It's not only intel, amd have something similar.
>>
>>55064574
Same as any other PC build.....

Completely depends on what you have for a budget/what you need it to do....

The problem with 2011 socket now a days is there are way more cpus then there are mobos for them... so the price of the 5 year old motherboards have shot up to $200-$400.

if you are dead set on that cpu you basically have to just google every day until you get lucky, or pay 250% markup
>>
sandy and ivy bridge i5s and i7s are cheaper and would perfrom 10x better in games
>>
>>55064617
I could "build" a system with that CPU for less than $400.
>>

>>55064673
Actually I just calculated a real build cost for using a e5-2670 v1 (and a little bit of ingenuity) and the overall price is about $338.
>>
>>55064933
Scratch that. I did not include a GPU into my build. You could add something for about $60, but I would advise against it in favor of the other method.

>>
>>55063376

>>
>>55065018
The CPU is still over $200. The h81 motheboards are pretty cheap at around $40, but where is the rest of the system to come in at $290?

I don't see any prebuilts using this CPU to use as a foundation. Do you plan on getting a generic ATX box with PSU built in for about $50? Not saying this is impossible, but I want to know if that's the direction you're going. And what about RAM and GPU?
>>
>>55064003
$400-800 depending on who's buying it. I'd sell it starting at $550 or something like that. That'll get you a decent amount of money to start with. Buy a barebones Dell T5600 or T7600 on ebay and get 2 of those processors (or just get one of the Dells with the processors preinstalled if it's cheaper, but I doubt it will be).
>>
>>55063322
>buy OK cpu now
>buy motherboard for $100
vs
>buy great cpu now
>buy even better cpu later
>>
Okay, whatever. Fuck it.

Here's the cheapest way to use an e5-2670. As far as I can tell.

You will want to look for one of these three machines which all have motherboards with socket 2011 (v1).

>HP Z420
>Dell Precision T3600
>Lenovo Thinkstation D30

The Z420 is usually the cheapest of the group. You could buy this one for instance:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Z420-Workstation-Xeon-E5-1603-2-8GHz-8G-DDR3-ECC-250GB-Win-ATI-FirePro-V4800-/381666327620?hash=item58dd15fc44:g:e8IAAOSwvU5XNQBa

Now, the e5-1603 is a pretty good CPU already, so you -really- need to upgrade it unless you just want to.

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+E5-1603+v3+%40+2.80GHz&id=2457

Look closely at the TDP. 140 watts. That means the heatsink on there will be pretty nice, and you can look for more powerful CPUs for the socket and the cooler will not need to be upgraded. The e5-2670 has only a 115w TDP so it will be completely fine to swap out.

e5-2670 costs about $50 shipped on ebay and comes with thermal past.

Do the CPU swap and...well, that's it. You're done. You now have a small and very capable PC for around $400.

That ATI FirePro V4800 GPU is pretty modest and will not play any of the new games, but it's worth about $30. Sell it and put the money towards a Radeon HD 7850 that can play modern games, and which can go for around the same price or a little more ($10-15) on ebay if you buy it through an auction. Or upgrade to a RX 480 if you want something a lot more powerful.
>>
>>55065181
>or just get one of the Dells with the processors preinstalled if it's cheaper, but I doubt it will be)

They were selling the dual CPU e5-2670 Precisions for less than $600 last week, but this week the price has been jacked up over $1000. I guess the sellers caught on.
>>
>>55065181
Hmmm... what's the chance a 212 EVO will fit a T5600?
>>
>>55065156
I'm just a talking for my personal case because I already have a full fx 8320 system that i can rip the motherboard out of
>>
>>55063322
>>55063376

It's a really good CPU for highly threaded workloads, but as usual it's behind on single-thread performance (not that it really matters much).

Wait for Zen. They're a 40% performance increase.
>>
>>55065006
>>55064933
sure 60 for the cpu 200 for the mobo 20$ for a case with included psu and 2gb ddr3 ram

Hardly a real build, unless where you live they just happen to have a bountiful supply of 2011 boards that arent advertised online for anything less then $300 else theyd be bought instantly
>>
>>55065400
You could maybe get away with buying

>z420 motherboard ($150)
>e5-2670 ($50)
>hp cpu cooler ($40)
>hp PSU adapter ($10)

BUT I don't now if the z420 motherboard will mount in your case. It may require tapping a few holes in your case, and that will cost another $10. And there may be other unforseen issues.

But still, the e5-2670 is quite powerful and may be worth it.

You could maybe get away with a cheaper CPU cooler. Might have some errors on startup that require an F1 press to get past.
>>
>>55065390
pretty likely desu, but if you get T5600 with heatsinks included they'll be more than enough. Up to you, you aren't going to be overclocking the CPU(s) obviously and precision are near silent stock. My T7500 with dual X5690s is quiet as fuck, as in quieter than my friend's mini-itx build.
>>
>>55065376
Yeah I just checked myself and saw the same thing... I mean installing them yourself isn't too hard.
>>
>>55065544
Stock 2P seems to start at ~$1k vs $420. Stock heat sink is $140. So 1P base with a $60 processor and a 212 EVO would look to be the way to go if it fits.
>>
>>55065635

Throw another E5 2660 in there and call it a day or upgrade to dual E5 2670 and enjoy the extra single threaded performance. You can build this system cheap if you hunt for low prices on the parts, I promise you.
>>
>>55063407
Just wait for the new chips.
>>
>>55063970
What do they measure in? Kelvin?
>>
Ugh, why did the RAM have to be registered? I have 16GB ECC RAM I'm not using, but I'm almost certain it's unbuffered.
>>
>>55065390
It won't. Dell has a proprietary fan connector. The power connector will probably have to be shaved down a bit, and it will go on, but you will BIOS errors.

