fullscreen/exclusive mode it directly controls the screen output.

Probably forgot to mention that I'm already using a 250GB SSD for the OS and key applications. Just limiting how many stuff I put on it after finding out that you can only write to them a certain number of times. So if not WD Black, go with Blue? Don't exactly have the money for a 1TB SSD.

In any case, do 2TB drives use a single platter (thus reducing the odds of failure) now?

Is it worth overclocking for gaming?

I have a 4690k with a NH-D15 cooler (bought mainly for silence and temps)

Stock clocks are 3.5GHz (temps 28-32) and voltage is on auto (tried it on 4.8GHz for a few minutes and voltage went to around 1.35vish

What are the best settings to use voltage wise? What reasonable overclock could I get on this and is it even worth it for gaming?
>>
>>55240987
sorry, I ment instead of getting a fast HDD you should get an SSD.

but you're looking for storage, so look at the green ones, you don't need fast disks for saving files. if blues are cheaper then go for them. the extra cash for blacks isn't worth it.

you do want to have a backup for everything you want anyway, hardware failure can always happen even for the most reliable drives.

what's your current setup?
post screenshots of your routers port forwarding settings and any other detail, your local ip addresses, ports, etc.

are you sure you aren't behind a second ISP NAT? you can't port forward these.
your ISP could also just blocking all ports but the necessary ones.
you might want to give them a call and ask.

How can I do a clean install of Windows 7 or even 10 if I have to, and keep a copy to redo a clean install later?

I plan to mess with the hard drive and boot systems and I want to try and keep this free windows copy that came with my new computer. Also trying to do this legitimately, I know enough shady dudes who could get me "free" windows if that was all I wanted, but I want a copy I can call my own without the guilt.

>>you do want to have a backup for everything you want anyway, hardware failure can always happen even for the most reliable drives.
My thoughts exactly. So far the WD portable drives haven't failed me but they're all nearly full as it is from backing up stuff from my laptop (which predates my first build). Noticed the prices for those went down a bit recently so I might invest in another in the future. At least for the files that would at the very least be a pain in the ass to replace.

For money's sake, I'll look to another 1TB internal drive. Might have to split things between "Anime/Hentai/JAVs" and "everything else". Or I could try to stop hoarding stuff. Had no idea the Danbooru Downloader folder reached 277GB in just a week.

If you can wait 5 months (max), Zen (AMD's new architecture for processors) will be out by the end of the year and could be a better value than Intel with good enough performance and fixes all AMD's past CPU issues (poor single core performance, much higher power consumption/heat output compared to Intel, etc etc). And if Zen doesn't live up to the hype, Intel's new Kaby Lake chips are supposed to be out by the end of the year as well, so you could get that or a Skylake chip for cheaper.

Baffling foam is like no money but if you insist on saving $5 then just cut them into a zigzag pattern and arrange them like this. They don't have to be anything close to perfect.

The only thing you need to know is that walls are flat so they bounce sound back and create an echo on microphones. You want something not flat.

proper audio treatment foam is cut at really steep angles, the point is that the incoming sound bounces off one side of a spike, hits the other spike, and keeps bouncing deeper into the wedge without ever reflecting back out.

It wouldn't be fun to cut them all properly but def not impossible. I'd rig up a hot wire, makes cutting foam way easier

Like another anon said it doesn't have to be perfect, but if you want it to work anything at all like acoustic treatment foam than the angles have to be cut really steep.

Assuming you're spending $500 on all the PC components besides the video card, the RX 480 would put the total at $730 (why buy the 4gb after so much bullying Nvidiots for the 3.5 meme like games use that much memory?), and the 1070 would put the total at $930 (assuming $430 for a non reference design, using this as the example card, which is somehow in stock as of posting this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127951&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-Veeralava%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=6202798&SID=NIS_926 ). So yeah $850 sounds reasonable, because you can skimp on some parts to get a 1070 build to $850 and buy some more premium parts that won't be bottlenecked by the 480 for $850.

after the hash is a comment, so ignored
::1 is the equivalent of 127.0.0.1 rendered in ipv6, so it's the ipv6 equivalent of:

127.0.0.1 localhost

I suppose I should add that 127.0.0.1 is the loopback address, which is (for reasons which are as yet unclear to me) the way a machine communicates to itself using the IP protocol suite. Setting the value of localhost is a way to name your local machine should /etc/hostname or whatever not work

Hey /sqtt/, I'm reposting this here from the /fglt/ in the hopes of getting an answer to my problem.

I have a couple of TrueCrypt encrypted volumes, that I would normally access to using the following command alone:

$ sudo cryptsetup --type=tcrypt --tcrypt-hidden open /path/to/container container-name

But after entering the passphrase for the hidden volume I get the following error:

Device /dev/loop0 is too small.

