Many people who write FOSS are paid. There are many companies that invest heavily in FOSS. The biggest contributors to Linux are large corporations.

There is a huge amount of high-quality FOSS. Gimp is not an example, but there are many cases where FOSS crushes anything proprietary. For example: web browsers, media players, kernels, and filesystems.
