I have a quartzite countertop designed like pic related, that is used as a computer desk and I gotta say its really cold. like super cold all the time. if you're gaming you can rest your arms in the same spot for two hours straight and your arms will go numb and the stone will be as cold as it was when you started

it also thaws things out at an alarming rate. if you put a glass of ice water on it the ice will melt in a few minutes. so i guess in that way it might seem warm.

Wood varies wildly but I would say max 100$ for that piece of wood. Varnish/stain/poly is another 30$ or so max.

To all the people suggesting building your own desk: Yes, it's a great option and can get you a superior finished product for a reasonable price. Comparing it to building a computer is just flawed though. Building a computer doesn't require much more than a flat surface to lay the case on and a #2 Phillips screwdriver. Building a desk is a much more significant undertaking in terms of space and tools required, and not everyone has that. I certainly don't have room to do it in my condo.

I built my own concrete desk out of wood and concrete from home depot.

Concrete is fucking heavy. I would only recommend it if you never plan on moving the desk. You're going to need a rotary polisher if you want to /diy/ because consumer concrete countertops are EXPENSIVE. Mine cost $15 and several hours of my time.

I made my desk out of two sawhorses, some 2X4s and a sheet of OSB.

I set a sheet of tempered glass on top and I can literally jump up and down on it.

Yes. If you have timber industry near and can get deals hard wood and you have half a dozen meter long glue clamps and a plane, then yes you can make it yourself significantly cheaper. If you don't, 300+$ is not a rip off price for the finished result.

Personally I'd say screw it and use Spruce Pine Fir for a 10th of the cost. In my opinion it looks good stained and small dings in the table add character, don't need hardwood. Can always sand it down and repaint.