HOWEVER, I figured this only happens to my 4.3gb volume, I've tried it with a smaller volume (2,1gb ) and it still works perfectly. So I tried it again on the bigger volume but this time with the --debug option, after entering the passphrase I get the following output:

>(had to paste it here, since it's too long for a 4chan comment)

So right now I'm lost, not knowing what to do, I've tried plenty of other commands but none have worked so far. If I may add, I've tried on both 1.6.6 and 1.7.0 versions of cryptsetup, on Debian and Xubuntu, both with 4.4.0 version of the Linux kernel.

Would seriously appreciate whatever help you can offer. Thanks in advance.

>Could a long (25 feet) 3.5mm to RCA cable be the cause of a hissing sound on my stereo?

yes, that is an extremely long cable for that kind of connection

I would suggest trying to get digital spdif from whatever your music source is (optical or coaxial) along with a cable, and then buying a like $15 dac to put right next to the stereo. then a 1 foot 3.5mm/rca cable will do. Probably cost about 30 burger dollars if you care enough to make it sound nice but it should get rid of a bunch of distortion.

a cheaper option is to look for a source of interference. I had a dimmer switch line going by an audio cable, and turning the switch off made the distortion disappear. space heaters, other power lines, try moving stuff.

Stick with 1080p unless you hate the monitor and can afford a new one.

Not sure what you mean by a monitor "not keeping up" though.

What's your priority? quality graphics or max fps? Your decisions should be pretty clear if you know the answer to that.

>>
>>55244211
I just didn't know if frames have to be near the refresh rate for it to look nice and not tear. Not real clear on how it all works. Priority would be smoothness, I figured I could enjoy the quality graphics for a while, but when games push my PC harder, I could drop graphics to keep frame rates up. Haven't found a clear resource to fully explain how all of these things tie in together, as in monitor hz, and fps

I'm not very computer literate so if I come off as stupid I apologize beforehand. I have a computer monitor that I have connected to my laptop through HDMI unfortunately I now have two devices I want connected to my monitor but unfortunately I only have 1 HDMI port. I figured it's better getting another cable then buying a splitter because I was worried about latency issues with excess connections. So I bought a HDMI to displayport cable but unfortunately it didn't work. I did some quick googling and I found out they weren't too compatible so I bought a HDMI to DVI-D (dual link) cable and I still can't get my monitor to recognize my laptop.

Not sure what to do here. Is my fears of latency issues unfounded or is there a fix with the dvi/displayport cables I'm missing?

Basically, you're not going to notice the difference too much unless you're coming from a Pentium or old i3 or something. If you had say the 980, then you would absolutely want the best CPU possible. Otherwise it will not matter much for games.

If you're just trying to upgrade for better gaming performance on the r7 360, you should just get an i5. If you're getting the i7 with the intent of getting a better graphics card later, go for it. Otherwise it would be a waste

My question is;
The M.2 drive is described as 2280 D3, stress on the D3 aspect, being double sided and .15mm taller (or butt-fatter?) than D2 specifies.
If I get a case that supports 2280 D2, would it still fit or does that D2/D3 matter only for laptop motherboards and component clearances?

>same as the acer i have now
>gpu is a radeon hd5450
>buy a cheap dvi-i adapter to use both monitors
>doesnt work
>figured id ask here in the appropriate thread about which type of dvi adapter to get

And yes, I'm aware of the hate I'll get for what specs I've provided. But the pc was a $500 off-the-shelf system that I gave a cheap $60 upgrade a long time ago. So it's far from being a beefy gaming machine. I bought this PC in maybe 2008 or so. And was given the upgrade a couple years later in order to play less graphically intense games like Minecraft and Sims 3. Which it wasn't able to do before. But it was enough for me to be happy with it.

Anyway. I figured keeping the monitor would be nice though for watching movies or something while I browse online or draw on my Wacom. And I have gotten dual screen to work before via HDMI when the computer used to be in the living room. It was so my roommates could watch a movie while I did whatever on my own screen. But it's since been moved into my room and the HDMI setup's been replaced with a media server accessed by my roommate's PS3 in the living room.

So inb4 "get an upgrade faggit!" I can't afford a $1500 powerhouse. Just looking to spend maybe $15 at the most on an adapter for a monitor I got for free. I'm a massive poorfag so any bitching isn't going to accomplish anything.

One more thing to mention. I have no more room for anything that uses active conversion. No free outlets in the wall or power strip. So an HDMI adapter is out of the question here. Sorry. (Plus those are far out of the range of my budget here.)

You wrote like 5 paragraphs and I still don't see the only relevant information which is what kind of connectors the monitors have and what kind of connections the GPU has.
>>
>>55245383
probably the same thing but like, spend a few more dollars. seems like you know what you need. It's also sold as a cable rather than those adapters that just sit outside your video card.

