IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Hi T60 user. I'm using lubuntu right now with the HDD that came with my T60 and it boots up really fast. The WM is very responsive and quick because LXDE uses a lot from OpenBox.

Honestly you don't need a good laptop "for university." All you're going to use it for is taking notes, writing papers, browsing the web. If you need to use intensive software or want to game you should build a desktop.
>>
Thinkpad...replacement power supply was a bitch to find. Still great value, im good with it.

how the fuck are you supposed to remove these obnoxious stickers jesus christ
>>
>>55100669
Should I tone it down from a t460 to a t450? or are you thinking even lower?
>>
>>55100782
I'm using a T60 and going to college carrying that around. You can think way lower... People overestimate how much power they need for something so simple. What are you taking? If you're doing anything like architecture, EE, or math you will will have a computer lab capable of running MatLAB and CAD software.
>>
>>55100782
Well it's up to you. I used a t61 for uni for years and recently "upgraded" to a t420. It's always been more than sufficient for anything I would want to do on a laptop.

Currently using w520 with arch linux. Why does my brightness up hotkey register twice while brightness down works normally.. anyone lese have this problem?
>>
So, im panning to get a thinkpad but my budget is somewhat limited if we leave aside other things.

How much a new battery (not chinese) should cost and how i know its the real deal? im looking for great battery life but most sellers over here advertise batteries that last 2.5 hours or less.

If the thinkpad i buy uses 2.5" 9mm what i have to do to fit a 7mm SSD on it? nothing?
Im planning to put a cheap ADATA SSD on it or a 850 EVO if everything goes right.

Is it worth it to spend $150 more on a T420/X220 instead a T400/X200 if all im going to do is Netbeans and MSOffice?
>>
>>55100782
I use the 450s and it's perfect for me with the 9 cell that's detachable. The 460s can't do that any more.

Don't get anything older than 450s though. The 440s has no buttons at the touchpad and the older ones make you look autistic.
>>
>>55101722
are you using the 6 cell or 9 cell battery?
>>
>>55101317

If you go to a school that was built before electrification was widespread, good luck finding an outlet in the classroom you can use, or in the hallway for that matter.
>>
>>55101394

Lubuntu would probably suit it better.

Ubuntu has all the bells and whistles and isn't well suited for older machines if you're using the default desktop (which, if you know nothing about Linux, you will be). Lubuntu uses a lightweight desktop and is tuned for older hardware.

You can run the same software on both.

I'm thinking it could be the cable to the power button. For some reason, on the X250 Lenovo decided to daisy-chain the power button cable from the webcam cable. Coincidentally, this means the X250 is unable to boot without the webcam being functional. I just don't want to drop the money into repairing this thing, because this isn't even the first time I've had problems with it. I'm almost to the point of just giving up, selling it for parts and buying something else.

I've got a T410 and it's been perfect until now. I'm having this weird problem when scrolling with the touchpad edges: it jumps about. As in, I go to scroll down a webpage and it jumps up before it starts scrolling down, it's maddening.

It only seems to happen after I've clicked with one of the mouse buttons above the touchpad, and doesn't happen if I use the ones below it (?!) or click by tapping the touchpad.

I'm pretty sure it's not a software problem, now, because I've tried multiple browsers / etc, but I suppose it still might be? I'm running Xubuntu but it happens in whatever distro I boot up live.

Don't know what to do here, I've searched online and can't find anyone with the same problem. I suppose I could just stop using the upper buttons, but it's annoying me nonetheless. Any suggestions?

you'd want at minimum at 1440p screen, or ideally a 1800p screen

When I started first year university in 2009, I took my dad's T40p, which was almost six years old at the time. Aside from not being able to play TF2 with my floormates, it performed very well, never skipped a beat. With a new battery it was even decently close to modern laptops in terms of battery life. I imagine a T60 would have similar functionality in today's world (battery life being the one exception). Still didn't stop me from buying a T400 for second year because I needed to watch Chinese cartoons.

>>55103259
I have Ubuntu on a T400 and it just absolutely flies, even without an SSD. A W520 would have enough power to run just about any OS you want.

Even if it did, it would never fit. The power limit is actually the least of your concerns with the Advanced Dock. The space is extremely cramped, with maybe half an inch of vertical space above the surface of the PCB and one inch of horizontal space past the end of the PCI-E connector. The R7 240's tiny little heatsink barely manages to fit, all the 7770s I see on ebay have big-ass coolers that don't stand a chance.

Best to wait and see what the new cards have to offer for the low end before buying anything, though. The die shrink ought to give us some really solid options, provided manufacturers make the cards small enough.

Got a X220 the other day, looking at upgrades I can do.

Already have a Samsung 850 EVO I'll be throwing in as my main system drive, with Kubuntu and Win10 in dual boot. I'll also be grabbing a mSATA version for shared storage between the two systems. Was just going to format it in NTFS, but would I be better off with EXT4 and just installing a driver in Windows?

The battery has seen better days (only lasts about an hour off the wall) so what's the best option to get a new one? Does anybody sell modded 9 cell ones with the Panasonic 3400mah cells in them? I doubt they do but can't hurt to ask.

