x200 at that budget and it will perform better.

I paid twice that for mine but it also came with a swank IBM bag in perfect condition, maxed out RAM, a genuine charger, and even the owner's manual and other papers, so that's about what I'd expect to pay for a more barebones model.

So I'm trying to put together a laptop out of the corpses left in the wake of my Frankenpad, and so far I've got my Nvidia board in the 4:3 Intel T61 with the T500 cooler I originally used in my T60. I have x220, bought it like a week ago. Since it has an intel network adapter i wanted to change to atheros and since it has a "whitelist" it doesn't allow me to boot the OS. I patched a modded bios (1.40) ofc everything works flawlessly and i noticed my Ethernet doesn't work. I tried reinstalling drivers, even booting live linux to check if its working. No luck. On W7 it even doesn't show Local Access Network. In bois ethernet port is enabled. So my modded bios fucked up my ethernet or is my ethernet port kill. >>
>>55268927
They're about $15 on eBay.
The original hinge that went into the X60 and X61 tablets wasn't beefy enough, and IBM made a much stronger version very late in the run and for warranty replacement.
The original has an 'E01' mark on it. The beefed up one is 'E02' or 'E02a'.
Don't buy the chinese copies. They're strong but have some play and are _always_ slightly crooked.
>>
I am between an x220 a t420 and a t520 for different reasons. All of them have an i5-2520m , 4gb ram , a 1366x768 display and a 320gb hard drive. I will fit whichever I buy with the best screen available and an mSata ssd.

i need something fast , small or both. So here is my dilemma.
I love the portability of the x220 but i will be left with a 2520m which i find to be quite mediocre.
So i was looking for the t420 which can be upgraded to an i7 quad core to make it fast as fuck but it will have temperature issues , according to what I read.
Then I saw the t520 which can officially support the quad core but it starts getting rather big.

I will mainly be using it for programming at school and diagnosing network and computer issues at work.
>>
>>55274002

Get the T520 and upgrade the screen to 1080p. Small Thinkpads suck, don't compromise.

>So i was looking for the t420 which can be upgraded to an i7 quad core to make it fast as fuck but it will have temperature issues , according to what I read.
Nothing but over heating issues, and you need the 90w power cord and it's still not enough.
>Then I saw the t520 which can officially support the quad core but it starts getting rather big.
If you want a quadcore and these are your options, this is your best shot.

I feel like carrying around a t520 with you everywhere would be a pain in the ass.

Idea here is that if you want to reinstall your system you can just wipe / and not lose your files. Desktop installation with bunch of stuff should take less than 15GB but you want to have plenty of extra space on / to grow into if needed.

>>55277717
Remove WWAN card, have a low power SSD, mute sound when not in use and dim the screen when not in use. If you're on Linux fuck around in powertop until you've enable all the powersave features that don't cripple your usability.

There might be panel options that use less power than the stock panel but I haven't looked into that.

I bought a x220 less than a month ago, I love it. Last week it started randomly shutting down and not turning back on for "a while". Now it just won't come on at all. Tried

With battery (charged)
With battery and AC adapter plugged in
Without battery with adapter plugged in

Expected: x220 to come on
Result: Nothing, absolute silence

Before random shutdowns, computer was not hot, fans did run and were not running when the x220 shut down.

Going to try to get the ebayer i bought it from to either give me a refund or should I have him get me another x220 if he has it? google says x220 has a "random shut down problem", so I don't know where to go from here.

I've been putting the final touches into my thesis, and this has forced me to used the latest version of MS Word, which I run on a VirtualBox. This causes my T430's CPU to run at 25% and around 70C°. The lottery for no-name Chinese batteries is worse. That Chinese battery is 90% likely to be using recycled used cells. The controller just gets reflashed to call them new and lie about the capacity.

"reviews good" == I plugged it in and it didn't catch on fire.

70C with turbo? That's normal.
But 70C at lower clock frequencies is dangerous, check the clocks with Open HW monitor. Also consider repasting.

I bought a chinese battery off Amazon a few years back. 9 cell for my x220t. No problems with it, wasn't equal to the lenovo battery but I got four hours of sold usage for maybe 8 months before Jamal took my laptop.

More than half the Chinese batteries I got off amazon and eBay didn't even work. Those that did deteriorated rapidly, or simply stopped working after a few weeks.

It's not an actual problem anywhere except on his toy distro. He's fixing something someone else has already fixed for him.
"But anon, he's dealing with a bug on his distro, don't we want people fixing bugs?" Sure. Where did he inform upstream? Oh, he didn't. So everyone else using Gentoo will still have to fix it for themselves too.
[Assuming it really was a real bug and not pilot error. Given the vague description of the problem and fix, that's what I'm actually betting on.]
>>
>>55279838
It was almost certainly a user error in configuring the kernel, which is to be expected the first few times you try for yourself.
There's nothing wrong with using Gentoo, it's extremely stable and easy to tune once you get over the leaning curve.

They have a few benefits like being extremely easy to disassemble and some great screens on high-end models. However, I think the keyboards are worse and HP have infamously bad thermal designs.

Don't worry so much, C2D will be usable for a long time yet. Personal computational power has stagnated.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-DDR3-SODIMM-Memory-Module/dp/B007B5S52C

Crucial has three different part numbers for this kit: CT2946704, CT2KIT102464BF160B, CT2K8G3S160BM

Is there way to make my T420s fan not scream all the time, the thing speeds up to 3600rpm when on AC and is audible even when cpu runs pretty cool. If I put this thing under heavy load where temps go to 80-90c it takes it just fine and the fan runs at 4000 rpm. The problem is that the fan does not want to slow down even when the temps drop back to 40-50c, it's just stuck on 4000rpm.

