Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

The wierd thing is, GTK is using GIMP's filepicker, which already _had_ thumbnail preview (a while back), but it got also removed for whatever reason.

For GTK2 there was a patch wich never made it into upstream since people are working on GTK3 and GTK2 is in "only security fixes" mode.

We can only wait, or downgrade -> >>55205149 I guess.

Trying Linux for the first time, wish me luck!

Creating Windows recovery disks for my laptop right now, it's on the last disk. Just downloaded the Live ISO for Lubuntu, trying to figure out how to turn the USB drive into a bootable one without bricking it, actually I might just use one of the spare blank DVDs laying around, can't afford to risk bricking the flash drive right now.

Also want to try Xubuntu. We'll see which one works better for my slow laptop.

Also, when Lubuntu switches to Cutie, is it gonna be a pain in the ass to reinstall, or will it be more like an upgrade?

If you want to virtualize, it's better to go with QEMU/KVM, that way you get good results with the virtualized machines. Also before buying, never go for Intel K processors (the overclockable ones), because they dont have Vt-d and IOMMU on them.

it's build into the kernel, so it always works, unlike virtual box witch needs to be recompiled every kernel update.

I'm also pretty sure virtual box isn't totally free software and has weird license. Oh and QEMU/KVM has different frontends such as gnome boxes, terminal, etc.

There is pretty much 0 reason to use virtual box over qemu on linux

yast let's you have the same level of granularity with a gui tool (you still need to know what you're doing)

the Open Build Service =OpenSuses's AUR has a definite security and signing policy (i. e. you're not just installing random code from the internet)
packman repo (an external AURlike repo) is about the same, except it is externaly/unnoficially maintained

zypper patterns are similar to gentoo overlays except they're distro maintained, so you can actually build a tumbleweed from scratch just like an archinstall with susestudio or just uninstalling/installing the patterns once you've installed opensuse

susestudio let's you export your curent status of your distro (custom repos, configs, etc) to a disk image, cloud image or even an installation disk

since opensuse just like fedora, backs and comes from an enterprisey distro, some propietary stuff like SPSS has native installers/support

There's not a universal reason to do this, nor is there one not to. It depends what your system is, what you need from the system, what your users are etc.

For me its really no problem to remember to manually update stuff every now and then, and I would be annoyed if I had to stop it while doing something fairly cpu-intensive when my computer can become very laggy (poor, yes I am poor).

I am sure for some people, it would be conveneient. If you wanna do it, cool. But its not for everyone.

Release notes of a third party package should tell you if the dependencies required are already from a default install, self contained, or require additional packages. I'm going to assume you have a Wi-Fi adaptor. (If you don't and it's just a desktop, then you just need an ethernet cable)

If the former, you will need to either
a) Use an ethernet cord to download the wifi firmware your computer needs (it should tell you during install, im sure there's a way to check post-install however, look it up). Aptitude install it

If you have to ask, you're probably better off in testing. And I don't mean that in an offensive way, I mean it in a practical way. If you don't need bleeding edge, then there's no real reason to be on bleeding edge.

If something breaks and takes a long time to get the fix from unstable to pass to testing, just switch to unstable.

I run Testing on my Desktop and Unstable on my Laptop, because I like to mess around in my laptop more. From personal experience, both are great and have never broken on me. Responsible use of aptitude and apt-listbugs helps you be safe from bugs and broken updates.

Just use common sense when you check what aptitude is going to remove when upgrading, and if you don't like it (like it wanting to remove your whole DE because it's in the process of upgrading in the repos and it's not done yet), wait.

Stable is great for server use, but for a desktop user, it's ancient. Absolutely ancient and a pain to use beyond the most basic things.

>install Debian Stable on my dad's laptop so he can have a reliable OS in which to do his basic activities, like an office suite, web browser, and media.
>obviously installing Flash is a big no no (even pepperflash)
>I install MPV so he can watch his movies and soccer streams easily, along with Open With... extension in Firefox so it's very easy for him
>Stable's MPV is ANCIENT and doesn't work properly anymore for all the things I'm used to it doing
>There's no backport for it
>Oh well, I might as well learn how to make my own home-built backport following this guide
>It's a clusterfuck because my package needs a gorillion dependencies which I'd need to also backport
>This is quickly getting out of hand for a simple fucking MPV that just werks for my dad
>Fuck it
>Upgrade it to testing

Stable on Desktops is kind of a pain. Testing/Unstable is the way to go.

