I always like it when people display their own fucking stupidity, e.g. you claiming stuff about long taking compression right below options that disable compression.
The only bad thing is that dealing with ppl like you is so time consuming...

Maybe get a decent computer. My laptop has no problem taking such a screenshot without pausing.

haasn seems to have a separate program watching that folder for screendumps, and runs said dumps through ImageMagick instead of compressing them inside an mpv thread. I imagine that one day this will be handed off to another thread more efficiently.

Wait, am I having a stroke?
With user-shaders="~~/shaders/nnedi3-nns128-win8x6-all.hook" I have no performance decrease (running an intel Core i7 2600k + R9 390 8GB)!

With the nnedi3 preset in mpv I used to have choppy playback even with only 16 neurons!

Is the shader way better than the preset or does it just not work?
>>
>>55133787
It seems exploitative. It has a closed-source core and it's trying to encourage an ecosystem of open-source plugins. If it becomes popular, it will be because of its community, but they won't give back by opening their own code. The devs are probably cut from the same egotistical Doom9 cloth as madshi. Only mpv seems to care about improving the state of video playback as a whole by opening their own code. Now anyone can make their own video player using libmpv and anyone can use the same algorithms as mpv just by studying mpv's code.

Post your entire config on pastebin and link it here.

You need to run it using the profile in Haasn's conf.

# Image files (e.g. for using mpv as a pseudo image viewer)
vo=opengl-hq:scale=ewa_lanczossharp:background=0.1
input-conf=~~/input-image.conf

>>

Remove "deband", it's already built into opengl-hq. Remove "prescale-downscaling-threshold=1.5", it doesn't work with user shaders. You could try putting user-shaders="~~/shaders/nnedi3-nns128-win8x6-all.hook" at the end.

If you mean by quality if the stream lags/stutters, that kinda depends on your connection speed and the torrent availability, but it should be fine. Takes a few seconds to start the video, though.

If you mean the video quality, there's no difference between streaming and downloading.

The rorgoroth builds come with an updater script, you actually need to run that to get updates to mpv and angle dll's.
Latest build from updates works fine so you must have updates mpv.exe/com manually but not the dll files.

Restarting windows did the work, anyways I've noticed that mpv kinda adds black borders.

Example;

Forgot to add;

This mostly happens when resizing/downscaling., I honestly though it was the video itself, but after using borderless I don't think it is.

Anyways I might test a bit more and see if I can find out why it happens.

That has compression off, so it takes a long ass time due to the slow IO you have, turn compression to 5 and you will notice a huge improvement, 8 might be slower than 5 since it's much more demanding
mpv uses libpng to make PNG's, so it's the same as pretty much every other program out there
Haasn saves to ram and then compresses with IM, which has more options for everything, so he doesn't suffer the IO hit
You shouldn't blindly copy paste stuff, just stick to the defaults of you're too dumb to read the manual

Frames have been dropping with
vo=opengl-hq:icc-profile-auto
even with 50MB cache, and I realized that mpv falls back to software decoding.
I've been looking around Github and came to the conclusion that I should use
hwdec=videotoolbox
(an OS X only decoder). It still falls back to software decoding.
Also tried:
hwdec=vdpau
hwdec=auto

but the problem persists.

Some solutions include recompiling newer versions of ffmpeg through git, and then reinstalling mpv, but I'm using brew.

Any suggestions?

>how do I use the function (F1, F2...F12) keys in input.conf?
Use:

>>
>>55152410
>I've been looking around Github and came to the conclusion that I should use
Hardware decoding in general only works on a very very small set of video codecs. Pretty much only h264 works and only when it's not a complex encode (Only up to a certain "level": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC#Levels). Modern hardware (with equally modern drivers) can also hwdec h265 content.
You can also just use hwdec=auto btw.
>>

>Also tried:
>hwdec=vdpau

The file I'm trying to play is Coalgirls' Evangelion 3.33, which is H.264 and 5.1 FLAC.
I tried removing the cache and hwdec options, and playback seems to be smoother.
mpv doesn't say whether it's "Using software decoding" as a result.

