I know /g/ isn't my personal tech support, I just wanted your opinions on this hard drive I'm dealing with.

It's a 2.5 Toshiba 500GB HDD. I've tried formatting many, many times and it seems to work in Windows but not OSX. I need to format it HFS, but I'm getting these errors:

>Writebuffer: pwrite input/output error
>newfs_hfs: write (sector 0): invalid argument
>file system formatter failed

It just keeps throwing errors. Strangely it formatted fine on another macbook, but I can't confirm I would actually be able to install homOSeX.

Do you think it's a problem with the SATA cable or is the drive fucked?

Try
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=1M
on a UNIX box. (/dev/sda is the special code for Toshiba HDDs)
