Asking "Hey guys, what's your opinion on x?" is frowned upon.
Wireless is frowned upon.
Headset requests are frowned upon.
Noise isolation ≠ Noise cancellation
If you dislike a headphone suggestion, try giving a better suggestion to whomever asked instead of going "hurr, brand x sucks"

Sorry kiddo but "analytical" isn't a buzzword.
>>
Why don't you get some fashionable and good looking headphones?
>>
>>54917729
But is is true. Akg posters are usually the most vocal, and the most active in the threads. That is why I made the mistake of ordering some, and they do it for free. i don't see how that is not a shill, same with grados 4 years ago.
>>
>>54918146
Because money spent on making a headphone look pretty is money that could have been used making it sound better.

unless you want to step up your budget considerably the v6 is still the best headphone sony makes imo.

>>54918406
well they're bassy if that's what you want. most of the switch positions are similar except for one where the bass just drops off. and on all of them the treble is jank. heavy drop from upper mids on, then back up to a peak. CAL is much better, and it costs less. the isolation and durability will be less though.

>>54919954
they're good, but very bass heavy, like the se215.

Picked up a pair of Sony XBA-H1's from Best Buy for $75. These are my first in ear's and I'm very happy with them, although I'm missing my in-line mic and controls.

The frailty of the cabling and jack concern me though, I don't see them lasting a year. Any ideas as to how I can reinforce them? I was thinking about buying some cable sleeving and and running it over where the cable meeting the plug.

Phonak Audeo PFE 111 (Used them for workouts before, but the cable started to detach on one side. Repaired them already once but it started again, now on both sides)
Shure SE535 (Sent for warranty, since one sides filter got clogged I think and sound barely comes out of it. I doubt they will repair/send me a new pair)

Stuff that would be nice:
remote (forward, pause, back)
Detachable cable, though I doubt you can get that with this budget
Tips that are compatible with the ones from Shure IEMs

I am thinking of getting the Piston 3, though I have a far better budget and I fear that they are way worse than what I had before. Any advice on them?

Also what do you think of Sennheiser Momentum? Do they just look nice and have a meme brand on them, or do they actually deliver good quality?

The version with the remote is slightly above my budget (100€)

Also the filter of these looks like to be completely exposed. I am afraid that they may get clogged after a short period of time like my Shures.
Did anyone had similar problems with this?

Also does someone know if the remote works with the Sansa Clip+? I'm afraid that there is no actual remote working with it...

>>
>>54923526
I'll see if they replace them with warranty, if not I'll give it a shot.

The PFE 111 were simply fantastic. I think these are the only ones where you could simply replace the filter if you want to have some more bass (green or black filters, white is neutral).
I had them for about 5 years and they sounded nearly as good as the Shure SE535 (Notice the price difference, about 100€ to 400€).

Mine now look like some ghetto buds with shrink tubing all around the buds to reattach the lose cable. Though the cable broke again right at the end of the shrink tube. I guess the plastic of the cable is just worn out and breaks apart easily.
Would try to buy the same ones again if there was a possibility, unfortunately Phonak bailed from the In-Ear business and you can only buy used once out there with no warranty what so ever. Also new filters cost around 30€ nowadays...

>>
>>54928531
Because more expensive must be better~ Audiophiles.

Diminishing returns start at 300.
Amps and dacs hardly make a lick of difference above ODac/O2.
Most recordings aren't that great and it's ultimately the limiting factor in hi-fi.
>>
>>54928531
>>54928664
It feels like shopping for headphones is just a gamble because it's so difficult to listen to them in person before buying. Of course Amazon has an amazing return policy but if you do too many returns they ban you. Shit is extremely frustrating.

Also;
How can I reinforce the cabling and jack on my XBA h1? Posted this before but I'm worried that they're going to fall apart in like a year.

The cable of my Creative EP-630 broke. (Must be the 5th or so time this happened and I bought new ones every time when it wasn't easy to repair with the soldering iron).

Now the EP-630 are around since 2005, and most technical things got a lot better in the last 10 years and are even cheaper now.
Are there better ear buds in the same price range (about 16€, let's say up to 20€ or $) now?

It's most important for me, that the bass response is as good as the one of the EP-630 and that it has the same or a higher loudness (the EP-630 have 106dB and 16Ω).