I'd like to confirm whether mpv still falls back to software without the option. How can I go about this?

This is literally why everyone sane hates SVP. SVP is not smart enough to know it's not supposed to interpolate hardsubs. It's also not smart enough to interpolate motion in the foreground and background of a scene at the same time. These kind of artifacts occur to a lesser degree in pretty much everything interpolated by SVP. Don't use SVP.

Just the notes.
https://www.matroska.org/technical/specs/notes.html#TrackOperation

Segment linking

Hard linking

This linking can also be called splitting. It's the operation of cutting one segment in several parts. The resulting parts should play as if it was just one part (the original segment). That means the timecode of each part follows the ones from the previous parts. The track numbers are the same. The chapters only match the current segment (unless the edition is ordered, where all parts should be in each segment). And most important, the NextUID and PrevUID points the respective segment UIDs.

Soft linking

Soft linking is used by codec chapters. They can reference another segment and jump on that Segment. The way the segments are described are internal to the chapter codec and unknown to the matroska level. But there are elements in the Segment Information (ChapterTranslate) that can translate a value representing a segment in the chapter codec and to the current Segment UID. All segments that could be used in a file/segment this way should be marked as members of the same family (SegmentFamily), so that the player can quickly switch from one to the other.

I'm using a recent release on Windows 10 and it seems to run better for me than MPC-HC on default settings. Especially when there's artistic soft subs going on.

Pic related. MPC-HC performance going to shit in a panning scene for no reason. Switching from the internal subtitle renderer fixes it but xy-vsfilter is very crash prone for me. Turning off animated subtitles also fixes the insane performance spikes but that makes no sense because these subs aren't even animated. I've already ran that, didn't help. I've also gone through half a dozen Nvidia drivers and MPC-HC versions. Messed with the Nvidia control panel options. Used DDU. Tried with and without a pagefile.
Windows Media Player and mpv both play the same video fine with subtitles. It also runs fine without any Nvidia drivers installed at all, using some sort of basic Windows driver.

I've tried just about everything at this point short of reinstalling Windows because I'm not certain that will help. This install was a clean one on an SSD only two months old and has only just gotten comfy. Everything was fine on Windows 7.

What happens if you run hwdec=auto, if you're not already, in MPV? Using backend=dxinterop, that is.
Seems very weird that it doesn't work well using EVR.
About that, are you using EVR or EVR-CP in MPC?
>>
>>55159143
I use hwdec=auto. It defaults to d3d11va unless I add backend=dxinterop in which case it uses dxva2 and the colours are washed out with dxva2. Performance is fine in mpv every time, even with opengl-hq and interpolation. Or not using hardware decoding at all.

I'm using EVR-CP in MPC-HC, EVR doesn't seem to support subtitles for me and any option that does has the same stuttering problems until I disable (animated) subtitles or switch to another subtitle renderer.
>>

>>
>>55159395
I've pretty much moved to mpv now and it's a fine replacement. It's just weird how this problem with MPC-HC's internal subtitle renderer seems unique to my system. Ok so, you're right that on Windows, desktop OpenGL with the WGL APIs is worse than Direct3D for video. This is the case to varying degrees with all drivers. I'm not sure if it's because there's something wrong with the drivers themselves, or if the kernel APIs Microsoft exposes to OpenGL drivers are inadequate, but the fact is, OpenGL on Windows has less accurate frame-timing, gives no guarantees over latency, and is generally buggier and less likely to support a modern feature-set than Direct3D. If you're lucky, and you have recent Nvidia hardware, the difference between GL and D3D might not be noticeable, but it's very noticeable for a lot of people. (It's also worth mentioning that this is not the case for Linux or macOS running on equivalent hardware.)

mpv has a few solutions for this. It has a Direct3D renderer (vo=direct3d_shaders), but its quality is nowhere near as good as the OpenGL renderer, so it's not recommended (it's only about as good as VLC's renderers.)

