Watched someone who "knows computers, stop questions me and leave me the fuck alone" pull on a tower CPU cooler as hard as he could to take it off. Didn't undo the retention lever (AMD) or anything. Just pulled and pulled until the lever that keeps the CPU in the socket let go and he broke the mounting hardware clean off the board. The CPU was stuck to the bottom of the cooler.

>what? Whats the problem? I always take it off like this.

He had the audacity to complain that the fins of the cooler always cut his hands and the parts companies should "design the release mechanism better"

Pic unrelated. Just gives me a giggle.

He pulled so hard he broke the lever that locks the socket so it "unlocked" the cpu from its socket. Thermal paste made a make shift glue and the cpu stuck.

As for motherboard replacement, it turns out this was his first tims doing this for THIS pc. He performed the same steps on his last 2 PCs and broke them the same way. It's "the manufacturers fault for not making stuff that lasts".

Which is why he buys a new PC every 6 months.

Does the dev team behind WinME count? That OS fried my motherboard and bricked two HDDs during defrag.

It was my first OS on a "real proper" computer, previously having an Atari ST for $15 and a Win 3.1 amalgamation I got for $50. I thought all computers were going to be shit after WinME, almost stopped using them, but then I installed WinXP and all my problems vanished. It was such an amazing breath of fresh air.

If the mobo heated so much that something burned out then dust it off once every few months.

And if your hard drives (plural) died from a defrag, ditch those 90's 40gig drives next time.

You don't leave yours 70's vette in the garage with the same gas in the tank for the last 15 years it has sat and drive it down the road like you went to the strip...

nah dude these people are not learning to type. they're adults who have had decades to learn to type. They've consciously chosen to ignore the proper way, and instead hunt and peck the slow way with two fingers. they will hunt and peck for keys a 5-10% normal speed for the rest of their lives without ever having any intention of improving. They will ignore the fact that they're actually being paid to work and if their job involves typing all day long than they are literally performing at 10% what is expected of them

I enjoy saying that to them because its condescending, but its also quite true. not being able to type, in a workplace where everybody does their work on a computer, is like not being able to read or write. Anybody who can touch type would cringe while watching these fucking try to input even the most simple things
>>
>>55233194
I work in a call center, so typed out notation is a huge part of my job, second only to the knowledge of what I actually need to help the individual with. I understand where you are coming from when it comes to looking at someone peck typing when they've been working on a computer for several years and have obviously not improved at all. That being said, you're still a dick.
Instead of being condescending (or at least only condescending) have you considered actually helping them at all? Showing them the proper home keys, helping with what fingers should go for what keys, anything?

witnessed a lot of stupid shit but the worst was at a shitty business I regrettably worked at, it's worse because this guy was a "lead technology expert" and had been doing this for 15+ years

tl;dr:
>client's "ROUTERBOARD" router dies, he won't take replacement router
>he spends over 7 hours trying to connect a modem to a switch
>show up with replacement and it works instantly
>ask what he's been doing
>just been hooking up modem to different port in switch for over 7 hours then going to look which PC randomly gets the public IP then repeating "I've never seen an IP address like this before" (doesn't know what a public IP is)
>ask why there is one different port away from the others that is colored differently
>"it's just for aesthetics"
>lel (just kidding I nearly killed myself on the spot)
>keeps repeating "managed switch" and won't say the word "router"
>turns off DHCP when I wasn't looking because "it is messing up their network"
dude was a macfag and legit thought that the shinier a router (managed switch? kek) was that meant the better it was, he "recommended" cisco meraki "gear" to residences with less than 3 PCs
>>
>>55233194
The worst is when they've gotten pretty good at hunting and pecking, maybe they get up to 25 wpm, not bad for two fingers.

>>55230013
They get all smug and will tell you that they're faster with two fingers than they are with all ten so they're going to keep doing it that way forever. The real problem you're going to have is when they are using the PC or internet access "failure" as a psuedo-excuse to get out of work that day. Easily done if they are working at a branch where their boss is 100+ miles away. Had a lady one time that decided she didn't want to do any work that day and would not, under any circumstances, power cycle her modem.

