So, we were talking TWMs yesterday. Just installed bspwm. Is there any solid documentation for setting up the keybinds?

I am using the HP 17-g121wm Notebook. Trying to run Arch Linux. Has an AMD A10-8700P APU. The screen will randomly shut off 2-5 minutes after booting up, sometimes sooner. The computer will still be running, but the screen itself will be black (the backlight seems to remain on, though). No matter what buttons I press, nothing makes the screen come back on, so I have to push the power button to shut the laptop off and back on.

This problem does not occur when I boot into Windows, but when I boot into Linux (I have tried Ubuntu and Arch linux), this problem persists.

I have tried starting grub with the kernel parameter "nomodeset", but when I do this I am unable to enter a graphical environment because the amdgpu driver depends on Kernal Mode Set (KMS) without nomodeset.

On a server I have postfix and I send mail with it from terminal.
I got told that I for advanced security I should not run "full fucking mail server" on server.
I find that bit questionable because the port postfix uses is not visible outside.
I don't want to use external smtp and put some mail username and password in some config.

I just installed Debian Sid with i3 and lightdm for the first time. I had used Debian Sid in the past few months but with GNOME, and I decided to try a clean install on my laptop with LVM over LUKS encryption from the getgo.

However I'm having some trouble adjusting to this new DE-less life

I'm on a Thinkpad T420, and I was wondering - how do I get the function buttons, audio/volume keys, brightness, and all that stuff to work? Is it a matter of editing config files somewhere, getting some new packages, or what?

Well so far I have the iso mounted onto a CD and I made a 40GB partition in my hard drive for it (I know this is probably way too much but Ive got the space anyway). My next issue was installing a bootloader like GRUB. I got stuck on whether I have to do that first or boot up the OS.

Okay let's go step by step.

Which ISO did you mount on the CD? Was it a net install or the full thing? Was it the official one or the unofficial one that includes non-free firmware?

If your answer to either of those is "I don't know", it's probably the full thing and the official one.

About the partition size - it's best you think things through before you install, or you'll roll your eyes when you realize you assigned too little/too much space to the partition than you needed. So ask yourself: What do you use Windows for? What would you like to use Linux for?

In my case, I went balls to the wall and put all my personal data (Documents, Photos, Videos, Music, etc) out of Windows, put it in an external HDD for moving, and left Windows with basically nothing personal - just the base install, about 8 games, Firefox, stuff like that. I put everything else on Debian as I made it my main OS.

Since this was my use case, I shrunk the Windows partition to make it quite small, to make room for Debian. But I ask you, what would you like to use your Linux for? Just messing around or a big move? That determines how much size you want to put into it

Question, did you burn the ISO as MBR or as UEFI? And furthermore, is your Windows 10 installed as UEFI? Because you're going to want to match UEFI with UEFI or things can get weird.

Assuming everything checks out there, all left to do is turn the PC off, insert the CD, boot it up, and spam F12 to get to the boot selection screen (this is before Windows, in your BIOS). Select your CD from the devices, and start the installing procedure. When it comes time to partition, select MANUAL, not guided. You want to partition yourself to make sure your Windows things stay nice and quiet where you left them. With 40 GB, you'll want to use your free space like this: / (root) with 15-20 GB, swap with however much RAM you have (if above 8GB, dont bother with making a swap partition), and the rest in /home. Just make sure you don't touch the EFI or Windows partitions when doing this and you're all set!

Don't worry, GRUB gets installed AFTER Debian is done installing. The installer will take care of it.

The easiest way to check is: Go to your Disk Management utility in Windows, right click on your Windows partitions and check if their Properties say GPT or MBR. If they're GPT, your Windows is probably installed in UEFI mode. I'm sure if you google "is my windows UEFI or Legacy" you'll find a more concrete answer.

If it is UEFI, then you want to make sure your installation disc is also UEFI. When you boot your computer, before it goes to Windows, spam F2 or F12 to go to your BIOS menu. Somewhere in Boot settings, select "UEFI Only" instead of "UEFI and Legacy". Then insert the disc, reboot, spam F12 again, and check to see if it lets you pick the disc. If it does, congratulations, you're good to go

I have an encrypted TrueCrypt volume that I would normally access with the following command:

So far I've been able to do so with no problem on Debian, at some point I've had to mount it manually like so...

$ mount /dev/container-name /media/whatever

After I upgraded to Jessie I didn't have to mount it manually for some reason, so just doing the first command would suffice, but not anymore, after I installed xubuntu very recently, now I get the following error:

Device /dev/loop0 is too small.

What I've tried:

sudo modprob loop

But didn't work, even after a reboot, I get the same error, at some point I tried using losetup but it says that "/dev/loop0" doesn't exist, which is false, as I can see it in the /dev directory.

What should I do?

what we did was to find any package with snd this is to test what's inside that snd and if it matches those deps, then the problem lies within the compilation else then it is a matter of installing something from this https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=snd&searchon=all&suite=stable&section=all

any of you guys getting high cpu temps on ubuntu 16.04? i installed it on my new laptop and it was running at 85c while watching video and using chromium. at first i thought the computer was just a piece of shit but i switched to an arch based distro last night and now it's running at 45c doing the same things
