Why can't I use "/"s in a filename

every sane operating system uses it as a directory separator

thus putting it in a filename would make the file system flip out

No, the FS doesn't care. it's a userspace convention. You certainly can use a slash if you code carefully for it.

You have to account for it by using the strip metadata character everytime you encounter one.
Most of the time it's \, it doesn't look to pretty
