My HTPC has a dedicated GPU for 1080p and 4k playback.

The CPU could probably manage to do 1080p by itself, but 4k is a stuttery mess without a GTX 960 (dat sweet sweet hardware decoding)

Another fellow japan bro here. The fax machine is used every day at my school. My desk is near it so I hear it dialing in and out. I have to fax my monthly work report through as well.

While the usage may have declined I am pretty sure deployment hasn't really. There's still plenty of them around.

o-o-okay? You realize that has hardware accelerated VP9 and HEVC Main 10 decoding right?

That means the CPU isn't doing much of anything it's using the iGPU, which is much more suited for video decoding.

Anything older than skylake however would not have the ability and would rely on the CPU.

>>
>>55253724
The GPU cores don't actually do the video decoding, there's just a video decoding/encoding ASIC onboard.
>>
>>55253904
Definitely. I laughed my ass off when I found out phones were getting 4k, what a fucking waste. Anything over 1280x720 is just overkill.
>>
Less than 8GB of ram.
>>
>>55253943
From what I understand it uses the HD 520 iGPU for video decoding and encoding.

it's the same iGPU used in the desktop chips as well so for a rundown on that just go to the anandtech review for skylake

http://www.anandtech.com/show/9483/intel-skylake-review-6700k-6600k-ddr4-ddr3-ipc-6th-generation/4
No mention of ASICs in there, seems like something they'd mention.
>>
>>55253947
Having used a 720p phone in 2012, I have to say going to 1440p was pretty significant, I imagine 2160p would be even more drastic.

Stop believing the marketing. Your eyes can see the difference, higher res just makes things smoother and clearer looking, while also adding more screen realestate for apps and shit.

>>
>>55254079

Sure, it probably isn't as important as getting higher res monitors on your laptop or PC, but fuck dont pretend it doesn't do ANYTHING because then you look like a raging faggot idiot.
>>
>>55254132
it can, most newer i5's probably can too if they are doing not much else and are clocked over 4.4GHz.

My 5820k hits 30-65% CPU usage while playing 8k youtube videos.
>>
>>55254138
And it's a goddamned phone. Why would you reduce battery life and increase cost just so it looks prettier? Are you one of those people that lives to use their phone? It's ridiculous. I mean yes, a higher resolution makes it look better, but there's a certain point where it's good enough. We hit that point years ago.
>>
>>55254161
Youtube videos aren't nearly the same load as high bitrate HEVC, even a Q6600 plays 4k Youtube videos fine. UHD/60fps HEVC pushes the 6600k to at least around 50% CPU usage with current decoders so you'd need a pretty serious dual CPU setup for 8K.
>>
>>55254161
Playing 8K and outputting 8K are two different beasts. While I appreciate the original point, it's kinda cheating if you're driving it only to be downscaled. That's not so much a challenge.
>>
>>55254188
>We hit that point years ago.
fuck that, i'm 100% serious when I say I want at least an 8k or 16k phone, why the fuck should I settle for your shitty jaggy garbage because YOU find it good enough? fuck yourself. We need to push forward battery tech anyway, lets give them a reason to put more money into R&D.

>>

i'm talking about 720p and 1440p. He said earlier 720p was already the point where going further makes no difference.

Going from 720p to 1440p is obvious as fuck, if you think going to 16k wouldnt be even more obvious I dont know how else to explain it to you.
>>
>>55254401
>i dont really see how that has anything to do with belief
You believe you see a difference and so you do. The retina displays were built around the visual acuity of someone with 20/20 vision. If you have better vision than that, good for you, but 1440p displays won't be noticeable for people with even better vision. It's an annoying meme that needs to stop.
>>
>>55254492
lol wut?

If you seriously think a display can't look more sharp than a retina display to someone with 20/20 vision you're a literal icuck... You drank the koolaid
>>
>>55254440
I agree that 720p to 1440p is obvious but going beyond 2160p in a phone form factor is going to completely useless for anything but VR. You'd be getting into serious diminishing returns in perceived sharpness at that point.
>>
>>55254522
Well I see phone screen tech and VR screen tech as going hand in hand, soooo yea.. that's the goal.
