I fucked up, dont laugh

my 14.04 ubuntu was messed up, reinstalled it, but accidentally encrypted or something... long story short my hard disk got formatted and i didnt know, so i upgraded to 16.04 but that was making me go into grub rescue mode so i booted 14.04 from cd and cleared my whole disk again from gparted. Then i took out an old windows 7 cd from 2009 and installed windows 7

anyway, should i upgrade to windows 10 or keep windows 7? i mainly use my computer for gaming. I dont play new games so w7 should run anything i wanna play.

Or should i try to reinstall 16.04

I switched to Linux a few months ago. Been going through programming tutorials compiling with mingw32, was no problem on windows up until now where I wrote a test program that didn't run well in a vm. So I checked wine and wit worked better. Thought I'd ditch the VM and just cross-compile from now on.
So I just installed the mingw32 toolchain for linux and it I can compile with
/opt/mingw64/bin/x86_64-w64-mingw32-gcc source.cpp -o exe

just fine. But I can't figure out how to use old and trusted mingw32-make with with this setup.

Can anyone help?

I'm going to dual boot Windows 7 and Debian with two SSDs. Do I need to do anything special, or just put Windows on one, then Debian on the other? I know when I dual booted before, I had to install carefully, mess with partition sizes, and install Linux second so that grub would overwrite Windows boot stuff, but that was also when I used a single drive.

Also, anything I should do as far as fucking with swap sizes or anything? I'll have a 250GB SSD and a 1TB HDD for each OS(so 4 drives), what's the best way to set that up so that each can access the others drive, and so everything is mounted somewhere good in Linux?

I suggest you a very simple way to make things up. Go ahead and install windows 7 and disable updates. Download wubi installer for Ubuntu LTS and run it. After restarting, Ubuntu's installation will complete in about 10 mins. You can update Ubuntu using
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
.

Then you have it. Windows and ubantoo.

My work requires us to change passwords every 3 months, when changed, it won't allow incremental password changes, such as password1 to password2.

Now would this mean somewhere these passwords are plain text as how would it tell its incremental if it was properly encrypted, or is there a secure way they can tell.

Does the password change form require you to put in the old password? If it does it could just check the hash to see its the correct password when changing it and then compare it to the new one without storing it.

But they probably are storing them in plaintext
>>
>>55041466
Yeah I am pretty sure they are unencrypted. Even if they are encrypted, the way that they check incremental changes could be pretty much flawed.
>>
>>55041466
they could just save the numbers and check if the new password has any numbers that are incremented by one from the old.

you'll never know without knowing the system behind it, but it's possible that they just save it in plaintext.

My dad has a Lenovo T400 running Windows 10 with Intel 5100 Wifi. Since updating it to Windows 10, the wifi drops out occasionally and I have to restart to get it back working. Can Americans actually buy a phone without cucking themselves with a contract?
>>
>>55042080
Yes. We've always been able to, it's that carriers used to charge you just as much monthly no matter if you bought your phone outright or not, so you'd be stupid not to get one subsidized from the carrier. Nowadays, more and more carriers have stopped subsidizing phones, lowered their plan rates, and you pay for your phone independently with the option of paying for it in monthly installments.

Yes you can buy the phone from the store for full retail price ($500-1000+), order one from an online retailer, or finance one (for 0% interest) with a prepaid plan.

This is the exact reason I told you to use wubi. See if you had used wubi, windows bootloader would start at the beginning to chose windows 7 or Ubuntu.

Since you seem like a beginner, troubleshooting with grub might be daunting.

But for the fuck of it, since you installed anyway, tell me your pc specs. Especially GPU in your case. Also does windows boot fine from grub? An screenshot/picture from cam of grub screen would be nice.

Linux uses ext, ext4 and such. Windows explorer for some shit ass reason doesn't show the drives formatted with such types. Windows shows only the disks with fat, NTFS and the like. So you can't see Linux partition from windows. Couple third party software do exist in windows which lets you view all partitions.

Sup /g/

I recently completed my first build, and I'm having some issues with the wireless adapter. I've tried all of the basic fixes I could, but I'm unable to establish a consistent connection.

I don't get "disconnected" completely from my wireless, but the rate bottoms out and I'm unable to do anything, and I subsequently get booted form any game/website that I'm on. Things I've tried:

-flushing DNS
-moving the adapter to a different PCI slot
-adjusting the antennas on the adapter
-removing the antennas on the adapter
-fidgeting with most of the wireless settings through windows

When I go into the software that came with the adapter, it will list the signal strength as "good" or "excellent", but the rate will fluctuate from 38-52Mbps, and then drop to 1Mbps (at which point I have no connection).

I've had two different computers sit at this desk in the past, with little to no connection issues. Here's what I'm working it-

http://www.tp-link.us/products/details/TL-WDN4800.html

Thoughts? Suggestions?

The creatives have much more bass than the pistons and a generally richer sound, with the pistons being more clear and easier to hear finer musical details than the creatives which tend to drown them out with deep mids.

They are both good, but I usually listen to my piston 3s more.