I also have the very cheap (6€) Panasonic RP-HJE120E1 as spare ear buds, because they are often recommended. They don't sound bad too, but they aren't loud enough and I can't hear the bass. I also don't like their clunky shape.
I'm not looking for audiophile grade ear buds, I there is nothing better on the market I'm going to buy the EP-630 again.
Any tips?

I just bought my first pair of decent headphones (Sony MDR-V6) and am very pleased with them. Unfortunately the headphone jack on my PC is broken.

I have been plugging them into the speaker jack instead, but this causes the PC to treat them like they're speakers, which messes up a few things. Directional sounds are definitely weird.

Is there a cheap hardware solution that will grant me another headphone jack without compromising sound quality?

I used to have a little $5 USB-to-headphone converter but the sound quality on it was really bad and it broke pretty quickly.

These are a really nice pair of headphones, a shame bose shills kept these from being inexpensive on eBay two years ago when I wanted them
>>
>>54928419
I would, they're a SLIGHTLY less detailed 702 but with actual bass and sub bass, they're also more comfortable than the 702 thanks to the memory foam pads and more narrow+flexible headband.

Some people say they're a bit warm, some say otherwise. Unless you HATE a slightly warm sound then I would def recommend them. Try to get them from ebay instead of amazon though, mine cost £179.99 but they cost £220 on amazon.
>>
Just wondering if anyone can help me out here. I have a pair of Seinheiser HD 201. They work but the only problem is they are way too fucking quiet. Are they supposed to be like this?

After owning a few low impedance headphones I now bought two 250 ohm headphones (DT 770, 990). According to the specs, none of my sources (macbook, sansa clip, Yamaha ag06) should be able to adequately drive them, but I do get loud enough sound from them. Should I still get an amp made for these higher impedance headphones or is it all the same as long as it is loud enough?
>>
>>54930681
Bose sound good but their quality is ass. The cords will break and the plastic will snap.

Elaborate. High impedance loads are easier.

I bought it from this listing: https://www.amazon.co.uk/HiFimeDIY-UAE23-ES9023-Optical-Converter/dp/B00AOH5JTQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465161306&sr=8-1&keywords=sabre+dac

However the one that arrived is actually this one:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hifime-Sabre-9018-USB-DAC/dp/B01B16X7WY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1465161306&sr=8-2&keywords=sabre+dac

I'm not sure if they sent me the best one by mistake or if the one I got is just a new shell that has replaced the old design. Either way it's great for me, the dac cancels noise and that's all it needs to do for me. I don't understand why people spend crazy money on dacs.

Don't know what else to say. All sources I've found say that low impedance headphones (like 32 ohm or something) are good for weak sources like a phone and that you need an amp with more power for high impedance headphones. The Fiio e10k says something like 'up to 150 ohm', for example.
>>
>>54931112
You need less current for high impedance headphones but more voltage. Either way, voltage sensitivity is a better indicator of how headphones will perform on your amp

$30 Apple Earpods

I'm mostly used to cheap $10 earphones but these apple ear pods I currently have sound really good imo. What I like most about them is the clarity and bass. Overall the only thing I hate about them is that they're not durable. As long as the music quality is on par or above apple ear pods I'm game. It's my personal benchmark since so far these are best sounding earphones I've owned.

So I've got a Sound Blaster Z and its pretty great. Except it doesn't work with Linux, which is a bit of a problem for me. The main reason I stick with it is because of the headphone surround sound virtualization it includes. I'm aware of a couple other implementations like it (CMSS-3D and Dolby Headphone) but I have no idea if they're Linux compatible. And to be honest I'd probably rather just have a USB DAC for simplicity.

Are there any Linux compatible sound cards or external DACs that include something like CMSS-3D or Dolby Headphone?
>>
>>54936535
Honestly I can't tell if the dac is changing the sound, it just allows me ot remove the 'noise' from my onboard sound.

They make very different type of artifacts, so it is of marginal relevance.

I don't like the dark tone, but more so, the FR unevenness. I don't like any of those T50RP derived headphones, mind you.

>>54934616
Not necessarily, not that I really know the audio circuitry used.
Being a reference headphone doesn't make the electrical load any different inherently.

>>54940911
Watch out for the memory wire, not everyone likes it. It should be easier to get a new cable for the 535 and W40 (MMCX) than the the IM03.
Singapore should have a ton of shops with demos though, go out there, use the sets and find some more.

