Nice, a while ago I stumbled upon a XT clone for just a few bucks, with keyboard, monitor(mda), printer, been working on that.
Just finished replacing the Hercules card it had with a EGA one (what someone was selling for cents just laying in a box of scraps), supporting Hercules and CGA emulation, EGA monochrome and still can keep the nice green phosphor monitor.

I have a relevant question. Where does one get vintage hardware? I've always kind of wanted one of the original model thinkpads to play with, I thought I could find one cheap on eBay but I can't find them anywhere. They're not considered valuable are they?

Also, where could I get a monochrome dumb terminal like they used to use as thin clients for mainframes in the 70s? I don't know why but they make me kind of hard. Pic related

>Where does one get vintage hardware?

You missed the train.

>At this point most of them are scrapped

>you might find one for sale by a group of professional second hand "merchants" for an absolutely insane and idiotic price

>you won't find any for free or low price because aforementioned professional dealers INSTANTLY jump on every ad in the newspaper or ebay they find to buy it and sell it for profit

I once called some guy who sold an original IBM PC with EVERYTHING, keyboard, monitor, printer, working condition, clean for $50 and he said on the phone, annoyed and almost exhausted that faggot sellers began to call him at 4am in the morning and kept calling him if it's still available and he had to turn off the phone for two days.

as always, greed fucks up everything for everyone.
>>
>>55115086
original, early thinkpads are extremely expensive if theyre working and come with all the extra shit
slightly less old ones like this one in the attached pic (that i forgot to keep bidding on) arent anywhere near as expensive, but give a similar experience

also, you can buy the terminal in your pic for a cool 500$
http://www.ebay.com/itm/252345620122

ebay is the best bet for vintage electronics, this kinda stuff is almost never on any other site
>>
>>55115147
How does that make sense? I though they were produced on such a massive scale that they could never become scarce enough to be collectible. Didn't every corporation that was anything in the 70s have hundreds and hundreds of those dumb terminals like in my picture? I thought they were just too common to be valuable.
>>
>>55115173
>I though they were produced on such a massive scale that they could never become scarce enough to be collectible.

They got scrapped just on the same massive scale.

A LONG TIME went by when no one cared about old computers and now they became "collectibles" when there are almost non left.
Probably also a reason why they became collectibles, duh.

the original 700/300 are not going to be cheap, other than the hoardes of gullible /tpg/ hipsters that will pay out the ass for meme cred, they are inherently pretty collectable, and very rare, thanks to being an expensive luxury when even regular computers were pretty pointless purchases for many

>where could I get a monochrome dumb terminal
really the only place you can source those cheaply anymore are from government/corporate liquidation auction hoarders who bought them by the palletload, dumb terminals were pretty much shoah'd with the death of traditional timesharing in the '90s and 2000s

otherwise be prepared to pay out the ass, I can't even source a keyboard for one of your pic for under $100, I fucking hate /mkg/tards for driving up keyboard prices so much
>>
>>55115173
That's the problem. Companies just scrap entire fleets of computers/terminals whenever they get the new one in. Most of them even require a certificate saying that all the equipment was scrapped and can't be sold.

That's what enrages me the most.

I knew I wasn't likely to get a hold of an original Thinkpad. My computer systems wing had one in a glass case with an old iMac and some other cheap everyday shit, I asked the instructor who put them there if we could turn it on and fuck around with it, and he laughed at me until he realized I was serious.

And I guess the /mkg/tards would say, "I fucking hate modern keyboard manufacturers for sucking so much donkey dick I have to buy old ones instead". I can understand wanting the quality.

The funny thing is that the people that work in those places take whatever they want. They just go like "Let's see what we got today" at the end of the day and start putting things in their cars. T. My father has a friend who works in one of those places.
>>
>>55115254
>People like me who enjoy vintage hardware and are not looking to make profit with those are majorly fucked by those evil shenanigans.
the great corporate leaders of the world aren't holding secret meetings at the legion of doom scheming on ways to fuck you out of your next ebin /bst/ bragging accessory, recycling is pretty much the only choice they have

as regrettable as it is, really, are you going to waste time and money individually selling off your terminal fleet every time you upgrade? you couldn't even pay people to take that shit in the '90s and early 2000s, in an age before the widespread availability of Linux or surplus Unix hardware, they were useless to all but hobbyists, and too fresh in peoples' memories to be in demand as nostalgic conversation pieces or cool collectibles

in the end, it was like being faced with a pallet of drab grey dell optiplexes today; too new to be collectable, too old for most peoples' interest, and really your only option would be to let some of your friends pick through and save a couple if you were even allowed to by corporate policy or state law, and then either donate them for a tax write-off or auction them in a lot

