It basically adds cost and complexity. You need additional components and machine/labour time to add such a feature. If you're trying to make an automatic movement as cheap as possible, the hacking lever is usually the first thing to go, along with the hand-winding. Seiko's 4R15 is basically a 6R15 with those features removed, just because it cuts cost (and gives them a way to differentiate the 6R15 and keep us from asking for something more like a 6R20). Some cheap automatics remove one or the other, though; the Seiko 6106 has a hacking lever but no hand-winding, and the Miyota 8200 has hand-winding but no hacking lever. And some expensive automatics have no hacking lever because it's completely pointless; the Seiko 7018 comes to mind (why the fuck would you want to hack a chronograph with no running seconds sub-dial). But why Patek can't put a tiny little one in a Calatrava? I don't know. Maybe it's their way of reminding you that you really are on the bottom-feeder end of their customer base, and to them you're no better than some pleb with a Seiko 5.

Me, personally, I think hacking levers are pretty much mandatory on standard 3-hand designs.

>But why Patek can't put a tiny little one in a Calatrava? I don't know. Maybe it's their way of reminding you that you really are on the bottom-feeder end of their customer base,

The vast majority of their watches don't hack, even the ultra high end grand complications shit

It's basically a simple stamped part on a pivot machined out of the mainplate. I don't see why it's so complex. I still say the main reason it's not used more is cheapshit escapements not restarting.

Anyone have any good tips on how to buy a vintage omega off of ebay? I don't want to waste money on ones with a refurbished dial or shit like that.
>>
>>54928653
Your escapement would have to be pure fucking garbage not to restart. Then again my Vostok 2414 has to be shaken sometimes even when fully wound. As for the costs, the mainplate machining and the stamping of the pivot are still extra processes. Removing them saves less than $1 per movement, but it is still money saved, and more importantly it gives you a reason to pay more for something with hacking.

>>54928709
That is completely ridiculous. I never really looked into Patek calibers, but given that literally everyone else has hacking starting from the mid range, I figured they would too. What's the point of "muh accuracy" if you can't even hack the movement?

Well for example an Amphibia is an insanely good diver at Amphibia prices, but it would be pretty shit for the price of a Marinemaster. On the other hand a TAG-Huehue would be acceptable at Tissot or SARB price, but total scam dogshit for the shekels TAG asks for them.

The 52xx quick-set may break as a result of wear or misuse, but it won't just unexpectedly and inevitably fail by itself as the 56xx quick-set will due to it resulting purely from aging of the plastic gear in the quick-set mechanism.

Ergo, a serviced 52xx will not have the quick-set fail as long as you don't set it between 9pm and 3am, whereas a 56xx quick-set will eventually fail in 100% of 56xx watches.

The difference between these two things should be self-evident.

Beginner watchmaker/battery monkey anon here, 90% of Swatch Group watches that come in for a battery change are Tissot, and about 70%-80% of all lower-midrange watches. Tissot is a commoner brand now, that is considered "affordable luxury" by the ignorant masses.

Interestingly I see a lot of Citizen (a lot of it women's titanium). The only Seikos are 80's-90's analog quartz, and the odd Seiko 5 that was never serviced/got busted up.

Their, particularly low end watches, are simply an attempt to look like they are worth the money. It's trying to play the part of a quality, expensive watch without putting anything meaningful into it. Unique materials, movement or complications? No, just trying to appear like it has those things and spending a lot marketing to yuppies who just don't feel comfortable springing for a Rolex. Then they can walk around feeling good about spending 1/2 as much as a Rolex but it being 'nearly as good!' when in fact they spent pre-owned Rolex money on what might as well be some 500 dollar Tissot.

>One of the major differences between this model and the original G-Shock DW-5600C is the use of a polymer case material with a stainless steel case back secured with four screws. The original design featured a stainless steel case and screw-down case back and is highly sought after by collectors.

It's non-shitty because they had to reach back into their past before TAG got a hold of them in order to produce something decent. Although I still wonder about their quality control.

don't listen to too many people on 4chan. it's just something you can pick up by lurking/looking around

Seiko gets shit because it's common as all fuck on forums and shit, but they are common for a reason and you don't see them out and about as often.

it's a good brand to start with because they have good pieces at price points from 50 to 1000 use

swiss pieces you are paying extra always, and they are probonly not made entirely in Switzerland unless it's a rolex, JLC, or a real high end brand.

it's not always obvious what is "objectively good" if there is such a thing, but a good indicator is second hand value.

a Rolex in mint condition will pull probably 80% or more of its retail unless it's old or has some extra collectors value.

a tag Heuer or Tissot might dip as low as 60% of its value even in great condition.

remember above all else that it is SUBJECTIVE what you like. Especially on pieces that you intend to keep forever, it doesn't really matter if you overpay a little bit or people don't think it's a "good" watch

Why do people hate on the SubC? Can anyone say anything other than "fat lugs" or "easy to shatter bezel" which are design elements implemented by the company who make them? These watches are not tool watches anymore, and that's fine, if you want a tool watch there are many alternatives that will go deeper and take more of a beating at a fraction of the cost, why would you want to use a $7000 watch for that? Remember the old bezel was very easy to scratch and would often have to be replaced, at a cost, any subjective argument against it is simply a matter of personal taste until someone can explain otherwise. "but muh heritage!1" Guess what? times change, and this is how the submariner looks now. I just don't understand the hate.

>>54931979
Theoretically, yes. That's certainly an interesting idea, but I don't think it'd be practical. For the price that I would have to charge, making all of these pieces by hand, I'm sure you could get a batch done in China for cheaper.
>>
>>54932131
Spite, mostly.
As you said yourself, the Submariner used to be a tool watch, something you could batter and beat, and it will hold it's form. Then Rolex just sort of stopped putting the effort in.

