And according to their FAQ they specifically say it's "not a distro", yet it seems to "replace" a lot of your distro if you use it. I've been going between Windows, Mint, and Ubuntu on separate computers for about a month now, and now I want to make my main computer Xubuntu. I've seen plenty of resources of how to get everything set up with two hard drives (I have an SSD and HDD), but am not sure about where to install certain programs and such.
For example on Mint, every time I install something I do "sudo apt-get 'whatever'", and everything is pretty much automatic. If I have two hard drives, how would I specify which drive to install to? Also, should I be worried about which hard drive (OS vs. extra volume) I install programs to?

I'm doing the amd64 gentoo install by the handbook and I got to the "configuring the bootloader" page but when I typed "grub2-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot", it told me that /boot doesn't look like a an efi partition.
I then reset the computer using "shutdown -r now" but now it says that the grub2-install command is not found, so how do I get back to the step I was on in the install?

Everything in the first two paragraphs looks great, that's almost what I'm doing as well.
The problem with Android is mostly Play Services, so going without the Play Store and gapps would be the ultimate goal.
I use protonmail, it works well, but using the protonmail apps on an android phone with Play Services installed is a risk, they might be logging your passwords as far as I understand.
I agree that startpage or other alternative search engines suck. My solution is to change my habits - when I search for one word ("Opensuse") or something common ("chicken breast recipe") I don't use Google, but when I need something specific I use incognito mode and Google. The point about avoiding Google is mostly avoiding tracking, so it should be possible to not use incognito when you don't save Google's cookies.

The Amazon integration was still there when I tried 16.04, but disabled by default. There is still an Amazon launcher icon in the dash though, which is mildly infuriating.

Thanks that seemed to work, although when I did "grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg" to generate the final grub config there was no output to say that any linux images were found.
I did cd boot and then ls and the only item listed was "EFI grub", so I am unsure how to progress from here.

Hello penguins, need your help with my babies first linux (Ubuntu).
When I use proprietary drivers I can get the resolution I want (2560x1080 60 Hz) but when I change to the open source driver my living hell starts.
First the login screen is in a really low resolution, when I log in the screen gets fucked up and changes it's resolution to 1920x1080 60 Hz.
I tried running xrandr commands to add my resolution, but whenever I try to add it with 60 Hz my screen starts blinking and I have to reboot my system. When I add it as 40 Hz, it works fine.
What the fuck is going on? How can I solve this?

I have a Debian virtual machine that I'm using to re-encode multiple mp3 files into a single opus using ffmpeg.
The files are stored on the host computer on an NTFS file system which I'm accessing via shared folder.

Wine is very basic, you usually have to install extra stuff with it. It's basically like a mini windows environment. If the game needs some libraries (like in your case probably a particular version of internet explorer) then it won't work right if the environment doesn't have it.

If I remember correctly you need to install IE and also some fonts (corefonts and tahoma or something) to get steam to work right in wine.
The way people take care of adding things to wine is with a program called "winetricks".

You set it up during install. Put root folder on SSD, put home folder on HDD. It's all automated mostly, it's really easy.

As for installing programs on different drives, Ubuntu doesn't work like that (for software in the repositories), it just throws everything in /bin. You could move that around but it's probably not worth it.

You can however use portable software that you download manually, or even compile it yourself, and then put it wherever you want.

They claim they based it (16.04) on debian jessie, but debian jessie boots just fine on these devices.

I can figure out user interfaces through deductive reasoning. For example, I have not actively used Windows since 2008 or something and yet every time I need to help someone with their Windows problems I just need to look through the interface for a while to figure out where to navigate.

Of course, in a *nix environment I'd probably use the terminal to achieve what I need. Normies will never figure the terminal out though, exactly because you need to read a man page or some other manual to be able to use it effectively. You can't learn to use a terminal through deductive reasoning, but you can with GUIs.

Floating WMs are kinda hard to make useful. The only ones i found with good default keybinds are mutter (gnome) and xfwm4. i use dwm almost default with default keybinds that i learned before even trying dwm so it was comfy from the start.
For floating WMs i need very strong window snapping/edge resistance and good keybinds to snap them to the quarter i specify or half i specify. A plus is if they stay the same size when i drag them away to be floating for real (this is rare but you can configure some WMs to do it).
if a WM defaults to floating/stacking or tiling mode can usually be configured so look for something that either makes sense for you by default or something that is easy to configure with plaintext, lua or some gui.
And aVoid desktop threads, most of them do it for looks, not useability. make/edit your own wallpapers for.maximum comfy.

Seriously, that's basically it. If you change a single file and rebuild, only the altered sections are rebuilt, the rest is cached which makes recompiling and testing very quick.
Visual studio on the other hand, takes fucking ages just to rebuild after you add in a single print statement.

Personally, I was turned off just by reading the wiki's description, it really doesn't make it sound much more appealing then the more common Debian related choices (although I suppose there is some appeal now that we've got solid evidence than Unity versions of Ubuntu and Mint are shit).

After years of having laptops that always had some sort of video card driver issues with Linux, i ended up inheriting a chromebook 11 from a family member. As it was "worthless and couldn't install office or anything on it"

First thing I did with it was this. Finally got a laptop with some GNU goodies on it.