>>55115288
my real problem with /mkg/ types is that they really have no respect for the hardware, history, or other collectors, in their quest for a mildly nicer accessory for their hotted up gaming shitbox they drive the separation of complete setups to cater to them

and honestly, sometimes I wonder how many ATs and PS/2s have been lost to the model M crowd buying complete systems and tossing everything but the keyboard out of ignorance

>>55115322
I was just watching some of their videos the other day, that place is fucking neat, might be visiting this year

dot matrix printers are pretty easy to source new/NOS ribbon for since they're still in widespread use

ink/laser are definitely a little more difficult though, there's tons of NOS shit out there still, but as time goes on, you're going to have to figure out how to refill cartridges or they're pretty much non-interactive museum fodder, but who knows, some industrious types may figure out a long-term solution

not any of the people in this thread, even though I hate them with a burning passion (I'm known as Justin around these loser parts) I must admit I put this shit right up on ebay the moment I see it. If I'm ever rich, I'll dedicate a youtube hate channel to old hardware faggots but until then this BS is a goldmine, stick that shit on ebay and slap on "VINTAGE RETRO COOL" and you get instant offers, I'm talking within 30 seconds. Add a made up sop story about how new tech is shit nowadays (don't worry, they aren't smart enough to see that you're selling that too on the same account) as this adds "value" to it

I'm sometimes more or equally confounded by people my age drinking the retrofaggot koolaid and going totally insane and not letting themselves play anything past the snes era, it's disgustingly hilarious to watch but as a typical 4channer I can't help but seek out faggots like that on youtube especially the anti-emulation types who shell out hundreds for obscure japanese carts. Rare as fuck to find some retard store owner who doesn't know what he has, but again, instant money for you. The way I justify this is, I hate these people so completely, that the best revenge is selling them their own garbage at my profit

Bit by bit. A wire weaved through a core was a 1 and a wire skipping a core was a 0. It was programmed in machine code.

NASA hired little old ladies who were experts in knitting to manufacture it. All the engineers needed to do was convert the binary code into a weaving pattern.

your whole post is bullshit, as anyone who's even taken a cursory glance at "VINTAGE RETRO COOL" price gouging listings languishing on ebay (or anyone who has been here longer than a day) could tell you, but here's a PSA from an antique dealer:

you're fucking deluded if you ever think you will make real money from reselling thrift store shit

the retards on the history channel you idolize are rich because they either inherited their vast wealth/stock or have a real job on the side, and no, making half a week's minimum wage pay in profits after sitting for a month on some shitty packard bell an old codger gave you because they just want it the fuck out of their garage is not some incredible deal of a lifetime that will eventually land you between the legs of a plastic colombian supermodel in an NYC penthouse

CP/M based operating system maybe
But S-100 was cumbersome shit that was already on the way out, it was nice for a radio hobbyist in the '80s, not so much for a business in need of cheap, economical fleet boxes. We would probably be using some Commodore or Apple bus.
>>
>>55118700
The last S100 system wasn't phased out completely until 1992.
I think the Chicago Mercantile Exchange had the last one in operation. USAF had a lot of them. They could use many different CPUs including i8080, Z80, Z8000, 8085, 8086, 80186, 80286, 68000, 68010, 68020.
The IEEE-696 standard wasn't retired until '94.

serial to usb.

I found a very old LaCia Tsunami drive (~50MB) from way back when, has my English papers from 4th grade and my KidPix collection. I tried everything to get those files off the drive, but in fit of rage I smashed it. Thing was insanely well built took most of the day with a full length crowbar before it died. Later found out it was a collector item going for ~$300 on ebay, which did not help my mood.

I think it would be fun to find a similar old unit and use it just to mess with people. Goodness knows how fun it has been with the 64kb flash drive I found in Dad's old stuff.