>super happy tone: We can't get online today
>okay you need to power cycle your modem before we call the ISP
>what's a modem? I'm not looking for that
>It's a black box with the word ARRIS on it
>Well I don't see it
>it's going to be in a closet
>I don't see it in the closet, wait now I do
>Okay you need to take the power cord out
>I don't see the modem now
So you could see the modem before, but now you can't.

>there's three cords! this is too complicated, I'm not doing this.
>So now you CAN see the modem? it's the only cord with two prongs
>TOO COMPLICATED
>Fine! Take them all out it's fine as long as you put them back in
>really, really long pause
>"I can't find the modem"
Look I don't give a flying fuck about you or your shitty business, worst fear is a week later the business owner will freak out at the retarded bill they're gonna get since this fuck wasted our time and we have to call the ISP to come out just to power cycle it and they'll charge too. Call up the owner in advance to report this and it's

Half of them tell me they can't type because they're older, that younger generations like mine are all good typists because we're "born into it". as if thats a legitimate excuse. Its like "bitch you were using a keyboard to type at work when I was still struggling to hold my head up, you had a huge fucking head start". They were typing before I even knew any words, yet somehow they never managed to figure it out.

Shit it only takes like 6 weeks to learn to type properly anyways.

Lol I work with a guy that types like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5irndpzO8I

we sit right next to each other and type out long reports all day long, my keyboard churns out a healthy 90-100wpm on average while this guy just punches one key at a time with one hand and a pencil eraser. All day I watch his other hand, quivering as if its about to reach for a key to help his first hand out, but he never actually does.

The worst part is the guys pencil eraser rubs all the letter off the keys and he swaps (blatent office theft) his scrubbed off keyboard with some other unsuspecting employee like every week. Every month they're replacing these "heavily worn out keyboards" when they are in fact in near mint condition, they just have no letters showing anymore.

I turn in about 15-20 times the amount of work he does everyday but for some reason all the bosses like him and point out how great his other qualities are, like picking up litter in the parking lot or refilling the coffee machine water supply

its honestly quite irritating

The entire idea of "fullscreen apps" taking up their own workstation is great. But not being able to leave that workstation without an animation that shows that I am, in fact, leaving this full screen application to go to another workspace is stupid. The response time for switching workstations was very low. If I were to click a link in workstation A, and my browser is in workstation C, it moves it to B. Because fuck you. The entire filesystem felt like the bastard child of Windows and Linux. Pick one. I autohide my dock, because I don't need that shit in my way all the time. It was very finicky when it decided to pop up or not. Screenshots decided they would go to the desktop by default.
TL;DR the only thing I liked about it was it looked nice. I went into Linux thinking "yes, I'm going to configure this" as such, I spent hours getting Conky/XFCE set up in the exact config I liked it. I went into OSX thinking it should just work in a logical way, and it failed me. With Windows, I add my 2 extra workspaces, autohide my dock, and I'm good.
I'm sure I could complain more about it, but those are the easiest to describe issues that caused me to go back to Windows.

If you want to point me to a motherboard and two 5462 xeon processors then please, be my guest. But I already own this fucker and don't care to look further into it. Again, I went in thinking I'd still be runing OSX. I believe that is important.

I spent a good bit of time trying to get OSx to be something I really enjoyed using, but the effort it took vs the reward I felt I was getting was too low. I much prefer starting from 0 and making something I enjoy, rather than starting from about 75% and trying to fix what's broken.

>>55233691
I changed a good number of things, one of the major things I had to change was how the mouse handled acceleration. I don't remember how it was fucked up, but I very quickly installed something to remedy that issue.
I very much changeable defaults, but the way OSX allowed me to change it was not enough, nor to my liking. It requires a ton of 3rd party software to become something that feels proper. That feels wrong.

