It's easier for Microsoft to monetize because of telemetry and advertising.

It's better to migrate users to an operating system with forced software updates to improve their security reputation.

It makes software more standardized for developers.

Don't agree with their decisions personally but those are the likely justifications.
>>
>>55059432

I agree but i also think Microsoft wants to move towards providing services like Google and move away from being a software company.

More people that could buy shit in store.
Less maintenance burden on older versions if people move over from them.
Developers hate fragmented userbase and old versions sticking around (like XP, which 7 is probably going to be a repeat of).
>>

Yes. Expect tracking and ads to increase after the free upgrade offer expires

They are obliged to support windblows 7 until 2022. Not everyone on this planet is going to make the transition and while they might still benefit from many people switching, they sure are not gaining enough to justify them pushing windblows 10 this hard.
>>
>>55059211

Because they are company that makes and sell OS, among other things, what do you think?

Main answer is that MS wants to be Apple 2.0. Almost everything they did to Windows lately had Apple approach in mind, they want a slice from that big cake.

They copied the solution to closing suport for older versions by offering free upgrade too. They copied idea of Windows Store as well, poorly.

One of the selling points of Windows are games, so they try to push their Directx 12, similar to how they tried to persuade people to upgrade to Vista, then 7 and later to 8.1, by Dx 10/11. They would love to make people buy games via Windows Store instead of, for example, Steam, but clearly have no real idea about how to do it. So far they tried to make some PC versions of games Windows 10 only, like Tomb Raider or Quantum Break, only to flop hard.

MS suffer from fragmented market, there are people still using XP for example..

You cant, stop using this simplification, everybody will laugh you off.

What you CAN do is limit it up to containing only machine and system ID and device class, nothing more. HOWEVER, only on Enterprise/Edu, oficially. I didnt test if this works under Pro with just registry editing.

MS own articles says so:

>>55062180

Yes, because MS wants your data. It is still possible to turn it off under all Versions of Win 10, even Pro and Home.

The only thing you have to do is edit the registry, a thing "normal" Windows User don't even think about.

But it is possible and it is a simple Registry Edit.

Ads, tracking, profiling.
Imagine you have to track someone using cookies, fingerprints and shit. It's hard.

Imagine if you have to pay a small amount of money to Microsoft, and get all the data and profile of a person.

In the world of advertising this is priceless.
MS can also put ads in Start, in lock screen, in desktop, in apps, anywhere.
Also, apps generate $$$.

I would be happy to use 10 by the way, but they don't even sell the Enterprise version to a few people company.

Just get server when it comes out. It's bound to be de-botnetted because no enterpruse in their right mind would deploy it otherwise.

The fact that it takes so long for them to even roll out server is proof that win10 was released as half baked beta.

Putting almost everyone on the same OS will ensure Microshit they have full access to most computers.

Then with that access, they will be tracking you to the amount of photos you've viewed and for how long.
Microsoft can give this information about mass interest to ad companies for great deals of money.

Also, Microshit wants to put everyone on the same OS so they can maintain 1 OS, instead of 4.
>>
MS is desperately pushing their vision of unifying mobile with desktop PCs/notebooks. Windows 10 is part of that vision, and MS knows how competitive the mobile market is so they want to give people a reason to go to Windows Phones.

MS is a company full of yes men and big on corporate hierarchy, so when the people high up have an idea like this nobody can argue with it. You can see MS's corporate culture embodied in Windows 10 itself. The inconsistent UI, the poor concepts that you can tell the engineers were desperate to "just make it work" so management would shut up about it, etc.

If MS is smart, they'll admit that the whole "one platform" vision was a mistake. They'll do the same thing they did with Windows 7, which is address all the issues. Remember the marketing campaign for Windows 7? They fixed most of the bullshit from Windows Vista and used "every day people", actors obviously, but the campaign was "Windows 7 was my idea". It was a clever way to convey the message "yeah, we at MS fucked up, so we listened to you and fixed it"

I don't see what the big deal is with the so-called "spy" stuff. Every other company does it. Google and Apple are watching you. Your ISP is watching you. Why is it so bad when Microsoft does it? In fact, Microsoft has even LESS information because you don't carry your PC around, which means no GPS coordinates!

I personally use Windows 10, and I have no problem with it. My games even run faster! Windows 10 has all the apps you know and love, and they all run perfectly. And with the new and improved Windows Update, you no longer have to worry about the arduous task of applying patches! My IT guy loves it!

Copying Apple isn't a horrible idea since they have some of the nicest looking products on the market and the most robust. Microsoft just needs to take a better approach for handling it. The fragmented market thing will be hard to change since organizations like the United States Navy still run on XP and pay big money for Microsoft to keep supporting it for them. Some companies still run systems on COBALT just because it's so expensive and time consuming to replace a product that works just fine
>>
>>55061977
It's miles ahead of 8/8.1. It's also fairly robust as an OS in my experience. Vendors have just been lazy about pushing Windows 10 support to their products which is not at all the fault of Microsoft. All of that being said, I still greatly prefer 7.

Adobe did it. Beancounters love subscriptions, since it makes revenue much smoother and more predictable, and it removes the threat of the customers saying "Nah, don't need it, not gonna upgrade" when you release version X + 1. As happened to MS with Vista, the world just said "I ain't payin' for that, I'm keepin' XP".

Plus the whole push for convergence with tablets and smartphones. Those come with data plans and people are used to paying monthly fees for them. MS probably hopes it can get people to view their laptops the same way.

>and it removes the threat of the customers saying "Nah, don't need it, not gonna upgrade" when you release version X + 1. As happened to MS with Vista, the world just said "I ain't payin' for that, I'm keepin' XP".

people didn't upgrade to vista because it was a broken resource hog on launch which was *NOT* helped by hardware vendors shipping vista with machines that had lower than the minimum recommended specs that microsoft put out (i.e., 512mb of ram instead of 1gb, which ran fine on xp which is why hardware manufacturers did it but I digress) which led to extremely negative public impressions of vista

even if you had a relatively decent pc vista still ran like ass and many people ran into problems with aero especially when gaming, and it took around 2 service packs before all the problems started getting hammered out, but by the time that happened microsoft was rolling out windows 7 which actually ran *better* than winxp on all but the oldest hardware and ran far better than vista even on 512mb of ram (again, below the 1gb minimum specifications) but this time around hardware vendors weren't shipping machines far under specced

but hardware issues aside vista had other problems like an extremely nagging UAC which led to people disabling it (and still disabling it today up to win10 despite the issues with it being fixed in w7)

I went straight from xp to win7 and I regret not hopping on vista sooner but it was not a smooth launch in the slightest which is why people didn't upgrade (also see: win8 despite being technically superior to win7)

Microsoft wants to know you and everything you do so they can sell your information to advertisers.

Google has been recording your voice for years. Samsung has had the same thing in their Smart TVs and its been going on for much longer than that on the Xbox with Kinect, Amazon Echo and all these other smart devices that activate with a hot word are always listening. Somewhere buried in the EULA's are similar words to this samsung disclaimer.