Now I need to find one of those over optimized generating videos to put on it, because 10 minute high def vector video on a few kbs would make it all the more confusing. Those things are crazy as they off load most of the demands to the CPU so the memory foot print can be next to nothing. Wish I remembered what they were called, I know they had coding competitions for them, don't know if that's still a thing now.

Smashing tech with a crowbar.
>>
>>55122920
It made me feel better at the time and I don't really regret it, after all it is not like my fits of rage are unreasonable or irrational. In fact it is the level of rationality that scares people.

I wanted to get my memories out of the drive and I got some, by creating new memories to fill my life. The emotion and sensation of the cold heavy crow bar, the muffled thud of the strikes which changed with the angle of the angle and force of the blows.

Sure I would have liked my old English papers and some extra spending money, but smashing it for the thrill was a reasonable return on my investment given the ever increasing sunk cost of me spending time trying to extract the files.

At some point I reasoned this was a good course of action and took it and it has proven as such. The value of interesting conversion starting materials alone has more then made up for my time spent.

And that is why I am happy with my life, I make it my way.

>>

>>
>>55123305
There's a few "firsts" for the N64 hardware.

It had the first consumer-level GPU with hardware T&L, a programmable vertex shader, (albeit fixed) a pixel shader, hardware support for reflection mapping, and hardware support for anti-aliasing.

>>55123448
I wonder when the PS2 will become 'vintage'?
>>
>>55123340
yes, sad part is they had literally solved their problems only to ignore their proven solutions.

Like the "three handed controller", they had developed the mini joystick/thumb stick which they believed would be a better input device. But were worried it may not go as well as they planned. So they designed a controller that could be used multiple ways, the old way and the new way then mapped the games to respond accordingly so the user could decided as they didn't want to risk everything on some new type of controller. Then years later they shoved motion controls down our throats and told us to like it with little thought to both the user and the game design. It's like they forgot good design ideas they helped pioneer.
>>
>>55123458
>>55123494

Not confusing, just unintuitive. The wiimote is the least accurate controller I've ever used. It's just a total gimmick.
>>
>>55123458
I think what he means it's bothersome to play with, so you just don't.

>>
>>55123477
Slowly getting there I think, people want to buy my modchiped PS2 because of how hard it is to get one now-a-days
>>
>>55123549
I think the real problem was the software, much like the kinetic the games designs were trying to take existing game input models and adapt them to motion rather then design anew holistic motion interface. The low resolution and lag didn't help either, but I can learn to deal with those if they aren't too big and new hardware refinements mitigated them within a few years to what I deem an acceptable level given what they are doing.
>>
>>55123573
Is the modchip how people would run Linux distros on the PS2?

>>55123631
I agree. One of the main reasons new VR is so cool is that people aren't trying to port existing games over to work on it, they are designing entirely new experiences.
>>
>>55123656
You don't need a modchip for that, just someone (with a homebrew launcher or modchip) that make you a memory card with a homebrew launcher on it.

>>
>>55123656
The thing with VR that will make it struggle a lot is people are trying to copy reality, not make a new virtual one. Until we get direct brain jacks we aren't going to trick the brain well enough for that, but we can train the brain to operate in a new ways.

Much like learning to swim is very different from walking, but offers a number of new options we can use. But that learning part is another barrier.

I think in 3d all the time it gets very complicated and messy. Having a 3d file map would help organize the data in new ways to open new options.

It's really just new UI features, like how control+V changed the world despite that there were a number of other ways to copy data long before that basic command happened.

... Rambling continues to drift in a manner not worth typing

Every single one of these retrofags need to kill themselves. It would make the world a better place for everyone who actually intends to use the machine instead of pretentiously wearing the fact that they own them as a badge of honour, while the machine itself is locked up in some closet and never ever used.

You know there are other kinds of entertainment then your HTML5 browser and youtube.
But yeah, I have been shitposting with my 486, Amiga and Quadra.
But talking about old XT's, AT's and clones like that are great for BBS'es, IRC, old DOS games, nothing beats a genuine monochrome monitor. Oh and the demoscene and (again)games, specially on old Amigas.
Don't forget tracker music and MIDI's, specially on real hardware synths.