It is still a very nice looking watch, and one of the only good looking watches Rolex make, so it has that going for it. It's just Rolex wanted to maximise their profit margins, so they cheap out on things that would otherwise be easily damaged or often replaced.

Blame capitalism if anything.

I disagree.
People buy things because they have a need for them, either emotionally for physically.
Therefore people do buy watches to make themselves or other people happy.
My question is: Does it actually work?

Gentlemen, I have a god damn speedmaster set to be delivered tomorrow.

Purchased online from the Bernard Watch Company. They supposedly have a good reputation, but this is my first time dropping this kind of money on a watch.

Anything I should immediately look out for or do once I receive it?

They have a three day return policy where I can simply send it back with no fees.

>>
>>54935705

Do not take any tags/stickers/etc off the watch or wear it yet. I didn't really look through their site but some grey market dealers are really anal about their return policy and if you do that stuff it's voided. Use first two days to test and inspect it thoroughly. Wind it up all the way and let it run to test the power reserve, check the accuracy over those two day, make sure the chronograph functions are working properly. After those 48 hours if everything seems to be good then wear and enjoy your new watch.

At the time they were made, the chronometer and King Seiko special versions of the movement were much more finely factory adjusted than the versions used in the LM Special series.

However, at 40+ years remove, factory adjustment no longer matters and it is condition and servicing that matter.

So far, from what I've seen, any good condition 52xx in regularly serviced condition should be able to get to under +/- 2s/d

Got it, the day wouldn't switch at all and it would gain 5 minutes per day. Let it running for a couple of days and it stabilized to +2 sec per day. Tingled with the day date and it started working but slowly from 12AM to 4AM.

Now after a bit fucking around with it, 5 days a week it instantly jumps to the next day at 12AM.

Luckily i scored a parts movement to scavenge the calendar mechanism and keep for parts for any further 52XX's i'm going to get. It should actually have a really good looking green dial.

Either way, it will be a while till i get it properly done. Though i'm still not sure on which JDM to get next likely either another 52XX cal or a 5740. Still i got a month (starting tomorrow) to ponder at it in bootcamp.

Also, a 78XX series Cosmotron could be nice if one appears in good shape.

At this point, vintage chronometers are kind of meaningless because the adjustment they received out of the factory has long since been knocked out of whack. What really matters is the inherent accuracy and engineering of a movement. The Seiko 52 "meme caliber" is probably among the best for this.

As for new, I would think the cheapest you could get is either from Mido or Stowa. Not sure if they still make it or how much it costs, but in 2009 my dad bought a Mido Commander Chronometer for something like $900. Yeah, mid-tier swatch stuff, but it's a nice watch and fantastically accurate.

What's the point of spending €900 for a Mido when you can get a vintage Rolex for the double and some more?

Why would anyone do that?
>>
>>54944145
As far as i recall they are trying to make them on the same machinery and in the same plant, but the batch from a of steel bezels from last year was chink in origin.

Some people in /out/ and here have been mentioning some crucial problems with the Casio dw5600 models. Something about the heat bending thw body and water getting in through the caseback? Does anyone remember?
>>
>>54944236
First of all, it was $900, not 900 Islamic Cuckbux. Second, when you get a vintage Rolex, count on having it authenticated and serviced, which will add a few hundred dollars to the purchase price (and as an aside, I have never seen an $1,800 Rolex in good condition with its original papers). Third, some people may not want a Rolex because it attracts unwanted attention. Fourth, my dad is not exactly a watch guy, and I couldn't help him since this was years and years ago, when the best watch I had was a Citizen diver which didn't hack and kept absolutely wretched time. Fifth, vintage Rolexes tend to run at 19,800 bph instead of 28,800. So if you want the smooooth then go Mido.

I still like the Mido though. Thin, fairly small (40mm or so) and has an inherently good movement even if the name isn't there.
>>
What watch should I get next? I already have a SKX007, SARB033 (sold), SDGM003.

I was looking at the Steinhart Ocean one with the ceramic bezel, as it fits my price range and seems like a cool diver (I'm getting rid of my SKX007) .

What else can I get in this price range? I'm not interested in Obris Morgan, as it is too big for me.

Unless you're rich and wear expensive clothes all the time people will think your rolex is a fake.
Why would I want to resell a Rolex? For €1800 I don't need the papers.
I said the double and some more, which means more than €2000.

I'm not talking about the quality of the Mido, I'm saying that I don't see how it has a space in the market. Once you go over €500 you might as well get a Rolex or something like that. What's the difference between spending €1000 and €2000 for a watch?

It was me, I dont know how what I said evolved and I dont answer for that.

No water gets to the watch.

the 5600 model has a resin case that is completely separate from the watch itself, but unlike most g-shocks, this case does not have screws on the sides to keep it in place when it inevitably expands a bit.

This means the indicated area in picrelated will separate a bit from the main body.

The water and shock resistance of the watch are not compromised at all, but that's just an open gap for shit to get inside.

I originally posted it because I'm anal about those sort of things and I superglued my case into the main body to close that gap.

It's a minor thing for most people but it bothers me that absolutely nobody mentions it anywhere.

Smart watches exist, so it seems people do think so.

It's also frowned upon to pull out your phone to check the time when in a conversation, looking at your watch however is a perfectly acceptable thing.

It's sort of something you get used to. Very quickly. Having a comfortable strap does help. Eventually you don't even notice when you don't have it on, you're just used to something being on your wrist.

>currently I don't need to know the time all the time
