Is using an old computer as a NAS a meme?
>>
Only if it's a Pentium 4.
>>
I use a netbook as my anime server.

It's fine so long as it's not a wasteful netburst CPU like a P4.

I hate those fucking cases, nothing on them is standard and everything breaks way too easily because the build quality is shit.
>>
>>55244901
What if you need a space heater?

Then it is near 100% efficient.
>>
>>55244831
Not if it have a decent network card, reasonable storage and and somehow quiet.
>>
>old i3-550
>shitty gigabyte board
>try to install freenas
>won't boot off USB, just hangs at POST
>slap in an old laptop drive, finally get it booted
>toss in 3x 3TB drives
>75W idle, 110W when copying
>70W if I let the drives spin down
why fucking bother
>>
>>55245084
tried to underclock?
>>
>>55245150
should be running speedstep to clock down already, could try to push it lower but doubt it's gonna help that much. Crappy board, crappy CPU.
>>
>>55244831
Is asking about memes a meme?
>>
>sell old computer for dirt cheap
>save money
>buy a real NAS
Totally worth it.
>>
>>55245303
Could also be a shit PSU.
>>
>>55244831
yes because it will be inefficient as fuck
>>
>>55244831
No, because you don't need a lot of CPU power to operate a server. Check out what companies like Synology do with completely underpowered ARM processors.

Anyways, the bad part about something like that is that the power draw. Overall I'm with >>55245650
But what you're doing will work for now.

>netburst
>>
>>55245084
>why fucking bother
because

> getting all the files on any device in the lan
> being freenas you can make zfs pools with snapshotting

You should get a nas, but maybe with better insides.
>>
Depends on what exactly you use. Old crap has relatively high power consumption.

Use a low end laptop from the last 3-5 years, get rid of the optical drive, buy sata extension cords and you can slap 2-3 3.5" drives "in" that shit depending on what you started with.

Pros:
Cheap af
Low power consumption
Built-in ups

Cons:
Probably only software RAID at best
Laptops are crappy to fix compared to towers

>>55245035
I use my 1055T ZFS nas as a space heater.
Works perfect.
