I used to work designing Industrial process control systems. My company specialized in solenoid valves, pneumatic actuators, and flow control valves.

Sales in this field can be fairly lucrative. I belive the operators and engineers made at least 60k/year here in California.

You shouldn't have a tough time getting into the field as long as you have some experience dealing with technical things and a passion for fluid dynamics.

The degree depends on what you want to do. If you do what I did, you don't need a degree, but you do need to pay a lot of attention to detail.

Also I have Java, Python, C/C++ programming and analog/digital electronics skills from two unfinished university degrees. Would that be a plus or does the industrial automation field prefer combining and configuring existing solutions?

Depends if you are working on the parts directly or if you are simply designing the system really.
