standard 10/100baseT has 8 wires in 4 twisted pairs, only 2 pairs are used, 1+2,3+8. the splitter just allows you to send another connection down the same cable

the other wires in the cable are for RJ-11 phone connection, or for ISDN

the splitters in the picture are clearly patched in to the structured cabling patch panels, not switches

tl;dr putting a switch on each end shares the bandwidth, using a splitter allows double the bandwidth

Done. Just make sure it's well secured, you don't want a piece of sandpaper fly off at 7200rpm. Screwing the spindle hub on top of the paper is a good way to secure it, like in the pic (random google pic because on the phone)