You're exaggerating a bit of how old Debian packages are. Yeah, they're not bleeding edge, but you still get security patches and it's going to be more stable than testing is. Debian stable really isn't that bad if you don't mind older packages.

After my failed incursion into custom backports (the package was from Sid), I gave up on it. I've never built anything from source, and I guess I supposed that with the dependency hell I faced in the previous step I wouldn't get anywhere by doing the latter.

>>55212502
Okay, okay. They're not ancient, but if you're practically married to some software that is not easily backported, and that lacks essential features in the release that shipped with Stable, you're not in for a fun time.

I just view Testing as the EZ button that makes everything less complicated for me, and at the end of the day, that's the route to go for the less experienced Linux users such as myself

I think I fucked my GRUB. I have two HDDs, one for boot partition / Ubuntu, and the other one for swap space / Windows XP / Windows 7. I installed XP and 7 with their loaders in the boot partition (in a different drive than the system files), and up to that point both worked alright with the Windows boot loader. After installing Ubuntu I can see Windows 7 in the GRUB but it won't boot.

When installing Ubuntu I selected the Ubuntu partition and the swap partition alright, and I set the loader to "Windows 7 (Loader)" (the boot partition) just like it does it when you let it do it automatically. What happened and how can I fix it?

Let's say I am writing on a thesis as part of my curriculum. I came up with the topic myself, on paper the university supported me during my research but in practice I sat at home programming something and writing a thesis about it.
I have to hand in three copies: one for the supervising professor, one for the other examiner and one for the university's library. I'm going to go to a copy shop and print and bind three copies.

Let's now say I want to ensure readers have the ability to study the source (LaTeX code), modify it and publish copies, modified or unmodified. Do I just put a page in each copy where it says the work is licensed under the GPL, or do I have to go to some lawyer or something and register it, or what?

try 'journalctl | grep -i alsa'

Or kill alsa, then try starting alsactl with relevant options (eg --debug, -s, read the manual)

I thought "p" meant "16:9 aspect ratio," making "768p" equivalent to 1366x768. Kinda like how 720p is 1280x720, or 1080p is 1920x1080, and so on.

What size would you assign to each of these partitions for an initial installation?

Another question.
I work as a software dev for a large-ish research institute. I don't know what kind of license my supervisor is going to slap on it. Is the following viable if he decides to use a nonfree license?
> go home
> privately develop software tools that are useful for the software I am developing at work
> publish privately-developed tools under GPLv3
> insert those software tools into work software developed by me
> due to copyleft supervisor is forced to use GPLv3 for the software or has to develop alternate version of those tools to avoid copyright issues

It depends on the contract you signed when you took the job. Alot of companies make you sign away your rights to personal projects because they may contain parts of code you developed for the company, as well as non-compete.This also seems illegal
>>
>>55213406
>>55213393
>>55213272
>it's another "It's just Linux" dilemma
>>
>>55213472
It's not a private company but rather a state-funded research institute. I'll have to check but I'm pretty sure the only code I don't have any rights to is the code I develop at work, meaning that code I make in my spare time is my own and I am the sole person who governs its publication and license.
Of course the supervisor might second-guess my decision to include copylefted code and make me develop an alternative, or fire me if I inject my own copylefted code and then sue them for not including the GPLv3. Also a case where I sue someone for something that was pretty much my own fault will likely be thrown out of court anyway.
>>
>>55213506
Nobody calls Linux Gnu+Linux outside of /g/. I mean, the Linux project is using some codes published under GPL license, hence was forced to be under the same license by the metastasis clause of the GPL.

But whatever. It's pointless to argue on such things. You'll say stuff, I'll say stuff and in the end neither you nor I will change his mind.

>"Well, I think it's justified, but it's justified if you actually make a GNU distribution of Linux ... the same way that I think that "Red Hat Linux" is fine, or "SuSE Linux" or "Debian Linux", because if you actually make your own distribution of Linux, you get to name the thing, but calling Linux in general "GNU Linux" I think is just ridiculous."
