This is the alternative build with an i5. Without the GPU this is $420 (blaze it)

most motherboards just work, OEMs use bottom of the barrel-tier microATX motherboards for 99.9% of PC builds and they run for years w/o a problem. Don't be afraid of a $60 motherboard. Just read tons of reviews and dont get a shit model

I mean, not inherently. The i3 likes the overclocked RAM supported by the z170 mobo, and that is the cheapest z170 mobo I could find.

I suppose that the i5 is just faster and wouldn't bottleneck the GPU like the i3 would, so while the mobo would be more future-proof, that may not matter.

If there's one thing you should never cheap out on, it's the PSU. I know 650w is overkill, but it's cheaper than the 500-550w.
