Why is Australian internet so expensive?

Probably because they know they've got us by the dangly bits and can charge whatever they want and we have no alternative.

Also because there is a LOT of dead space between our major population centres and it would cost a fuckton to lay stuff like fibre all along there.

Partly because we have a low population density and partly because of the privatisation of Telecom.

Telecom pre-telstra was actually pretty good at maintaining their shit, kept stuff up to date and broke even money wise.
Once they went private their primary goal went from "providing telecoms services" (by charter) to "make money".
There were two ways they could achieve that. Increase cost to consumer or reduce services. They did both to the biggest extent allowed by law.

The copper that we have in most places hasn't been maintained since privatisation. Where maintenance has been done, it's been done on the cheap (corrosive-to-copper sealants, plastic bags, etc).

The private sector are fucking hopeless at this sort of shit unless you find some cherry picked market where 90% of the population lives in a square kilometre.
In fact, the HFC network that exists in some tiny percentage of the population today is the private sector's attempt at the NBN. They just can't see the money in it.

I wouldn't be against it, but it's probably a little late for that now. The consumer facing infrastructure we'd be buying back wouldn't be worth the clingwrap holding it together, and the company is a shadow of its former self.

The best bet we have at the moment is a proper FTTP NBN plan.