There is also vo=opengl-hq:backend=dxinterop. This uses OpenGL to render frames to a texture and presents the texture with Direct3D 9Ex. This would be the ideal solution if it actually worked, since it sidesteps the frame-timing and latency issues. Unfortunately, it only works on modern drivers. It makes pretty textbook use of the WGL_NV_DX_interop extension, but apparently this extension is buggy as hell on older Intel and AMD drivers and can cause crashes.

The proper solution is vo=opengl-hq:backend=angle. This uses Google's ANGLE to translate OpenGL ES to Direct3D11. Google Chrome actually uses ANGLE for all rendering (not just WebGL,) so it should be pretty solid. Until recently, mpv didn't support things like colour management on ANGLE, but now all features are supported. The only problem is, it's not present in the mpv.srsfckn.biz builds yet. When it is, it will become the new default renderer and hopefully all these issues will go away.
>>
>>55170963
TL;DR, use vo=opengl-hq:backend=dxinterop if it works for you, that is, if it doesn't immediately crash and it doesn't crash when you resize the window.

If it doesn't work for you, use one of the unstable builds in the OP or wait for mpv 0.18.0, which will use ANGLE by default and jest werk out of the box.

>I'm not sure if it's because there's something wrong with the drivers themselves
It's because of Microsoft's anti-competitive strategies. They desperately try and cripple OpenGL on Windows to make DirectX seem better in comparison.

Note that OpenGL on Linux easily outperforms DirectX on Windows when running the same code (shaders)
>>
>>55158780
Neither. It's either intentional on mpv's part or mis-designed on Wayland's part, depending on which side you take. Most Wayland compositors expect client applications to draw their own window decorations, hence, you can only have window decorations if you use a complex GUI toolkit like Qt or GTK+. mpv doesn't use such toolkits, so it doesn't draw window decorations.

Apparently there are emerging protocols for server-side decorations, where the Wayland compositor is in charge of drawing window decorations, but I'm not sure what state they're at. If there is a decent way for mpv to request server-side decorations from the compositors that support them, mpv should probably use it.

If you want to put your configs on GitHub, you should probably learn how to use Git. It's possible to use GitHub without Git through the web interface, but it's probably more trouble than it's worth to use it that way, since you'd have to manually copy each change into your web browser. If you use it that way, you might as well just use any pastebin.

That said, it's not too hard to learn the basics of Git, and Git is a useful skill that should even make you more employable.

Not necessarily true. The direct3d VO uses Direct3D9, dxinterop uses 9Ex (but the version does not matter in this case) and ANGLE can use 9 or 11.

There's always the hope that Microsoft has changed strategy. Platform-exclusive APIs are fine when you're in the lead, but they know they're giving up market share to mobile for casual gaming. Microsoft contribute to ANGLE and they recently released Edge's GLSL->HLSL translator in the hopes that people will use it to port iOS and Android games to Windows Phone and the Windows Store.

If you need to ask it's probably nothing you want. You need to initialize a version control system and then handle and update/modify/commit each file in this system. If you don't have a real usecase where you get an advantage out of it it would just mean having an overhead for nothing.

It's neat for synchronizing the files/configuration over multiple devices but there are easier methods for this that come with less overhead (e.g. rsync).

When you already know it and have a console-related/based working "style" then using a version control system additionally changes nearly nothing. In this case it's simple and nearly no overhead for the advantages you gain.

Notice how more and more games are getting ported to Linux these days, despite low market shares (meaning developers are CHOOSING to use cross-platform APIs over platform-specific APIs even though their user base is 99% windows). The days of the monopoly are coming to an end

>Ark: Survival Evolved (pre-release but playable)

2015 since Jun 20:
>Infinifactory
>SWKOTOR II: The Sith Lords
>Shadowrun: Hong Kong
>Soma
>Wasteland II: Director's Cut
>Divinity: Original Sin (Enhanced Edition)
>Alien: Isolation - The Collection
>Saints Row IV
>Saints Row: Gat out of Hell

For a fair comparison, here's a list of Windows-only games release in 2016 that I recognize:

>Assassin's Creed Chronicles
>Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
>Darkest Dungeon
>Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster
>Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak
>The Witness
>Rise of the Tomb Raider
>Tales of Symphonia HD
>Dying Light: The Following
>Unravel
>Elite Dangerous: Arena
>Layers of Fear
>Street Fighter V
>Far Cry Primal
>Gears of War: Ultimate Edition
>Tom Clancy's The Division
>Need for Speed
>Trackmania Turbo
>Killer Instinct: Season 3
>The Walking Dead: Michonne
>Ashes of the Singularity
>Quantum Break
>Dark Souls III
>Everybody's Gone to the Rapture
>Final Fantasy IX

So in summary, the ratio of Windows to Linux games is about 4:1. Considering the market share is like 100:1, that says something pretty strong about developer preference for cross-platform engines/SDKs/APIs.

I expect this number to rise further

>I feel as though you are forgetting to add indie games and such, but even than, the list literally destroys the linux list.
I'm just copy/pasting from the wikipedia page I linked. No more, no less.

Also, I didn't list all of the “literal who” games, I only listed ones whose names I have, at least partially, seen somewhere before.

(For example, I've never heard of Assassin's Creed Chronicles but I've heard of Assassin's Creed, so that counts for me)

If you want to list no-name games, browser games, mobile ports etc. then Linux's list would probably end up destroying Windows simply by virtue of mobile phones being the dominant platform.

As for my personal interest/taste, these are the only games that I found worth playing on those lists:

Linux:
>Firewatch
>Superhot
>Infinifactory
>Soma

Windows-only:
>The Witness
>Everybody's Gone to the Rapture

In fact, of all the games I've played in the last 2-3 years, the majority run natively on Linux. But then again, that's just because I don't really like the shitty big name AAA “Ultra Game XVII: HD remix, now with more brown and gray textures” garbage.

Of course it does and he said so himself, that was not the purpose of the list. Have you never had any kind of reading comprehension in school?

The point here is that the ratio of Linux (compared to Windows) games is higher (and constantly getting higher) than the ratio of consumers using Linux (compared to Windows). So there must be _something_ making them do this because the Linux desktop market is really not increasing, just the games available on Linux are.
>>

Due to mobile phones, tablets, etc.; more and more engines like unity or the unreal engine are understanding the value of being cross-platform

Developers using these engines can therefore benefit from cross-platformness for free, with no real effort on their part

I mean, the only thing that's not really portable between Windows and Linux are the following:

1. Direct3D vs OpenGL
(This is usually abstracted away by graphics engines in modern games, and these are usually cross-platform for reasons above)

2. DRM (thanks to platforms like Steam which run on both Windows and Linux, this is also abstracted away in a platform-independent way)

(Also, I wonder how many of those “windows only” games run via WINE)
>>
>>55172670
Also
3. Sound code (abstracted away via stuff like OpenAL, fmod, or in-engine code)

4. Networking code (abstracted away via engine code most of the time, also irrelevant for single player games)

The listed games are not mobile games though (or are they?). Also, a mobile version of a game is usually a separate program and shares only very little parts (if at all) of the code base. There are usually just too many differences and a lot of changes have to be done.
Also, while multiple engines being cross-platform is certainly true, it's also nothing new. More widespread engines like Unity have been so for a longer time, far longer than the increasing appearance of games on Linux.

Blizzard is a company that so far released pretty much every of their games for Windows and Mac OS. Their games always had an OpenGL implementation yet they NEVER released it for linux similar to LoL running on OSX (using OpenGL) without there any linux port existing.
So I'm not sure if Blizzard is a good example for a movement/change that's supposed to happen recently.

>>Also, all of their other games run on WINE (WoW, Starcraft II, HotS, Hearthstone and Diablo III run perfectly), so I have little doubt that Overwatch will be supported too, in a bit of time.
With worst performance.

Nope, I get better performance under WINE than I do on Windows natively (in WoW, LoL, SC2 and D3. Haven't tested the others)

Who cares how is that even relevant you dumbass, all the games run better on windows than on linux, even valve's games which is the only company to kiss linux balls so much to the point that they've wasted money on making their own failed distro

Not this guy but that really depends. I've played games on Wine with very very little penalty however I usually use wine to play old games (<2000) and they usually run like shit performance wise.
