Noob here. Just bought an Steelseries M800 with a gift card. It was only £80, down from £140. Is it alright? I have a shitty membrane keyboard.

Not what I'd recommend to anyone looking for a mech, but if you got it with a gift card that you couldn't have used for much else it's fine.

I want to get a different keyboard, so I might as well

>Budget
£90.

I don't want to spend more than £90 on a keyboard, it seems unreasonable, to me.
>Location (continent at least)
England // Mainland UK
>Preferred switch type
Not Kailh red. I don't like the feel, they're too easy to push and I struggle to not miss press keys; they actuate to easily, IMHO
>Layout
ISO, preferably
>Form factor
80% or 100%. 80% idealy, but 100% is also good
>Backlight
IF it doesn't add to price too much, then sure, if not then leave it.
>Previous/current keyboards
a zalman mechanical keyboard with kailh reds, specificaly the ZM-K500 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zalman-ZM-K500-USB-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B00A53LCQ8)

Ideally not a linear switch, since I don't like the feel when typing.

Also the FAQ pastebin don't work.
>>

$100-$150

I was told Cherry Reds were the best for gaming, maybe I'm wrong

I like backlighting but I don't want something that screams GAYMER

I've never had a mechanical keyboard, which is mainly why I want to switch. I've only used my laptop keyboard and a standard circuit keyboard

>>

I don't want Topre, so, not worried about budget

Cherry Clear

ISO.

TKL is the only real requirement.
Avoiding gaps between rows/areas like those Noppoos would be nice, but I do want the arrow/home/end etc. keys

Filco Majestouch 2 TKL, Cherry Reds.

Considering a new kb from pckeyboard or Unicomp but was told that you should only buy restored ones from them. The guy who told me is of questionable competency so I thought I'd ask here.

Are they nice? Anyone purchased one before?
>>
>>54933190

They're OK, a used IBM-built model F or even M would be much better quality (and cost the same or less). Plastic is much thinner on the case/caps, and have pretty bad quality control.

>nice looking but expensive as fuck modern ones

Fuck it, I recently got over being a rage-aholic and shit, so upgrading from the cheapo scissor-switch mushboards seemed like a worthwhile step, but broke in school and shit.

Then I saw this fucking thing. Clickier than I hoped, but I knew it was an audible click (apparently closest to mx green?) switch so I'm pretty damn happy. Love how heavy it is too.

$40~50 for actual switches (not membrane+faked switches) seems crazy, and goddamn if it doesn't feel a lot nicer than it cost.

I'm using DesignSpark PCB as it's free. As far as how to make a PCB, I got a degree in EE, and a few years of practice in PCB design. I'm sure there are plenty of guides online as far as how to get started.
The case I'm planning on using took a fair amount of research to find, but I decided to use an OKW Comtec 200 F v1, pic related.
Alternatively, you could 3D print your case, if you're up to that.
Right now I'm stuck finding keycaps for an odd number of keys. I contacted Fentek and Signature Plastics to get a quote, but neither have replied yet.

I really hope that those atrocious spelling mistakes are due to your keyboard.

You can pick up cheap ass membrane keyboards for a few bucks all over the place. Get it second hand from a goodwill store or something if you're that strapped.

Only if it's blue (or can be changed to blue), otherwise I don't care.

Generic keyboards, I've only cared about my mouse until I tried a mechanical one just recently.

Well I am from Germany and shipping is a bitch. Looking for ansi pbt doubleshot or subdye keycaps. Got the Poker, live it but Legends are already fading

>I am from Germany and shipping is a bitch
I'm from Switzerland. Welcome to shipping fees and import taxes. It's a secondary reason as to why I prefer to DIY as much as possible.

There's plenty of dyesub keycaps available in ANSI. Obviously not in Europe, so you won't really be getting around shipping costs.
Your best guess would be chink online stores, or if you're lucky an online shop that's located in the netherlands (they use ANSI there iirc). Or you can just buy whatever you like the most from wherever and deal with the fact that life is suffering.

Anyone able to identify if that piece of shit at the top is an off-brand buckling spring? It's pretty far away so if it there's much doubt I'd rather a local anon pick it up for themselves

There's no particular reason to not buy it, especially not at that price.

Can I fix a Steelseries 7G with a Cherry G81 controller?
>>
>>54961037
Yeah I guess this place is pretty dumb when it comes to tech product prices, for instance there's a reference 1080 right now at +$100 usd above most US online stores, then you have the Ducky I just posted which is nearly 50% off compared to the listing in NCIX. The DDR4 ram prices here are also crazy at usually 50% above their prices on newegg, the list goes on.

Never hard a mechanical keyboard before. Just ordered the keyboard in my picture. How badly did I fuck up?
>>
>>54961213
Why would you ask this AFTER ordering?

anyways, you didn't fuck up unless you don't like whatever switches you chose
>>
>>54961213
you did very good
>>
>>54961243
Because I'm an idiot, and I just impulse purchased.

Wait, there's more than 1 type of mechanical keyboard? WUT? How can I check what type I ordered?

>>54961263
Guess this makes me feel slightly better.

it probably says in the order what color switch you bought. if not when you get it you can remove a keycap and check
>>
>>54961567
idk, did they email you a receipt or something?

the basic spec that you're looking at is the switch type, usually blue, red, brown, or black
https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/wiki/switch_guides

now i don't mean to be harsh or anything, but you probably shouldn't get into the habit of just throwing money at something to join "le exclusive club" without knowing why you're doing it
>>
>>54959988
it could be cherry oem ask for a model number
def not buckling spring
>>
>>54961623
Email says I ordered "clicky action" so I'm assuming that means blue because the others are rarer according to your infographic.

>>54961640
You're probably right. Amazon's receipt says I ordered from the "The Keyboard Company", here's hoping their returns policy is decent.
>>
>>54961701
if you just ordered it then it probably hasn't shipped yet and you can just cancel it
>>
>>54961724
Nah ordered it late last night. Already had the dispatch notice when I woke

Been using laptops pretty much exclusively for the last 10 years or so, so when I was ordering my new build from amazon last night I threw that keyboard in because it looked nice.

Who knows, I might even like it and not need to use the returns policy.
>>
>>54961790
like you said you probably got blues, and if all you've been using is laptops this keyboard should feel orgasmic
however blues are very loud and that might annoy you
>>
>>54961790
yeah i don't think any mech is going to feel "bad" vs a laptop keyboard

whether you made the exact ideal keyboard purchase doesn't matter at all and i think you should stop thinking about it and close this thread and never come back. the important thing is that what you've bought is something that is an improvement on something that you will use basically every day.
