Don't worry :). I do some Python and Android (Android Studio) development. But the main "heavy" stuff that I'll actually do is to run some Network VM-Software like GNS3. I do run always 2-3 (sometimes 4 VMs) when I do my networking stuff. Each vm gets about 500 Mhz - 1Ghz. I don't game but i use a 3440x1440 display over the DP Port @ 60HZ.

But I suggest you check the following:

Google which one handles parallel computing better if that is something you need to a great extent, which it seems to me that you do

Google which one draws more power if you need the battery ALOT and think it may make a sign difference

Google which one is better for compiling (lol is that a thing to check for?) and for interpreting depending on which languages you'll be using

I have a desktop but use it just for gaming. I had mac Macbook pro with 16GB ram and i7HQ and it handelt all the stuff that i did easily. The p50 is a attractive device but has dual graphics. Don't know how linux is going to handle it...
