Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Best GPU for Advanced Dock?
>>
Hey guys! What's the best thinkpad for hardcore gaming?

Thanks!!!
>>
>>52661132
Gt720
20W and surprisingly beefy

Best GPU to use in the Advanced Dock? I know the PCI-E slot is a tight space, anyone have specific dimensions?

What the fuck is hardcore gaming
>>

whoops forgot I'd already asked the first question

Wouldn't a GT 730 be better? It's still under 50W, unless it's too big for the space?

There are a bunch of different models of 730s - most are even slower than the 720. The 64-bit 338 core GDDR3 or 5 models are faster. The 128-bit model has half the cores.

I prefer to stick to the 720 - it runs a lot cooler and just werks.

To get to 12GB total it will cost you about $30 for a single 8GB stick

>The ThinkPad P50 has currently not many real competitor. That could soon change, however with the new Dell Precision 7510 and the HP ZBOOK 15 G3, which should be available shortly

Thought on the new P50? Price tag seems a bit hefty when a W530 might run all my needs but it's got all the new ports and a pretty good i7 to boot. New Zbook seems nice but I've seen HP's prices not to think twice about it

unless you want 1080p later on down the road get the 420
both take the same battery, so the t420 should theoretically get better battery life

What should I expect to pay for an x230?

All the local listings are $400CAD+

In Canada, I see above $300 CAD for the typical i5 model. For i7, above $400 CAD+ and if you got the IPS screen for the non tablet, it will cost a bit. This is on ebay price and it drop a bit if you go to Kiji or Craiglist but don't expect much. Saw one for $225 on Ebay but didn't get it.

>>52663663

I don't know myself. I just read the X220t I just bought has an intel i5 "ivy bridge architecture"

Not sure if that means it has an ivy bridge cpu or sandy bridge cpu.
>>
>>52663663
5-10% CPU performance, 30-50% iGPU performance.

Also, the X220 has Sandy.
>>
>>52663730
How the fuck did he get an ivy bridge cpu in the X220T then? Is he bullshitting? What
>>
>>52663440
For the same reason most 730s are worse than the 720s or why the 770 is a rebranded 680.

But probably because they want to replace the G 210 with an 700-series and make the upper low-end (*20,*30,*40) part of the 900-series for some reason, as the *10 is generally a few generations older.

In a nutshell, marketing.
>>
>>52663768
i mean, how hard is it to replace laptop cpu's? never tried it before
>>
>>52663730
which is better?
>>
>>52663787
T-series have socketed CPUs, so it is pretty simple. X-series have solderedCPUs so you unless you have some rather costly tools, it is next to impossible.

The T420 and X220 have Sandy CPUs, they theoretically support Ivy Bridge, but that would require a custom (as of yet nonexistant) custom BIOS.
>>
>>52663813
Ivy
>>
>>52663721
>>52663839
that seems super shady, ivy bridge X220T anon
>>
>>52663865
>>52663839

So what can I do about this on Ebay? Does this mean I'm eligible for a partial refund since you guys are saying it isn't an ivy bridge cpu?
>>
>>52663768
Could be a board swap. As far as I'm aware, the X230t board is by fit, relatively identical to the X220t board, right down to the ports
The X230 board doesn't into X220 frame properly though because they switched to MiniDP on the non tablet model

Is it worth trusting? Hah, probably not
>>
>>52663886
first i would verify that it isn't an ivy bridge cpu, then i would try to get (some) money back but keep the X220T, it's a good machine and the sandy bridge cpu (i have it in my T420) is pretty gud so
>>
>>52663908
I5-2***m = Sandy
I5-3***m= Ivy

Ok, let me autism this for you. When you have a lot of external things, like monitors, keyboards, lasers, printers, lans.... connecting that all up is a fucking pain in the ass, also considering that for instance, I got 3-4 desks I work at during a week with different crap I need to connect. Docking makes me better at autism and caring less about connecting all that crap everytime. Just lay it down, and it werks all at once.