IM03 is in the line of the CK100Pro. V-shape balance and bright. Accessories are limited, from what I remember. Didn't spend much time with either.

SE535 Red and W40 are darker sets, the modified 535 less so. Acoustically, the 535 red is just another 535, with a grey (330Ω) damper. You can swap it out yourself.
535 has flatter bass/mid, W40 is more midbassy and upper mid recessed. 535 tends to roll off the highs, barring canal induced peaks, W40 has good treble extension but with a more general reduction in level.
535 is more sensitive than W40, to the extent that is hiss sensitive. 535 is very sensitive to impedance which will cut the highs even further, W40 is much less so. That would increase the upper mid some if you had enough in line.

Shure and Westone share nozzle diameter, so you can use Shure foams and Westone Star interchangeably if you are inclined.
>>
>>54941309
>They make very different type of artifacts
You sir, are a retard. Even cheap analog to digital converters do not independently create artifacts. If the artifacts are not in the file the aren't going to be created by your source.
>>
>>54941309
Seems like W40 is right up my alley then.
Bless you anon.

MMkay, fa/g/gots. I need a frowned-upon wireless headset for my PC. I'm in meetings for a lot of my work day (work from home) and sometimes I need to take a shit or walk on my treadmill without missing anything.

Also, I have large ears and some of these headphones just don't fit.

Pastebin answers:
Budget is whatever I need it to be.
Amerifat.
Plugging into PC.
Closed.
Need to be as comfortable as possible.
Preferred tonal balance -- don't know enough to say.

Preferred music -- instrumental/electronic/classical

Past headphones --

Likes: They were cheap
Dislikes: Not comfortable
No indicator to say whether I was muted or not.
Low volume was still high. (Mute to 1% is abrupt)
Not wireless so I can't go take a shit.

They're really comfy, so they have that going for them.

Hijacking to ask about amplification:

>>
>>54941382
Not that anon but talk about pot calling the kettle black. Price is irrelevant, all cheap and expensive DA-converters exhibit some amount of nonlinearities and cause artifacts to the signal. Whether these are audible is another question. The point was about the type of artifacts they cause and the artifacts created by lossy audio compression are mostly fundamentally different from the headphone response and its limitations.
>>
>>54940425
Since no one can definitively say how much of a difference DACs make I'm starting to think it's all placebo. Sure it may may convert a digital signal to analog, but it seems like people have widely different opinions on what they do. What are your opinions on this /hpg/?
>>
>>54943898
upgrading your dac does fuck all. Your motherboard already has a good dac. The difference (if there is one) between onboard and an external DAC is very small and probably not noticeable.

This is coming from someone with a schiit modi, so it's not like I'm against them. However when I got them I didn't notice a difference at all. It looks cool on my desk so there's that.

Even upgrading your amp is overrated imo. I upgraded from just plugging in my headphones (who according to headfi "need an amp") to a schiit stack and the difference is very small. Maybe my hearing is bad.
>>
>>54943994
This. Maybe instead of investing in "hi-fi" DACs and amps people should just invest in decent headphones. I can see how low bitrate music can sound bad vs 320 but I also don't think there's a difference between that and FLAC.
>>
>>54943994
It's just features like Asynchronous playback, DSD128, or higher 192kHz / 384kHz upscale. And balanced interconnect connections. Some come with a remote control too.

MDR V6 or 7506, whichever you find for less.
About the tonal balance, it's just that some people enjoy more bass in detriment of mids or treble, some like v-shape or warm signatures, some want as flat as possible, if you say something like "warm, too much treble makes my ears tired" we can point you a different direction than if you say 'bright, i need to pinpoint details when editing stuff".

I actually have the lambda normal bias too. Paid a little more than 250. I don't know if something's wrong with mine, but there are some really high peaks in the treble. Fixable with EQ, but I'm also paranoid about throwing them around since they seem fragile. Really wonderful headphones otherwise.

Might be something wrong with yours. The normal bias are known for having very smooth treble compared to other lambdas. Mine were noticably smoother than the other ones I've had.

Hmm, maybe. I haven't tried any other lambdas (or other normal biases) but everyone seems to describe it as warm or laidback while I think it's pretty bright.

To my ears, using sine sweeps, the lambda's treble is a smoother than a lot of other headphones, it's just this one huge peak at about 9.8khz. It sounds fine on most music, but certain electronic music it turns into treble rape. It basically sounds like a better DT880 to me.
