Screens have been getting bigger in regard to smartphones as well btw. Look at Samsung Galaxy, Iphone, even Ipads.

The technology was simple not ready yet. There are numerous pitfalls for example when I used to wear those annoying glasses my head would hurt.
Sure, there is a lot of progress to be made but it will come back.

Also, 3D glasses were too expensive. Similarly, when companies started selling projectors, sales were disappointing. It was expensive, and you can only watch it in the dark, and who wants an expensive television you can only watch in the dark? You basically require an entire room, just for the purpose of the projector; which wasn't a viable option for everyone.

Now that the technology has improved (it is possible to watch it in daylight) and prices have become cheaper, you'll notice a significant increase in projector sales over the coming years. I expect the same resurrection to occur for 3D television.

if you do some research before you buy, you can find a TV with pretty good input lag, almost comparable to a monitor. 2014 sony models were especially good, 2015 samsungs weren't tooo bad either
