Tried debian, hated it. Tried Ubuntu, OK, tried mint, everything went better then expected. What do you dislike about mint?
>>
Mint is perfect
>>
Nothing. Mint is an excellent choice. Everything works without extra configuration.
>>
what did you hate about debian?

Mint does not have a policy against including nonfree software, it includes nonfree binary blobs in drivers packaged with the kernel, and it includes nonfree programs in its repositories. It even includes proprietary codecs.

The video drivers were not working for my 4650, did some googling entered a few terminal commands which did nothing but give me a blank screen, I don't like how barebones it is I barely know how to use the terminal I could see Debian quickly becoming a huge time sink for me. I do love the Debian logo though.
>>
>>52871490
I liked it. The dealbreaker for me was that my network connection was acting wonky with it. It would continuously cut on and off, making browsing the web slow and painful. I never could get it fixed so I just went to another distro, and haven't had the problem since.

I tried 2 times debian plus 1 non free insall, every time it fucked my graphic and sound. Feoda doesnt. Work either.
On mint it work OFTB easily, so i love mint
Only thibg to hate is ols peograms and shitty security
>>
Nothing, I use it every day.
>>
>>52871705

I had the same problem. I thought it was just my old mac mini. I feel better now.
>>
The logo is ugly.
>>
This entire thread seems to have boiled down to
>I use Mint because I can't configure Debian or Fedora and I don't want to use Ubuntu
Now that's not an entirely bad thing as new users have to start somewhere, but Mint's idea of a GUI for everything can be awful. The initial setup and opening windows left and right was almost cringeworthy when I tried it. A lot of the interfaces just felt clunky and unrefined like they had to do something, but didn't necessarily need to put a lot of effort into it.
Also

>>52871490
It was my first Linux 5 or so years ago. Everything works out of the box. My only complaint is how it like Ubuntu uses MD5 hashes only, which is insecure. They should also use SHA1, SHA256, and SHA512 also minimal.
>>
It's a derivative of a derivative of an outdated distro far removed from upstream. That appeals to some people. It doesn't appeal to me. Not all bugs can be sorted out by the package maintainer, let the upstream guys fix their shit instead of hacking things together to make them work.
>>
Too many packages installed by default. I'd be ok with a Mint minimal ISO so I can pick what packages I want. But clem won't do it.

So I choose Debian. They have a netinst ISO image. You can do the expert install, start with nothing, and only install the packages you want.

CrunchBang++ is pretty decent for those who have had issues with Debian installations. I mean I know #!++ is just Debian with openbox and a few accessories, but it is a really nice distro. Though I did switch to Arch on my desktop, laptop, and local server a few months ago. Despite the meme, Arch can be really nice distribution if you can follow simple instructions (via the wiki).

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
I don't like the green colour scheme.
And it's basically ubuntu, so why not just use ubuntu. And ubuntu is basically just debian, but I'm not masochist enough to go that far.
Cinnamon and mate are both pox.
I use flashback/fallback gnome on my main systems and lubuntu on my old crap.
Fedora is rough as guts btw.

I would never install Arch though, too much configuring and not enough time as a student.

It's not that bad if you use an installer. It's only a bit harder than Mint install then.

But I support all the distros so I'm not saying some would be bad. They all have Linux afterall.

No wonder people hate the community here, you guys are pretentious fucks

I know it might surprise you, but yes actually some people simply do not have the time to configure and maintain their OS all the time. We need our OS so we can get OUR work done, and I can't have Xorg breaking all of a sudden due to an update (Don't fucking tell me it doesn't happen, it did for me and it does for many)

Yes I should've read the main page to make sure there are no issues with the latest updates, but why? I don't want to do that. Nobody should have to do that.

Debian is doing it right, I never had to be afraid of doing an upgrade or dist-upgrade, EVER. Arch on the other hand failed right outside the box after following the wiki with a segmentation fault in Xorg. I mean what the fuck? How about some quality control on your packages? At least have a stable repository for those of us who have a wife and kids or something. Think of the children!

I mean what the fuck? Who's the target audience here? I consider myself a power user with years of experience in Linux, and even I can tell you that this is way too unstable for any kind of normal use.

The only way I can see myself using Arch on a regular basis, is if I spend a crazy amount of time to get it to work, and then never upgrade again in my life.

If Arch had stable and unstable repositories, you know, some fucking quality control, then I'd be all over it.

All of this being said, I've tried Arch a few times, and when it worked, it was glorious and blazing fast! But it breaks too fast and too easy, so I had no other choice but to sadly say goodbye.

LMAO. Linux Mint is so much Ubuntu, it even makes a directory named "ubuntu" at EFI System Partition. I don't see any difference between all this Debian-based user-friendly wannabee-Windows distros. They all should only be used as the first step into the world of Linux-based systems.
>>
>>52885093
>Who's the target audience?
Definitely not everyone. Probably people like me who think it's fun to mess around with unstable shit. That being said, I've been using it for a year, and it's only really "broken" once. And it only broke because I shut off my computer on accident during an update.
>>
>>52880735

As much as I dislike Stallman, his statement, in addition to being a meme, does explain why Linux is not an OS. Can you offer an actual rebuttal, or are you ready to admit that you are just a stupid faggot who has no fucking clue what you are talking about?

FreeBSD is an OS. Solaris is an OS. Windows 10 is an OS. Linux is a kernel. However I will continue to refer to "GNU plus Linux" as simply Linux because it upsets Stallman and all the dipshits who love to suck his cock. That doesn't mean that it's technically correct.
>>
>>52882053

I don't want an OS to just werk. I want to know why it works. I want to take it apart and make it work in new, different, and maybe even better ways. I want to understand what the fuck it is I am doing.

If you want your OS to just werk, then look no further than Windows or OSX. They are happy to take your money, and hold your dick while you piss. Don't worry about how they are making you sit down to do it. It's for your own good. Don't worry about how the toliet also has a giant, rusty spike that gets jammed up your asshole while you do it either. It may be poorly designed, but it gets the job done. It just fucking werks anon, it just fucking werks.

You can't compare systems when only Linux has a monolithic kernel. NT is not the same thing as Linux. Monolithic kernel has everything it needs. An operating system is something that makes applications talk to hardware and Linux does that.

The dumbest chart I've ever seen tbqh. Religion doesn't work like that. You can't just classify religions like that. Pic related would be a lot better, but religion can't be explained in a chart tbqh because new religions aren't started by people who decide the religion they currently associate themselves with isn't the best and they can do better.
