How does Samsung Gear VR compare to more expensive vr like Occulus rift and the like?
I know it's not gonna be the same, but I have heard that Gear VR is actually not that bad. Anyone tried them?

No idea, only got this email the other day, and I ordered the fucking thing in February.
>>
it used to be cool with the built-in store, but now it's completely fucking awesome.

https://riftcat.com/vridge opened up the entire catalog of steamVR games with it, making it a wireless capable Rift (with a better panel if you have an S7).

You can play stuff like Dolphin-VR, use the leap motion and other motion controls, and it's pretty much indistinguishable from the rift.

HTC Vive has the roomscale advantage for sure, but given the overpriced tech demos it's not worth it to me. This is perfect to tide me over until it comes down in price.

I'm skeptical of this working very well. Streaming 2k video at 90 FPS over wifi is going to use a ton of bandwidth. There's gotta be a noticeable amount of latency, and it wouldn't have positional tracking.

Have you used it? How does it compare to the Rift or Vive?

The innovators edition has USB passthrough for data if bandwidth/latency is a concern, but I use a Nighthawk X8 so it's no problem.

I'm gonna try double-blind tests with friends just to see if a difference is perceptible at all.
Given how good it is this early on, I can see it being a serious competitor in the future.

Like all the other VR solutions, it needs external tools like TrackIR or VrTracker for positional. It's not a big deal to me, since I don't feel like moving around in the room.

Theres also an app that does this with google carboard devices called trinus, I don't know how it compares though but it works very well over a wired connection.

I used Trinus a lot before I got the Gear. It's awesome for getting the most out of cardboard stuff, but it has trouble using the Gear's added sensors.

The biggest difference is that Vridge lets you use the whole SteamVR system. The UI, controller support and all the games work just like a Vive.
