If it's a laptop it actually does make sense to switch between the intel and tha amd graphics depending on how gpu intensive something is for power saving. Read your distros wiki page on hybrid graphics. If it's not well written read the one on the debian wiki and the arch wiki.

What distro should I use for my home server?
I've added an SSD to the server for the OS to go on and I need to reinstall, so I figured now was an opportunity to try something new, and maybe set up some fancy new shit like partitionless btrfs filesystems + subvolumes.

I kind of want to stay away from Debian-based things, since dkpg/apt is so fucking slow.

I've been using Arch for quite a while now and while I really do enjoy using it I'm looking for something a bit more easy to maintain as my day to day OS.

But, having used Pacman and AUR for so long I'm not sure I can go back. It's so damn comfortable and easy it's ridiculous. So, any other "simpler" distro that has the same level of comfort when it comes to package management?

All I can think of is Ubuntu but even they have the PPA bullcrap.

Is it a smart idea to install a Linux distro such as Arch with no X server? All I want to do is basic documentation in text files and program C++ CLI applications. I have a Note 4 that I use for texting and for studying actual books and stuff. i booted into mint 17.2 to update it to 17.3... After that 17.3 was on top of grub. SOmehow I managed to get Windows to be back at 1, but the default entry is set to entry#3 (17,3 recovery).

update-grub says there's a syntax error on some line 164.
How do i fix this shit? I want my boot order back in order.

Hi guys. I recently bought a new tv, and tried using it as my primary screen. It's otherwise fine, but when the screen goes dark enough, it decides it doesn't need to light up the backlight anymore, which results in a distracting and ugly dark-blink until something bright enough happens, even if it's just one gray pixel in the corner.

Is there a way to force one (dark blue) pixel to sit in the corner to prevent this from happening? I tried to force kruler to stay on top, but video and image fullscreen programs bypass the "on-topness" stack entirely.

How does Linux typically handle CPU overheating? With my laptop, Windows typically throttles and runs like complete shit until the temperature normalizes. Linux doesn't seem to do that, but does freeze and requires a hard-reset (shortly after which it's prone to freeze again). Does this sound like overheating?

Installed Ubongo 14.04 and my audio is really soft in comparison to windows.

I would use Linux again if the software I use most was supported on it. GIMP is no replacement for the Adobe apps, and LibreOffice is no replacement for Office 365. Sorry.

Another reason I don't use Linux is that the people I have met who are into it use the same kind of rhetoric that is used in the official ISIS magazine. It makes me feel utterly unsafe to leave problem solving into these people's hands.

I'm not saying that in an unfriendly tone or anything, I'm saying it as a former Gentoo and Xubuntu user who had a lot of bad experiences with the Linux community. Meanwhile, Microsoft is excelling in customer service these days and have nicer people posting on their forums.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 15.10 on a partititon that already had Ubuntu 14.10 but it's broken as hell thanks to nvidia propietary drivers driving me insane.

My problem is that the ubuntu installer gets stuck at 'preparing'. I reformatted the former 14.10 partitions to ext4 and still got the same problem.

So I tried getting my Lenovo to dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows 10. I disabled Safe Boot and changed the boot setting from UEFI to Legacy. Now during the installation process it doesn't recognize Windows 10 and it only allows me to either install Ubuntu completely or partition the disk, however in the partition table it doesn't detect root in 13GBs of free space.

Is there any way to dual boot Win10 and Ubuntu?
