Just use your phone, no need to spend $100 on some gay adapter. I just connect my Note 3 to wifi, turn on pdanet, and connect it to my desktop. It charges my phones and gives me wifi, I win every time!

This is actually a decent solution. USB tethering and using the android phone/tablet as an antenna works fine with the better devices. E.g Samsung.

wf-2111, costs like $5 and works (you get the drivers from the chip manufacturer anyways, which is ralink/mediatek)

alfa awus036h is the best, nearly 2 mile range.

Not what regular WLAN with omnidirectional antenna is designed for to begin with, and I am pretty sure 802.11ac does not have more range than 802.11n, even though somewhere not quite at the exact limit of its range it may have larger bandwidth.
