I have a Toshiba Satellite L505D running Fedora 23 that overheats. The fan doesn't properly turn on which cause the laptop to shut down. Is there any way I can mitigate this issue?
I've tried following this: https://askubuntu.com/questions/22108/how-to-control-fan-speed but unfortunately pwmconfig doesn't seem to work on my laptop and lm_sensors only report temperature and not fan speed.
I've tried things like powertop and TLP for power management but the issue remains. I've also looked into toshutils but I got an error when I tried to build from source that said my OS wasn't supported.
I'm at an impasse on what to do.

So just a few minutes ago I got a pop-up insisting a restart my computer to update Windows. Thing is, I turned auto-updating off and am on Windows 7. Same message is on the Windows Update screen so chances are it's not a virus, but I'm scanning anyway.

Point is, how the fuck do I stop this? I don't want to restart my computer and end up with a bunch of telemetry shit, or worse, end up with Windows fucking 10. Is there anything I can do to sabotage this update?

Depends on the area and if your neighbours use it. Most folks are on adsl2+ though, and seem to have 0 idea cable is even an option. I'm on 100mbps cable (with telstra) and i typically pull full speed all the time (108-115 on speedtest), worst case is around 7MB/s (though may have just been download server). If you're thinking of going optus they offer unlimited quota on cable, 100mbps speeds too. Not sure how their overall network compares to telstra though.

I play my vidya gaems in windowed borderless mode. Problem is, sometimes if I have something even somewhat graphically intensive on my second monitor, my frame rate tanks (but there's no drop reported). I have MSI's afterburner running in the second monitor, and it's not my GPU being maxed out. What exactly causes this?

My computer randomly loses sound or its replaced with a long, endless beep. If im watching a video the video starts speeding up awkwardly. Putting it into sleep mode and waking it up makes a POP sound and then it's fixed.

Also sometimes it freezes with this endless beeping. Any chance it's just the sound card? I think I fucked up the sound on my mobo when I first built the PC but the sound card fixed it.

A good guideline is to use a motherboard rated for SLI, which just means that the board has at least 2 PCI lanes that operate in x16 mode on their own, or x8/x8 as a minumum.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but what jobs can I realistically get working with GNU/Linux or other unix-like systems?

Currently a 19 year old NEET using GNU/Linux on all my computers. I have started reading C Primer Plus 6th Edition, but I have trouble reading it for long sessions without getting distracted, so I am only in the second chapter. I did, however, finish Highbrow's email course on C. I've started a bunch of courses on Codecademy, but only really finished the command line course and the SQL course. Also, SQL sucks.

So basically I can't really program yet, but am trying to learn, and I don't want to use Windows. Should I spend more time learning before applying anywhere? If so, what sort of stuff should I brush up on?

In my experience, most enterprises use windows, at least on the frontend so knowing windows is almost required. Also, most enterprises won't even let you near their backend without a useless degree in IT or at least taking them on a couple dates. Get your foot in the door at a help desk and move up from there. If you land a job a chill place, you can probably work on a degree at the same time and possibly get tuition reimbursement.

Unfortunately, yes. There is a reason that Windows has the majority for desktop users. Like I said, MOST enterprises use Windows on the frontend and maybe a mix on the backend. I'm sure there are places that don't use Windows but I can't speculate on that.

Periodically "My computer" / "This PC" whatever you call it on Windows 10 will completely fuck up and not respond. It works fine, but then all of a sudden doesn't.

It say's "working on it" trying to display all my harddrives, but then when I go to close it, Windows Explorer restarts.

I'm planing on getting the RX480 once it comes out.

Is this a 'sane' build? I want to play games, program (in android studio, for example), and have firefox open with lots of tabs. I have an old monitor, so the resolution won't be very high, though I might upgrade in the future. I already have a case and PSU. I'm wondering if I need a better cooler, since I want to OC the i5.

I decided to buy this case after seeing it on sale(was going to get a NZXT Phantom). After a month found out it has a common problem with air flow. I thought about it and wants to cut out a vent pattern in the front panel since the fans are right behind it and the current vent is a 15"X1" vent that really throttles it, reason why it has bad air flow in the first place.

Is this reasonable to do or should I just leave the front plate off?

My torrent clients can't connect to certain (multiple, but not all) trackers.

It happens across clients and machines. Bittorrent traffic still works fine. I can ping the trackers and get a response. I disabled firewall and antivirus. But for some reason, the actual torrent clients can't get a response. This didn't used to happen.

Never had it happen to me, I can't really say what happened in your case.

I will say, though, that if there are going to be pins involved, it does make sense to have them on the motherboard rather than the CPU. CPUs are expensive, mobos are (relatively) cheap.
