Age old quandry of upgrade old system or rebuild new one. My specifics serve only as a startoff for your thoughts and experiences.
What do you advise?
2010 i3 based system I built has been working faithfully non-stop but chokes out when I edit video.
I could get a used i7 chip for $100. I'd also consider investing in a new power supply.
OR, I could get a current gen i5-6500, Gigabyte GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 and some DDR4 ram.
On the one hand I could update the cpu and invest a little on a power supply and case OR keept my current case and power supply and buy new cpu, mobo & ram.
You could also get a newer GPU that offers support for h.265 encode/decode.
Cards that support this: 900 series/1000 series/400 series.
Honestly your CPU is always going to be "choked out" while video editing unless you buy something like a 6/8 core and only allocate 4 cores to the video editing process.
Newer intel iGPU's also support h.265 encode/decode as well albeit far slower than dedicated cards.
Personally, I would never get an i3 or an i5 for video editing

>h.265
Did you hear the sound of me slapping my forehead all the way over there.

>H.265 is a joke man
>1/2 the file size for the same quality?!
>HA! I only make videos in WMM!!!

I meant that is propably why my rendering has been freezing up.
Probably another reason to upgrade the whole computer because it needs to be up to date with software / codecs / etc.
