I don't get this. Cyberpunk is set in a dystopian future where corporations and states are indistinguishable from each other and everything is networked and monitored. This is exactly what is coming to pass. In effect, the only goal for a cyberpunk thread is how to dress in this world, not how to pretend it exists.

Might as well call it /mainstream/ general.

No, that's a handheld personal computer that vast swaths of the population use to remain networked 24/7, often broadcasting their surroundings to hundreds of similarly networked individuals

I was perusing old /cyb/ threads and noticed Exit the Matrix (http://www.ncmilitia.org/matrix/index.html) was kill. I'd be willing to compile the whole document into a pdf/epub if anybody would be interested in that.

God-tier literature, an absolute must read imho. Drop that link into archive.org in the meantime if you just want to read it.

I dunno, man. I read a bit on the Wayback Machine and it's pretty blase, at least in present-day context. The heavy use of the Matrix and the networking advice are all dated. It might have died a timely death.

How do we revive interest in cyberpunk?

This anon >>52672201 is right. We're finally living in a cyberpunk age. We don't need to pretend anymore.

We need to embrace the culture. I know there's more like me on this board who aren't consumerist drones.

And I know lainchan exists but it's way too slow and I think we might be able to attract more people into these /cyb/ threads if we keep them up and drum up some discussion.

Needs updating, urgently.

I've gathered a list of software which although big, and it covers all fields, tries not to repeat itself.

Is anyone on /cyb/ interested in a pastebin with that or should I use another format? If so, which one?
>>

Yes OP here i'm intrested in a new paste i'll look for new stuff too :)

>>52677233
Wish I could share my bookmarks, there is so much out there than say "alternative" actually doesn't reflect the diversity of the options we have.

Like for example the web browser. I have a list of firefox plugins (which I am building to share right now), but I also am about to taste a CLI web browser like elinks because it looks so good. With that, I am willing to spend time learning to set up a system wide adblock and a web accelerator (squid and privoxy).
>>
Can anyone really tell me why cyberpunk is a punk subgenre?

It seems to me, in almost all the media associated with cyberpunk (ignoring for a second the actual real world happenings), the main protagonists seem pretty normcore and use consumer grade tech (Case's Ono Sendai, the vr tech in Ready Player One, etc).

Meanwhile, in the real world cyberpunk culture, it's all anti establishment, maker/hacker culture, and predominantly the "raver" aesthetic, with an extreme hate of anything consumerist or not homemade (Linux over windows, cobbled together pi computers over pre-built hp or dell, etc.)
>>
>>52677430
save them in an html file and upload it
>>
>>52677681
Mr. Robot is pretty cyberpunk.

But I think we're moving away from cyberpunk being a genre and towards it being a reality.

plus he protagonists usually aren't normies in their own universes
>>
>>52677725
Was thinking of doing it in the future. All kinds of bookmarks are embedded with personal data and my html backup file is over 55 mb, editing would take me a while.
>>
>>52677854
Damn, i got like 500 bookmarks which i consider a lot and the back up file is only like 1mb.
>>
>>52677758
Thanks for the clarification. Sorta makes more sense now.

...The book actually points out at several points how easily a katana can get stuck in an object/person, and also how much duller it is than the horrifying obsidian knives carried by the antagonist.

Cyberpunk is a fantasy world where late 1970s punks would be relevant and influential outside of media and entertainment.

Case is a 1970s punk: isolated from normies by his obsession, willfully addicted, amoral. He's just set in the future with a cool computer skill that makes him relevant to a mainstream world where the 1970s punk really wasn't, outside of entertainment.