Learn me up about M.2 SSD's. I'm putting together a new rig soon and I'm thinking about using an M.2 SSD, but from what I've read they block the use of a lot of SATA ports, and from what I've gathered, will only leave me with 2 6gb/s ports and 2 shitty slow ones. Is this true, and is it really worth it at that point?

Okay, so I just got a new ASUS Mobo (The ROG Maximus VIII Hero) and Fractal Design's Kelvin S36.
The mobo has 2 cpu fan connections, as well as one for a pump. I hooked up the pump to the cpu connection point, but where do I connect the 4-pin PWM for the fans?
Should they be connected to the cpu fan connections, or just and fan connection?
I'm curious, since I placed the cooler in the front of the case.

I'm trying to set up a Linux-based router for my home network. I have a Raspberry Pi with integrated WiFi and Ethernet and a USB-to-Ethernet adapter, so I got one interface for WAN and two interfaces for LAN.

I've managed to get either Ethernet or WiFi to work at a time by fucking around in /etc/network/interfaces and with the "ip" tool. However, I've never managed to get WAN access on both WiFI and LAN. When I reboot the Pi, it seems that the interface that gets initialized first gets the connection, usually Ethernet.

Is there something I'm missing? Some obscure setting in a hidden config file? Should I use bridging? Pls halp.
>>
>>55044691
I suppose that makes sense.
I'm a bit confused, since the instructions for the cooler says to plug in the fans to and fan connection close to the 24-pin, and the pump to the cpu fan connection. But that assumes that there's no specific fan connection on the mobo.

It's not just apple, a lot of consumer tech companies are doing this now.

Basically, durable cables with good strain relief don't sell as well because they're heavy, don't bend easily, and don't look nice (they use PVC or something instead of the rubberized stuff used by apple, etc).

TLDR companies make "sexy" cables instead of durable ones because that's what sells

Everytime I boot my PC, I've had this "have to check for consistency" message, saying that one of my hard drive was fucked up, but everytime it tried to check the disk, the scan failed and Windows booted normally.

I didn't think it held any importance until I realized that everytime I booted a 3D game, my screen turns off, I hear a Windows error pop-up sound, and then I have to manually restart my PC because there's nothing else happening (the sound does go on for a few seconds, before stopping completely).

I tried to see if it was a voltage problem on my GPU or if my power supply was having failures, but after tweaking my system for it to consume less power, my PC still crashed on 3D games. The thing that weirded me out is that iso 2D games like Age of Empires, or Stronghold, don't crash. Same for 2D sidescrollers.

So I went on doing Disk Health scans with UBCD, and then I noticed that my disks looked pretty fucked.

So I'm asking you /g/, is there a possibility that those problems can cause such things ? The screen turning off and the hard reboot ?

Sorry for the image quality, I didn't know any other way to take a screenshot in the UBCD tool.

Hard drive was dropped onto a tile floor from about 4 ft. Now it just clicks when I plug it in. Any ideas?

I assumed it was the drive head trying to move onto the platter but I wasn't sure as I've never had a hard drive shit out on me before. I opened it up being extra careful, to check if there was an issue I could see but no, no scratches on the platter either.

If it wasn't dead before, it certainly is now. That's something you can only do in a cleanroom, any other environment immediately kills the disk.

>but that was also when I used a single drive.
if you still have this issue, and grub doesn't recognize window, boot on linux and run
sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
it will regenerate the grub config file and it will detect windows.
If you ever have an issue with the boot process, there is a tool called boot-repair that fix stuff for you automatically if you're lazy to search a solution to your problem.

>Also, anything I should do as far as fucking with swap sizes or anything? I'll have a 250GB SSD and a 1TB HDD for each OS(so 4 drives), what's the best way to set that up so that each can access the others drive, and so everything is mounted somewhere good in Linux?

Install windows on one SSD normally
the two hard drives should be formated and using the NTFS because windows can't into NTFS while linux can. It will permit to have your documents, music, videos, etc. accessible everywhere.
For the Linux SSD you can do whatever you want. I recommend you to have a /boot and / partition, (/boot is ~250 - 300MB).

If linux doesn't automatically mount your drive, you will have to play with the fstab file. Sadly I don't remember which modifications you needed to do to mount it automatically.

Then you don't want studio monitors. They're for producing *accurate* sound, which often isn't the most enjoyable. If you want something pleasant that still has the "look ma I'm an audio pro" wank factor, reference speakers are what you should get.

People enjoy the feel of them. It's highly subjective. People with more money than sense who prefer rubber domes and want the best of both worlds get Topre stuff.

They may have zero appeal to you, but it's best not to know what you're missing and that's coming from someone who enjoys theirs.

>>
>>55051022
Well I'd figure you'd want to keep using the laptop, but sure it would fit. If your case doesn't have mounts for 2.5" drives you can get a 3.5" adapter or tape it somewhere, it doesn't really matter.
>>
>>55051046
I would eventually be getting a different drive for the laptop, I'm just looking to save money and also since the laptop is currently my main machine it would be nice to have the boot drive already set up.

Thanks for answering.
>>
>>55050961
Most SSDs are 7mm, there are 9mm too but w/e.

With some cheap SSDs you might need a 3.5" adapter since they dont come with screws in the sides.