It depends on how the hardware works, and interacts with the driver. Depending how obscure your hardware is, if it's amazingly cheap, or if it's got shitty drivers, any sort of problem can occur.

But it's 100% safe to fucking try it, so stop being a pussy.

>as stated in the post in the first lines of greentext
>the gpu has 3 of the standard ports of hdmi, dvi, and vga
>not hard to look it up either if that's too hard for you

>>55245434
The cables are attached to the monitors. There's no removing them on that end. My question is more of should I get dvi-d or dvi-a? Because I'd like to avoid spending money on something again only for it to not be compatible. The gpu's port has pin holes for any type really. Which was why I thought dvi-i would work since vga is an analog signal by itself. But I was wrong and the 2nd monitor isn't detected.

I did try switching it with my acer to make sure it wasn't the monitor itself too. But both work just fine on their own through vga. It's getting them to work together that's tricky.

Do you need 8GB of VRAM for 1080p 60fps gaming? I read an (((article))) showing that games never go above 4GB unless it's some shit optimized game on Ultra with 32X AA.

I'm asking because I don't want to try and "future proof" with a 8GB 480 when the 4GB model does the same thing but cheaper.

Get an HDMI switch box. Plug the monitor into the switch then the switch into the two devices. That way you just push a button for whatever device you want to use.

Formatting and "zero"ing are different things.
Formatting just tells the HDD there's nothing important there, so write over anything without looking.
Zero'ing actively fills all the chunks with 0's. Take a long time.

I wanted to expand my windows 7 partition by shrinking my /home partition and allocating the new space to windows through ubuntu. Between my /home and windows partitions were the efi partition and the reserved one, respectively. So I shrinked the /home folder, allocated it to the efi, shrinked the efi such that the new space would be next to the reserved, and then deleted the reserved partition so the new space would be next to the windows partition and finally got to expand it. The only thing is, I now hang at "starting windows" and startup repair hasn't fixed it. What do?
>>
>>55246091
For a clean install you just use the Windows 7 iso with your version and install it.
The installation medium doesn't have to be tied to your key or something, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to install Win7 so many times.
If you really want to use your key you can try this, Step 3:

>Also trying to do this legitimately
If you read my 0bin and read up on how the cracks work, you can be sure that you don't need your license. Call it shady or whatever but it's just stupid to worry about the license because it's so easy to get Windows activated.
>>
>>55246091
Just to be clear: If the dvds are in any way different than the .iso files (which I doubt) just download the .isos, it's piss easy.

How do I even upgrade from a 2500K? Mine has been running flawlessly at 4.2 GHz for like 5 years now, and so far I really haven't run into any bottlenecks with it. I do sort of want a new motherboard though with PCI-e 3.0 and a bunch of USB 3.0 ports and all that sort of stuff. I've also been shuffling around some big image files in Photoshop and Lightroom so I would like to get 16GB or even more RAM and I guess I may as well get some DDR4 while I'm at it.

Should I upgrade or would it not even be worth it? Should I just throw in a bit more DDR3 RAM to what I already have and call it a day?

I am trying to create a hangman game for practice and I cant remember how to use my counter variable ( int i ) in my for loop to effect my labels.

For example, I have 7 empty label boxes (The maximum number of letters in the words which are randomly chosen). I want my for loop to check the length of the string which is chosen and for every letter less than the max make a label box not visible.

So If it picks the turtle which is 5 letters I want it to make 2 labels not visible.

How do I make the counter count as the last string value for the name of my label.
They are named wordLabel[number 1-7] and I want the for loop to

            for (int i = 7; i > wordToGuessNumCount; i--)
{
wordLabel[i].Visible = false;
}

I know it is an entry level question but I cannot remember for the life of me.

not all network-connected devices are hosts, only ones that host some kind of service
for example, a network-attached terminal is only a client, as they (typically) don't host anything, only connect to hosts

you see the term in client applications, as that's what clients connect to; hosts

I've got my 2500K sitting in HTPC duty, bought a 3770k to accompany my then-Z77X-UP7 that shit the bed (Sent back to gigabyte with 5 weeks warranty when it hit their doors, they deemed it working perfectly -1 days warranty and made me pay for the return).
Got a maximus V formula now, can't see my 2770k bottlenecking anything badly with a 980Ti strix.

Just look for a cheapish new Mobo that supports what you want.

Should I disable super fetch and prefetch on windows 7 if I have an SSD? Will this cause a performance hit? Googling give me contradictory answers.

Also, should I disable intel speedstep if I don't care about electricity use (power is included in my rent)?
>>
>>55247557
Install an ssd.
>>
>>55247557
Install process explorer, check out all the items running. You can try defragging your disk as well although most systems now-a-days auto do that.

>>55247962
Super-fetch is essentially storing into cache the programs you run. All this does is makes sure that the memory is there to start-up any applications you might close and open often. You can turn it off, particularly since an SSD reads very fast anyways.