The other thing is the wireless card - both work and home networks are 802.11ac and MIMO compatible, so is it worth replacing the card with something else for more speed/better Linux compatibility?

Also already have some IPS panels on the way from a seller in the US. 15% off the item along with a $85 for $100 Groupon voucher, and going halves with a mate on shipping halved the shipping price too. The stock panel is shite, I can see why people do the swap.
>>
>>55112831

I think if you upgrade to 10 and retrieve your key that'd work, wouldn't it?

Otherwise just install Win7+Microsoft Toolkit+CLUpdater to clean install Windows 10.

If anyone cares I got the X200. Portability seemed better since this is basically just a you for me to mess around with Linux distros and do anki reps in coffee shops.

Will finding docks get harder over time? I have a t420 and I see some that come with the adapter for $25. I have nothing for it right now but in the foreseeable future I see it being extremely handy. Should I just grab one now/soon?
>>
Does the X220 normally have a really cheap feeling keyboard? Compared to the T420.
>>
>>55115822
There's three different manufacturers for Thinkpad keyboards, so that could be what you're noticing. There is also something of a weakpoint in the X220 at the bottom-left corner that results in a less solid feeling in that area compared to other models, even if you use the same exact keyboard.
>>
>>55115875
Yeah, I definitely notice the weak point there. I think I could tolerate it, but the keys actually seem fucked on it too. They feel nothing like any of the other keys on the board.
>>
>>55115908
The keys in the bottom left corner, I mean. Control and function mostly. Shift a little bit too. Is that a normal thing as well?
>>
>>55115908
>>55115925
I've heard the effect can be lessened if you have something in the Expresscard slot, but never bothered trying it myself.

>>
It's too bad no 12.5" 1600x900 panels exist to put in an x220, 1920x1080 at that diagonal size is just too fuckin' small and I have decent vision.

I see that Panasonic made some "Let's Note" models years ago that had 12.1" 1600x900 panels (from AUO and LG) and I could probably retrofit one of those into an x220 with some work, found some info at the ThinkPads.com forums about it.

Dammit, no 12.5" 1440x900 goodness either, shit fuck piss.
>>
Just completed a mobo swap in my T60 to get the X1400. Add in the extra gig of RAM and the new OEM 9 cell and we're cookin.
Just need to look into better wireless cards and I'll have maxed out the 14.1" I think unless I can find a good T7600.

I just bought a refurbished W520, but its making a clicking sound. I think it is coming from the left side of the trackpad. Is this bad in any way? I can ignore it, i just want to know if it is damaging at all?

>>
>>55115239
Lenovo usually lets you press enter to interrupt startup and gives you options like BIOS and other stuff. You want the boot options. It should list both drives in that menu and just pick the HDD.

There may be other buttons, so just read what pops up when you turn on your PC, and look for boot options specifically.

The 3rd Gen 45nm ones will easily handle a 1080p monitor hooked to it, play 720p on YT no problem, 1080p will push the cpu, it mght drop a frame or two on lower end core 2 duos, but is watchable. 60fps will not happen sadly, but for the sub $100 price you can buy a Penryn for, it's really good. i'd also suggest getting a thinkpad with dedicated graphics along with that core 2 Duo, then you can handle 1080p playback without problems.

Someone should get around to adding the Alienware panel swap info to this page, it only mentions the X1 Carbon panel swap, but the Alienware panel seems to be the better option because the ribbon cable doesn't need any fucking with since it's already in a good spot

Drivers only for all the hardware, then the Lenovo Power Manager, that's about all I'd install. Everything else is actually bloat but the Power Manager is a major thing on a ThinkPad.

Protip: the Power Manager won't install on a Windows 10 installation by default (for those that wish to use Windows 10, that is, heaven help you). The setup.exe file is blocked by Windows 10 natively so, right-click on the setup.exe file, copy it, paste the copy immediately in the same folder, run the copy of setup.exe, voila, it installs and works just fine.

Stupid bullshit from Microsoft, the Power Manager has zero issues running on Windows 10, it's just getting it installed that's a problem for some people.

Congrats, but realize that ThinkPads aren't the only possible option, Dell Latitudes and HP EliteBooks are nice options as well. I personally prefer Latitudes myself but I have owned (and currently own) many ThinkPads over the decades all the way from the first one ever released to still having two near-mint ThinkPad 701c Butterfly models as well.

It's just that after Lenovo stepped in I don't find them all that appealing anymore. I have a T430 (pawn shop $120 special steal) but I'm considering dumping it to get another Latitude, actually.

But the T520 is a great machine so take care of it and it'll take care of you.

Thanks anon. What about the Access Connections thing?

I won't install W10 because it looks like dogshit, wanted to use Debian but i need windows software.
>>
>>55119863

I have a Latitude E6400 (Core 2 Duo P8700) and a Latitude E6220 (Core i5-2520m) and I agree with that post, word for word.

They both still work great, have zero issues, get the job done just fine, and I have no reason to really want more for the time being.