Probably will not affect performance, but it's annoying.

Why not just use one of Dell's coolers?
>>
>>55065419
You can't just go with any old case on these type of motherboards. They are not ATX, and they use proprietary power connectors. You have be careful with your selections and know which adapter to buy for the PSU, if you can buy one at all.
>>
>>55065880
Or you can get Dell 5 pin to 4 pin pwm cables for pretty cheap.

I might bag an FX 8350 when they hit the $100 mark or maybe get an Phenom II X6 1090T from e-bay. I've got a Phenom II x4 955 right now that works great. I don't really stress it much. My only multi-core apps other than windows 7 is Photoshop CS2 and maybe firefox. Most of my games are all older titles that use a single core. Media encoding work gets dumped to a dedicated spare computer.
>>
>>55065898
thats why you buy the special case/psu together
>>
>>55065880
I have a 212 EVO sitting here. I don't have the money for a $140 heat sink.
I wouldn't have any money to put into this besides what I could sell the i7 3770/7870 for.
>>
>>55065950
If your thinking of getting either, get the 8320e, its higher binned and allows higher overclocks in general
>>
>>55065914
I suppose it is worth trying. But remember the Dell, HP, and Lenovo and other server motherboards do not allow overclocking. Unless you are building from a barebones chassis there is no need to upgrade the fan (and the OEM fans are pretty good to begin with).

From my research the barebones chassis's are not the best for price/performance. I know there is a gut instinct to always build yourself over buying a prebuilt, but the market has shifted and it may no longer be the best method.

>>
>>55066053

>>
>>55065635
>Stock heat sink is $140.

I think you can do better than that. Right here it is $73 shipped.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Precision-T5600-2-20GHz-8C-E5-2660-8GB-RAM-500GB-HDD-Win7Pro-/182165107287?hash=item2a69e2f257:g:B2IAAOSw9eVXWY3l

Here's a prebuilt that has everything you need excluding a good GPU and an SSD if you want one. You could upgrade to that $50 E5 2670, which I would advise doing because 2.2ghz is low even for an 8 core.
>>
>>55066085
>>55066089
Well thank you for this info. Will look into getting one then. Doing a budget build to game on currently.
>>
>>55066139

>>
>>55066139
God damnit. I missed out on the first round of these systems when they came up about 10 days ago and you could buy one with the two e5-2670s already installed and 16gb of RAM for less than $600.

Not next time. I am getting one of those suckers. I already have a HP z800 with 2x x5650 and 12gb of memory. I don't really have a reason to upgrade but I want that raw CPU power.
>>

>>
>>55066098

this was a budget CPU 4 years ago. Intel has released new CPUs every year since then each with a 10% performance increase

an i5-6600k outperforms the 8350 by 20-30% in multithreaded applications and by 100% or more in single threaded

It's not like they can't, it's that they don't want to. It's just isn't worth their time to invest in for example 8 core support, when the majorety of the population is running quad or even dual cores.

Single core performance is where it's at and it's gonna stay like that until AMD gets it's shit together and improves theirs.

Its nice, but why not a 7860K?

I mean if you're talking strictly for gaming, I agree. But then again being able to bloat the fuck out of your OS and still have everything run fine is nice... It's not like the 8 core would hold the system back in realistic gaming scenarios due to it's lower clocks and don't forget 8 cores have a wider range from base to turbo boost clock.

I guess I give advice based on what I would use my system for, which is everything.

It is good that you give advice for all-purpose use. Versatility is always good.

>7860K

Thanks.
>>

I have the 750k which is essentially that without the onboard vidya. Its ok but It is a bottleneck in the latest games,

I didn't really notice until I tried a 970 in it, I did some benches and was getting consistently much lower firestrike/other scores/fps in games then other systems with the same gpu but better cpu.

Ended up selling the 970 and just using a 7870le

Either way, Use an SSD, and don't expect miracles

Thanks. I've yet to find a scenario that a decent/spec'd out older workstation won't perform at least adequately in.

Why?
>>
>>55067874
Also, if you're planning on getting a third party cooler, the 7890K comes with the wraith cooler, and only costs ~$30 more (equal cost to 7870K). It's about the same costs as the 7860K + 212.
It doesn't cool quite as well as the hyper 212, but the 7890K is better binned, so you don't need to OC much.

How is the noise of all those hard drives running at once?
>>
>>55067966
I have my computer sitting about 2.5ft away from me on my desk and I can't say I ever really hear any hard drive noise at all. I have so much RAM that Windows basically caches everything I use frequently into my RAM so I'm not really hammering my on my HDDS too much besides when I start up the computer. I leave it on 24/7 anyways. Like I said, precisions are surprisingly well constructed and quiet.
>>
>>55068024
If you don't get the caching thing look up superfetch for Windows.

Isn't the point of Vulkan to address problems like this?
>>
>>55071547
not him but do you seriously think it ill magically utilize all cores.
We will see small improvements nothing more for now.
>>
>>55071590
Well, I sort of do expect to see major improvements in the next generation of game engines. So.. probably 2 to 3 years from now.