Is it just how this thing is or what, it feels like when it gets to higher speed it will be stuck there, it wont slow down except if I shutdown and restart

I also have cleaned this machine about half year ago and repasted, shouldn't be a problem

Hey guys, I need some help.

I bought two T420 thinkpads for myself and my dad a while ago. Mine turned out great and I've had an absolute blast with it, but my dad's, despite having the same specs, is quite busted. We're both running the same distro (Debian), but for some strange reason mine is really fast (I can run GNOME no problem with no stutters and do work) while his stutters up sometimes even when running LXDE, the lightest DE around. And when I check his processes his RAM and CPU are barely being used. What gives? Could it be a faulty HDD or what? How can I diagnose his T420 's comparative shittiness with mine, if mine is seemingly excellent while having (presumably) the same specs?

Obviously the first thing you should do is try putting in a different hard drive and see if the problems continue. It's a thinkpad so that should take you about 10 minutes. Just put in your laptop's hard drive if you don't have a spare hanging around.

So about to pull the trigger on the T460P for those quad core (since I can't really get second hand thinkpads in my country).

I'm getting the T460p as well. Here's some things you should definitely know.

Get the 72Whr battery option. Always. The 48Whr one sticks out the same amount, I have no idea why Lenovo would sell it as an option besides to fool some people for a higher profit.

Temperature shouldn't concern you unless you plan on running this thing on prime95 or something like it 24/7. TPFan will be your friend, set a steeper fan curve than the factory setting have and you should be fine. That's a good idea getting the 940MX for the dual heatpipes, will probably help a bit more with temp control.

Other things to note. Unfortunately, Lenovo cheaped out on the monitor casing, it's generic plastic instead of carbon fiber mixture like the T460s has or fiberglass mixture like the T460 and T560 have. Pretty disappointing there, but other than slightly increased thickness, you should be fine as long as you don't torture the damn thing.

If you want a bit more battery life and no potential scaling issues, get the 1080P (FHD) display. If you want more space/ actual good colors for photo or video editing/ bright enough to use in indirect sunlight, get the 1440p (WQHD) screen. I'm going for the 1440p screen myself, since I'm okay getting 6 instead of 7 hours of battery life if it means I can read the damn thing outside.

That's because 60 year old college professors use the latest windows/MS Office suite. Also, you'll get the boot if you think they're going to go through the trouble of installing new shit, learning to modify PDF's AND struggling to read and correct your work.

So I'm holding back on the X1 or T460s just for the reason of no removable batteries. How easy is it to acquire genuine batteries to replace them yourself?

On a Side note is it possible to replace the screen of the X250 or X260 with a 2K screen

X1 is an ultrabook and X-Series is thin enough if you prefer having removable battery, upgradeable memory, various ports for peripherals, PCIe-mini ports and room for personal maintenance.

>out of date hardware
Laptop CPU performance hasn't improved dramatically in years. GPU has but it has limited uses outside gaming. Power saving has improved but after 4-6 hours its only nice to have imho. Refurbished ThinkPads aren't for everything but for some tasks they offer great value.

The most important things for me though are great value for money and low total cost of ownership while still having great quality and mobility. I don't really have to care if I break or lose this thing since a new refurbished one is not going to break my finances.

Some like to hobby around with inexpensive high quality laptops and rice them to the max although that's not for me personally.

XFCE is my default choice, mainly because it runs well on potato tier hardware, if no one else provides a good answer it's probably what I'll go for
>>
I need a laptop for university.

How much battery time does a thinkpad have when I do things like websurfing, programming, etc?
>>
>>55299562
Even if I had the latest, fastest machine I'd go with XFCE. Gnome3 and KDE look too bloated with all that eye-candy. LXDE, Cinnamon and MATE look unfinished and buggy.

I used Enlightenment for a bit years ago (i think e17) and kinda liked it. But also seemed unfinished and buggy.
>>
How do you clean finger marks from the top of your thinkpad? My T420 shows a lot of finger marks at certain angles and I don't like it.

Might just cover it all up with stickers.
>>
So, I resigned to switching the GPUs of the T520's Optimus setup on BIOS level to avoid Bumblebee/PRIME/driver headaches.
Unfortunately, when selecting "Discrete GPU", I get a blank screen after selecting the OS to boot in GRUB.
Other symptoms are the device being under intense strain (fan runs at maximum rpm, device gets hot) and no drive access by the system at all (judging from the respective LED).
I've already disabled the GRUB frame buffer, as apparently that fixed it for another person.
Did anybody run into the same issue?

Man my x220 battery lasts so much longer than any other laptop I've had before. Been working around the building on it all day and still don't need to charge it.
>>
>>55303459
Not really, the slice battery for my X230T died yesterday and I have no idea why. 80% of stock capacity, almost 2 years old, discharged itself to death without recharging while plugged. Current is still passing through the connector to the primary battery, but the charging circuit of the slice is apparently bricked. Can I do something to salvage it?
>>
>>55304619
Are you sure it's the charging circuit on the battery, and not the laptop that's fucked ?
I'd try charging it with one of those standalone battery chargers.

I'm not sure, but one thing is sure: a slice battery should charge out of the laptop (it has its own charging port). And it doesn't anymore in my case.
>>
>>55304946

I'm pretty sure that means the maximum possible with your graphics drivers. The resolutions displayed are the ones your screen's completely compatible with. Going lower shouldn't present any problems but going higher shouldn't work and if it's a crap monitor might break it but that usually doesn't happen.