So I picked myself up a W500 for work but I seem to be having issues getting windows to work on it. Normally at my work, everyone just brings in their personal laptop and remotes into a Windows VM where they work from so I was considering just installing a Linux distro and using a remote desktop client from that but I'm unsure on how good remote desktop is on Linux. Anyone want to shed light on this? What clients are good? Pretty much needs to be as good as Windows' inbuilt one or better. Multimonitor support is a must

Here are my choices of x220:
i5 2.6 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, IPS, $315

i7 2.8 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, IPS, $325

WHICH ONE??? They're both in excellent condition.

I'm leaning towards the i7. I will be running Linux solely and am a bit concerned about the power consumption of the i7 though...

Thoughts anons? Please help! I will post many pics and review of the one laptop after you help me decide.

Do you get your hardware advices from a fucking Best Buy employee?

i7 consumes negligibly more power and gets shit done slightly faster, which means it can go back to low voltage idle mode a lot quicker than the i5 can.

Now tell me if it's worth the $10 extra when it comes with a free SSD on top.

There are models of the Lenovo Thinkpad 11e with Windows installed, and models with ChromeOS installed.

It used to be the case that you could not install Windows on a chromebook because the BIOS was different. Is Lenovo going so far as to change the BIOS on this board, or does ChromeOS not require a different sort of BIOS anymore?

Thanks if anyone can answer that question for me.

Depends what you've had to the past to compare from.
Build quality of a my T43p is vastly different compared to T430. It's still durable but not as robust.
Most people dislike the chicklet key travel and newer layout of the keyboard.
I have gotten used to the keyboard layout, though I'd prefer the traditional 7 row, I'll be fine with the chicklet 6.

Some models have soldiered ram now, they aren't as easy to do maintenance sometimes.

I have a data plan on verizon and would like to use on my next laptop. Currently I find interest in the dell 7370. The dual usb c ports would be nice to have.

I also have the x1 and x240/x250 on the short list because they offer an LTE option.

Oh fucking hell I just checked eBay. Of course right AFTER I buy the cheapest buy it now I see, 2 of the same model pop up at low sub-$300, but they do have some damage/wear and that doesn't. Not sure if that means I didn't do good

The used ThinkPad buying guide says that $390 is a "want it now" ie buy it now price for them so I think I did moderately well
>>
>>52670864
>>52670790

Not sure if people here do this but I check replacement parts first and then check out used thinkpads and factor in the cost of replacing the parts and see if it's worth it.

I got an $89 i7 x220 with a broken but usable screen and a broken palm rest.
All together I spent around $190 to fix it and was still cheaper than the i7s on sale at the time .
>>
>>52670909
In hindsight I probably should have done that, but I'm in college and currently basically laptopless (I say "basically" as I have one but it's rocking a C2D and has a battery life of maybe 2 usable hours so that isn't really usable for college) so I needed to get a new laptop and fast. The one I was using last semester completely broke so I got rid of it (it had a whole list of problems before breaking so to fix it was probably just not worth it. Thing was basically totaled, not due to mistreatment but simply weird problems here and there that added up) so I've been without laptop for a while in an environment where a laptop is nearly a necessity.
tl;dr I would have bought cheaper and broken but repaired but I don't have the time to do that (I may not even have the tools, depending on the nature of the repair)
>>
>>52670964
I'm in that situation too anon , but thinkpads are really easy to repair. I'm just trying to save you some money :3

>>52670420
When it comes to upgrades, if you aren't jumping at least 2 generations, you may not notice much of a performance increase.

Not sure what your x60 specs are(/were RIP) but x61 won't cut you off at 3GB RAM. It'll take 8 but 4GBx2 modules are prohibitively expensive; you're better off at 2GBx2. You can get Middleton BIOS for SATAII, kill the whitelist, and have the possibility of a SXGA+ IPS screen. Penryn processor equipped boards exist for a modest CPU/bus improvement. As with anything, an SSD is a big improvement.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can swap an x61 board into a x60 chassis if it's your mobo that is dead and you want to keep most of what you've got.

