put it to sleep then. It'll boot near instantly
>>
>>52917525
Why not just turn it off completely? Modern systems boot in a matter of seconds. Why waste those few watts in sleep mode when my computer boots faster than I can sit down in my chair?
>>
>>52917563
Even on an SSD my computer doesn't boot that quickly because I run programs on startup. Email, IM, btsync, torrents. It's fairly fast but sleep is faster. And anybody using a hard drive is just suffering.
>>
>>52917563
Yeah, nah. Computers still aren't that fast, dude. Unfortunately...

When I used Windows 8 (God only knows why I stuck with that shit for so long), it booted in ~10 or so seconds. That's not including typing my user/pass as well.

Sleep is probably 1 second.
>>
>>52917525
putting it to sleep fucks up all sort of crap.
For instance when having multiple monitor if any of these are off when it comes back then the system will assume it was never there to begin with and completely mess up the windows layout.

Also some applications outright crash and others like firefox start leaking memory for no reason at all.

>>52917563
because opening up the same applications every single time I turn on the pc is tedious and annoying

Anyway, just be smart and with a windows 10/ lightweighted distro you can get your computer to boot quite fast, like really fast.

For example, I don't have any (or the least possible) things running on startup, because I don't always need them (and sometimes just power my pc on for a quick file search or something like that).
You can just make a script for all the neat programs you want to start up automatically, that way you can choose to run it or not, depending on your use.
>>
>>52917382
Repeatedly bringing electronics up to operating temp and letting them cool down again can shorten the lifespan of components and loosen solder joints. Of course, it's not that bad with modern shit, and computers are obsolete in a few years anyway.
>>
>>52917382

I've been hibernating my machines since the vista days

Exactly. Why wait that long between boots when you can just put it to sleep?
>>
i sleep it because of my chasis fans. i haven't "discovered" how to control them yet nor do i really care.
>>
>Not just leaving your computer running 24/7

Shiggy diggy

Constantly parking your hard disk heads reduces it's lifespan.

Wew.
>>

This sounds like it could possibly be true...

I've always thought a good way to do backup would be to power down hard disks when they're not doing backups. Is it more likely that the opposite is true? could you use some kind of hardware to keep disks spinning and occasionally writing to elongate life? that doesnt sounds super helpful
>>
Sleep is literally a second to desktop from the button press. Hibernation is longer but it's legit shut down. Shutting down IS useless.
>>
>>52920354

Put them in your xinitrc. My desktop launches firefox and transmission on login
>>
>>52920369
Hibernation is gone from most if not all desktops.
>>
I always use sleep because I don't want to restart IRC, hardware monitoring and whatever shit I have going on. It costs me next to nothing to keep my computers running all day at idle, I don't think sleep even registers on the electricity bill.

Shutting down is for stupid people only.
>>
>less electricity used
>Computer starts up in like 15 seconds anyways

Unless I have a download or something going there is no reason to leave it on all the time.
>>
I just set it to sleep when there's no activity for 20 minutes.
>>
>he leaves it on all day

>never dusts it out

I've got my OS installed on an SSD. It only takes ~15 seconds to fully boot into the OS.
Can you people seriously not spare 15 seconds of your life in order to not only save money on power, but help conserve the environment?
Fucking pathetic.

Plan to use it within 30 min - leave on.
Plan to use it the same day - sleep.
Plan to use it tomorrow or later - shutdown.

>>

The main reason to leave your computer on is longevity.

Rapidly cooling your PC by turning it off damages the silicon over time.

Leaving it on all the time can extend the lifespan of hardware by years.
