From what I understand binary blobs are parts of code which cannot be read, and you are not really sure what they do. They could for example extract what you are doing on your computer and send this information somewhere.

Is this possible and if so is there ways to safe-guard oneself against this?

it's possible, but you can try to observe for malicious behavior

How would I observe this?

You're close, but not quite. You generally can dump binary blobs, or even just directly access them on the filesystem. With extensive reverse engineering knowledge and professional tools, you might even be able to get a general understanding of what they do.

What you can't generally do is
* Verify for sure that they are not malicious
* Modify them in any way (and have them still work)

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
