How can anyone know if it has a back door. No one can see the source code to see if it has malicious features.

firmware for what? You know, unless you explicitly bought hardware that supports Free firmware, it's almost certainly proprietary. If your CPU is from intel or amd and your notebook is not a custom flashed T60 or so, you're pretty much guaranteed to be compromised already.

* they're not releasing sources because they've got something to hide. Particularly true about firmware, cause nobody pays for the software when they buy a processor, so lost profits is not an argument against releasing sources
* given the pathetic record of major corporations complying with NSA requests for backdoors it should be considered the standard practice

Non-free doesn't necessarily mean closed source. It may be software that has a slightly different license that doesn't fit the free software criteria. Which are ridiculous.
