Go to distro watch and try all the distros on the rankings list out in a vm until you found the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice

You seem new here, you'll mostly get "Gentoo" for every distro question you have.

I like Linux Mint with Cinnamon. It just werks. Looks pretty nice too with a good theme.

Apps or app icons? The icon theme I'm using is Antu. The stuff on my taskbar is just some stuff I use on a daily basis.