On Linux, I was able to get everything I wanted with XFCE and Conky as far as looks. It was minimalist, it was responsive, and it was nice. Windows10 I just changed a default. Mac I had to install software to change how the window manager dealt with "maximizing" windows, add support for window snapping, fix the way mouse acceleration was handled, and I likely could have replaced/removed/altered a good number of other things. That feels wrong, and is obviously not a product I wished to continue using.

Keep in mind we were poor for most of my life because my ma is very sick, and they only bought it as a way to "make up" for all the birthdays and holidays were I didn't get much. It never bothered me.

I let them down very gently and we went back to scam buy and returned it. I had never opened it.

This is so stupid on so many levels, it makes me extremely angry.

My dad uses an ancient Dell shitbook laptop still running XP to store critical business documents. The hard drives gonna give out any day now. I try to tell him his data is in danger and requires urgent backup, but he doesn't listen.

>shutting down my pc by pressing the power button, or holding it will break the pc

Isn't there a chance of corrupting some important system files when you cut the power off the PC?
This might count as "breaking the PC" if you're a normie, because it will stop working correctly and will need to be brought to a technician to be fixed.

It probably won't break your PC (unless you do it in the middle of Windows updating). It can cause problems in the long run if you keep doing day after day.

I have never had any formal training or education for computers and have landed multiple jobs as 'the computer guy' so the thought of being 'that guy' scares me to death, mainly because I've gotten so used to being able to just google things that sometimes I forget even the most basic shit that should be ingrained in my head.

Being the IT bitch I am I don't remember a lot of specific examples but I do have a lot of moments where I have to play detective because the people know nothing about computers and can't even describe what is happening - it just doesn't work.Lots of things like me asking them what version of windows they have and they say 'excel', or people not realizing that all your files and programs don't just magically transfer over to a new machine. People saying their internet on their laptop doesn't work when in actuality they just can't get into their email because something deleted their saved passwords. Having an old lady accidentally rotate her screen display 90 degrees and then trying to talk her through how to get it back. Shit like that. Lots of minor tech illiteracy that leads to big annoying problems later down the road.

I used to work at a small computer repair shop. My town is full of a lot of not-too-bright and tech illiterate people (which consist mostly of meth-heads and senior citizens), and the following would always trigger me:

>People calling desktop wallpaper a "screen saver"
>People calling their computer "My CPU"
>People referring to a hard drive as "memory" or "the gigabytes"
>People refusing to use anti-virus because they were told it would give them more viruses, and trying to argue with me about it

I've also encountered numerous customers mispronouncing "HP Pavilion" as "HP Pavalon".
>>
>>55239428
Anti viruses are memes.
>tfw dumb people are smarter than you
>>
>>55228514

its mostly to do with circuits in series:

"Hey anon, this computer won't power on. It keeps saying "Power Save" and then turning off".

>turning on the monitor will activate the cpu
>>
>>55238051
It can harm the OS or programs if you hold the power button while the PC is doing something important, but pressing the power button to shut it down doesn't do any harm. It's easy to fix if something goes wrong with programs/OS but it won't "break the PC"

it is a powerful machine, no doubt, it's just;
- it sacrifices cooling for size, so it runs really hot under load, which probably limits its life when used heavily, not a good trait for a workstation
- it's not very good value for money

yea, for some reason he can't wrap his mind around the fact that those together will fit into a 2x4 (8-pin) slot
presumably he's only handled 4-pin (2x2) PCI-E power connectors before

I saw a senior level network tech for a top-20 tech company in the world go to an executive's house and set up a comcast xfinity box with an additional 4 port switch then he pulled ethernet up to the upstairs and then plugged the other end into a comcast box. He had 2 or 3 DHCP servers serving up addresses to the printer and I had to go and figure out his fuckup like why does this printer keep saying its IP is different???

Needless to say I put the xfinity box into bridge mode, unplugged the upstairs box, and added some wireless APs because fucknut was relying on the wifi in the xfinity box in this HUGE mansion

And the email page links to the calendar but no they go back to the corporate homepage and start all over... fucking boomers.
