>>
>>55114980
Yup that's what I'm doing. It works very good in terms of performance, but there seems to be some problems resetting the amd card after the windows vm shuts down, so i essentially either have to keep it on all the time or reboot my computer every time i want to boot it again.
This might be a problem with this card though, I don't know. It also crashes libvirt so i suggest you don't do important things while playing with passthrough.
>>
>>55115422
damn the crashing sucks, I have a 270x I was going to try to pass through some day
but every time I look at the KVM wiki's on configuring that, I just reboot into my gaymen OS
and run it native.

I respectfully disagree.
>>
>>55115449
It's quite painful to set up i will admit, I was ripping my hair out for a night until I got it working.
the problem is that there are a lot of OS specific things in most documentation on how to do it. OS specific as in it differs from distro to distro.
I did it because I rarely play windows games and I just want to be able to do it those few times I do. and leaving all my things behind complicates things a lot. just my personal experience. i leave my computer on for days, weeks, months at a time if i have no reason to reboot so sometimes there is a ton of half finished stuff going on.

I think there are people who know technology on Windows, they just know a different area than most Linux users.
The guys shilling for windows or os x for various reasons obviously don't know shit, though. You use the tool that performs the job the best in any situation.
Windows is usually better in an office environment, Linux is usually better for advanced programming and servers, OS X is usually better for enjoying cinnamon latte vegan gluten free starbucks coffee.

all right, two questions
in what situation is this beneficial as opposed to having Linux servers with power and Windows clients (as an example)?

The only reason it isn't accepted by RMS is because they have the option of non-free repos. Debian is as free as it gets.
It can be bleeding edge with Sid if you're a madman, or up to date with Testing.
Ubuntu is so popular right now, that it's better to chose the mother of all Debian based distros for shit like gaymes.
Not really a reason, but their logo is one of the best.

Ok, I concede. That's actually reassuring. I thought about using Debian on a server, but its official kernel does not support Maxwell out of the box.

In my experience, people using years-old packages run into more problems than people using fully patched and up-to-date software.

The amount of bug reports we get due to random crap breaking in people's 2-year old ffmpeg and 1-year old mpv versions is astonishing. Software isn't designed to bit rot.
