Youtube videos aren't nearly the same load as high bitrate HEVC, even a Q6600 plays 4k Youtube videos fine. UHD/60fps HEVC pushes the 6600k to at least around 50% CPU usage with current decoders so you'd need a pretty serious dual CPU setup for 8K.

2k~4k smartphones are useful for affordable VR. Retina is measured by the distance from the display your eyes are going to be (on average) and your eyes are much closer than the 9 inches they use for the iPhone when you are strapping the phone to your head.
