i've used it but only for toy programs and because i was interested in learning other languages.

Scheme (Racket's origin) is interesting to learn because it shows how you can do everything with pairs, lists and recursion without having to write (significantly) more lines of code.

Scheme is also possible to implement in just 500-1000 lines of C or Java.