I mostly like to tinker with old hardware, upgrades, mods and programming in assembly!

>>

>>
>>55127960
Point was entertainment, not work related and as you started talking about horses, it would be like getting a ATV (because it's newer, faster, takes less care) to race on the field when you actually enjoy riding horses on it.
>>
>>55128036
>horses being the older alternative as you mentioned
>>
>>55128036
It's not a valid analogy because these are very different forms of entertainment (horses and ATVs), instead of the older and obsolete version of the same thing (horses and any modern commuting alternative).
>>
>>55128092
That's exactly what you fail to see, nothing is obsolete (by definition) if you have a use for it.
>>
>>55128092
>>55128164
To add to it, you are comparing as an analogy the difference between horses being use for commuting instead a leisure time activity.
>>
>>55127286
other than games, it still does the same business workhorse/data processing stuff people bought it for in the '80s; spreadsheets, word processing, small databases, remote access, and the whole ton of other software out there for PCs, whatever you wanted, chances are someone somewhere had already made it for a PC

though really, DOS systems in the home are more a for-fun purchase than a truly productive purchase nowadays, it's fun making them do useful shit other than games, but if I had to be marooned on a desert island with some mothballed hardware I would go for another platform

the comparison between new and old in computing is very, very far from "the same thing", even among PCs, the hardware behaves differently, it looks different, it runs different software

>>
>>55128164
Of course. That's why people still use them, just not like they used (or maybe I should say "seen") them when they were new.

>>55128183
That's a detail that takes nothing from my point. If you want, we can find an equal analogy about leisure activities, like playing soccer today with an inflated pig bladder instead of a proper modern ball (at the time it was the best they had and would have probably used a modern one if they could, and if someone plays with them now it's because it's a vintage novelty).

>>55128254
>tech isn't all about benchmark scores and consuming youtube videos all day, fun shit doesn't stop being fun because the number on your calendar is bigger
I'm not saying it's not fun. I'm saying that the statement in >>55127713 (nothing's changed) is untrue.

Since highschool I started to collect people's old computers.

I know literally nothing about them. People just knew I wanted that shit and gave it to me. Almost all of them are from the 80s. Some work, most don't. Usually when they don't work it's a simple power supply or harddrive issue. Some are from the library, schools , university and some were personal.

I seriously have about 40 or computers in my storage room. Whenever I add a new one I do a simple check for bugs or mice that might have gotten in so they are still in good condition.

For the longest time I honestly thought they were completely valueless and trash to everyone. I just think they look neat.

>55115173
Computers are absolutely worthless because they serve no purpose AT ALL once new models come out. They also didn't become mainstream until the 90s. So no one had any sort of emotional connection to them.

Meaning, they all got tossed our and destroyed.

Just look at fucking n64s and their games. Even as little as 5 years ago you could get a game like Mario 64 or Smash Bros Melee for $5. Now because the kids that grew up with that shit are out of college and working REAL jobs and careers and settling down they want to own the shit they did as kids.

That and internet reselling becoming common place jacked the prices right the fuck up.
>>
>>55117948
>>55117836
You cannot argue with these people. It's literally impossible. They value personal profit over everything else.

The more you call a scalper shitty the better they feel about themselves. They value easy money of everything else. To them "That's just how the world works and I am AMAZING because I AM THE ONLY PERSON TO REALIZE IT"

this is the half /v/ in him left mixing with the shit nostalgia making a weird sandwich of only having recently played a 10 year old console just now and saying it's shit. Doesn't matter what it is, doesn't matter if it's technology or not - IT'S TOO NEW.

>Remember when nintendo was good
as always you are quantum stuck in this psuedo b.s. lie past in which you won't let yourself go back and play your old memorial games and then start sentences with "Remember when".

I don't think I've ever read any sentence that started with "Remember when" that couldn't be replaced with "I'm lying to myself about". Again the retro "tech" version of this is holding onto dead hardware so you can pine for how good it would be if it would just turn on, and never let it be turned on. That's what I call the "dead electronics plastic club".

Anyway can I interest anyone in this really old keyboard I just found in my attic? It doesn't and hasn't worked for 40 years but let me tell you, it would be so cool if it did.... $89.99 OBO