Sure I'd love to have a Xeon powered Dell Precision right now but that's just not going to happen so, I'm good.
>>
>>55127985

Bleh, the Windows network manager works just fucking fine. Don't add completely unnecessary shit for no reason, Access Connections doesn't improve the network connections in any respect whatsoever since it just uses the Windows network routines anyway, it's just another GUI on top of the GUI that already exists.

But it's up to you, install it, check it out, when you realize it's just duplicating functionality that already exists in Windows you'll probably decide to get rid of it so, maybe avoid it altogether.

The Power Manager and its ability to modify the power profiles is of utmost importance for a ThinkPad (running Windows, of course). Using that properly and creating custom profiles for yourself can literally gain you hours of extra battery life depending on your patterns of usage.

I know it isn't /tpg/ but does anyone have any experience with the thinkpad x1 yoga? Considering it for next semester. Using a SP3 now for school.

Would a t460p be good for electrical engineering at college? I will also have a desktop, but I'd like to have a laptop that I can travel with for the next couple of years

How many of you actually go beyond 128gb of data?

I just bought a 128gb ssd and I'm not sure whether or not to return it and get a 240-256 for like 1.7x the cost.

I'll be using my T430s as a Linux shitposting and rice machine, running Ubuntu and with windows in a VM to run office, Photoshop and a couple of other bits....

All my media will be on my microserver at home.

Anyone use a ultrabay battery on the t420s?
What kind of battery life do you get on it, combined with the 6 cell?

Can someone explain the difference between the Dell E6420 and the E6320? Why is the smaller screen size laptop more expensive on the guide? I am between these two in my area, each at $150. Same specs, just different screen sizes from what I see. Pls help.
>>
>>55131479
Both aren't thinkpads
>>
>>55131490
I already have a couple Thinkpads, but the prices keep going up on my Craigslist (People asking over $100 for a T41, for example). Dells aren't as expensive in my area for some reason, so I figured my next upgrade would be there. So help me figure out what justifies the E6320 being more expensive on avereage than the E6420, even the the 64 has a bigger screen (15 inch compared to 13).
>>
>>55131490
Latitudes are friends here. You stop that.

>>55131479
13-inch model most likely has inferior cooling and possibly a soldered CPU, but that's pure speculation on my part, I've never used either model or any Latitude at all. This is the main downside to Thinkpad alternatives, they don't have the massive knowledge base that comes with the cult.

so i got a x200 which i really am loving. Theres one problem though, i'm running ubuntu for now and it only shows some of the battery capacity. the battery is the kind that sticks out the back. ubuntu shows 4 hours of battery life but then gets stuck at 7% for about another hour. How do i get it to show the right percentage and battery time?

it says to install some kernel modules, thanks a lot i think i could follow a tutorial from here on. I kinda suspected it was a kernel thing
>>
>>55132817
I had the same thing but with a T420 and Windows 7.

I fixed it by running the calibration tool from lenovo power manager.
>>
I got an old Ideapad Y550p. It won't turn on however.

A quick look at the parts make it seems like it's relatively intact, I think the power cord must be dead. There are some small cracks in the case however.

Should I take it into the shop and see if it's salvageable, or should I just join the Thinkpad meme instead? I obviously won't repair it if it costs above 100 to fix.
>>
how much should I be paying for a x220 with i5, 8gb of ram, 320gb hdd, and an ips display?

>>55132893
There are optional tlp packages for the X200 you should consider installing. These could fix your problem.

There are some gimmicky sites online that pay for broke shit. THe ones i went through would only give you like $40 though for that laptop.
>>
>>55133071
Better than nothing. I have another broke laptop lying around as well so that's about 80 bucks right there.
>>
>>55132682

My T420 has a bios option to switch these. Maybe look on your bios.
>>

Yeah, if they worked, i would say to try and sell them as minecraft machines to some broke kid on craigslist.

Good luck anon.

Would having my RAM to 1866Mhz lessen my battery life?
>>
>>55133434
Well nothing out of the ordinary really but i'm from Chile.

Managed to snag a t61 for $20k clp (29 usd or so) and Mercadopago handles it, you buy and they pay the seller after receiving the item.

What i can't understand is why every fucking laptop here has the touchpad fucked up.
>>
>>55133462
Only by a very little amount, if your thinkpad will even do 1866mhz.

Yeah, while browsing the mexico version i noticed that too.

How expensive would be to change the touchpad? Its not like i will use it but i would like it to look clean if i get a worn one.
>>
>>55133581
I can't buy from ebay or amazon because i live in this shithole so i just look for parts on AliExpress, try looking for a touchpad for the model that you're interested in or the FRU.

I also got a spare battery coming from there, can't wait for the housefire.

Could I just reinstall Win 7 into the SSD?? if so, how?? dont got no disk.

hi, im a newfag to thinkpads, what is a good thinkpad to begin with?
>>
>>55134405
Then you wont experience much battery life loss, and you'll gain some speed.
>>
>>55134406
Get a T400 if you're needs aren't very great, but get a T420 if you want a main machine.
>>
>>55134199
The easiest thing for you to do is to create a bootable flash drive and then just reinstall windows on your SSD

T420/X220 for a main computer.

You're clearly doing something horribly wrong. Google if you can't figure out how to clone a drive correctly.