Thinking about buying this t430s and possibly replacing the screen: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T430s-14-i5-3320m-8GB-1600x900-dual-battery-backlit-W10-Pro-/222004146013?hash=item33b07a6f5d:g:r8AAAOSwUV9WpCx9

What should my max bid be?
>>
>>52675321

can i change what the button on the thinkpad pen does with sharpkeys? the one that comes with tablets.
>>
>>52675695
make sure the t430s uses an edp connector instead of a lvds one if you want a quality screen

i think all of the t430s use lvds

I'm curious if there are any ips options available

No, the shitposters are the people that ask inane, nonspecific questions when the information is either clearly documented in the links in the OP or can be gleaned by knowing how to use the advanced search capabilities of auction sites.

Stupid questions belong in /sqt/. Just because you say the word "thinkpad" in your post doesn't make it appropriate for this thread.

Why would you buy that instead of an older thinkpad? That newer i5 is like 10% faster than an older one.

Buy a T420 with an i5, put in an SSD and more memory, and upgrade the screen once the kit is done, and you'd have a better machine than that.
>>
>>52661914

Seems okay to me. I paid $160 for my T420. I didn't get a smokin' deal, but it was definitely a good price relative to everything else I found around the same time.

The T420 screens, even the HD+ ones, are unforgivable in 2016

>'p' models were the best, just like how Dell Precisions are retardly expensive as well.

You say that but Dell Precisons tend to be at the bottom end of mobile workstation pricing, Lenovo is in the middle and HP is even more expensive.

I want to get rid of my Precision M4800 now to be honest.

> >1366x768
> >1920x1080

Sorry, what are you trying to say? The T420 had 1366x768 (awful) and 1600x900 (not bad, but poor TFT angles).

I believe a 1080p IPS kit is going to be available soon.

In the meantime, 1600x900 is acceptable for me for mobile work on a laptop. I'll plug it in to my IPS for serious work.

'soon'

It's been 'soon' for over 6 months now.
>>
What features should I be looking for in a second hand t420 laptop?

Just want it for taking notes on and watching netflix
>>
>>52676727

That's not a very long time.

If you're that upset, then get the 420s, which already has a kit out.

>>52661166
>>>/v/
>>
>>52676736

Screens are 1366x768 or 1600x900.

I recommend getting the cheapest 1600x900 and putting in your own SSD and memory. It seems like every jerkoff who slapped in a second DIMM thinks it's magically worth an extra $200.

Any other thinkpad screens with digitizers compatible with my x220T?

Just got a new used x230. Any major bloatware I should remove? I got rid of some 3rd part already like sugarsync and the cd burner crap

the fuck
>no more IPS 1600 x 1200 displays
>hardly any IPS 1920 x 1200 in laptops
>1366 x 768 is the trending norm

>>52676727
Just mod one yourself then, like how some did with the X61 and X31

>>52676736
4GB RAM, 2.5GHz proc, intel graphics (discrete not much better), AC adapter... idk what else, they have been trending about $120 - 160 for non project ones.
's' variants can't have their processors upgraded because they used soldiered RAM.

>>52676775
some have been resupplied
non 's' kits are the problem childs

This might sound retarded but is there any way to bypass the onboard flashchip that loads boot firmware with an external flash chip?
>>
>>52676841

No I don't, because I don't have a 420s.

That said, I'm not seeing any reported problems with these. How about you stop being a condescending prick and either offer up clearly worded information or fuck off?
>>
>>52676821
congrats, you found a panel that's incompatible with your LVDS port! Enjoy your wasted money!

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Replacing_T430_screen_with_a_better_one#T440p.2FT440s_1080p_FHD_IPS_Panel

getting the ips panel working requires a chinese converter board that isn't sold any more

thank me later for spoonfeeding you
