They aren't that bad.
Opinions on one of these? Since original 1920's-30's art-deco watches are expensive as fuck.
Another one, that's gold+brown.
>>52655753
I agree that the original bezels are meh at best. But i dislike how the 420 case sits on my arm. The lug size is too small.
I'm working on getting a new bezel for the 090 case.

How much would a Seiko SQ 100 sell for in yurop?
"C 5Y23 8A50 A4" is the only thing the seller lists.
>>52655052
Where do i get one of these? I have a few automatic and mechanical watches and desu i don't like battery powered watches and would rather just change the strap on my current watch to a smart strap, but i don't know where to get one.

technology
[tek-nol-uh-jee]

1. the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science.
2. the application of this knowledge for practical ends.
3. the terminology of an art, science, etc.; technical nomenclature.
4. a scientific or industrial process, invention, method, or the like.
5. the sum of the ways in which social groups provide themselves with the material objects of their civilization.

Labradors are big.
Hey /g/,
I have a casio f91 right now, love the watch and size, but the strap is breaking. I don't really want to put a new strap on or get another one. So my question is, what's a watch that's pretty much the same size as the f91-w, and is digital?
>>52655675
Damn what will be next?
>>52656670

Here's somebody's wrist shot. I just hope a 1920's style watch on a young man doesn't have the same effect as a 1920's style hat, if you know what I mean.
>>52656862
I remember someone saying that they go through batteries really fast.
>>52656862
Quartz is cheaper and more accurate.
I wish that someone still made tuning fork movements. It is basically an accurate mechanical watch that runs off of a battery. Unlike quartz, which moves the hands with motors, the gear train is directly pushed by the movement of the tuning fork. I think that there would still be a market for tuning fork movements if someone produced them again.
>>52656934
I know that modern Bulovas, which use a high beat quartz movement, eat batteries very quickly, because they have to push a motor ~16 times a second. I do not think that tuning forks do, but I am not sure.
>>52656913
Watches are small enough accessories that you can afford a bit of embarrassment there. Besides not like many people will actually connect that watch to anything in particular.
I fucking well know that deep inside, I'm a dirty fedoraboy; though it mostly comes from my love for old cinema. Actually dressing like it was the 50s would be too much, but I can afford to wear an old-timey watch, it won't ruin my image anywhere.
>>52656939
I wonder what it would cost to begin production of one, either a copied design or a new one.
>>52656939
The accuracy difference is still pretty high, no?
>>52656817
Spend a couple bucks more and get the F-105W. The backlight on the F-91W is worthless, while the 105 has the comfy illuminator backlight.

>>52657024
Mechanical watches do sell as well though.
>>52657024
Accutron movements were rated at 2 seconds a day. Cheap quartz movements are usually a bit more accurate.
>>52656939
Tuning fork watches can be just as accurate (if not more so) than a regular quartz watch (aka not a 9F seiko). An omega f300Hz is more immune to positional variance than an old accutron with a 214 movement, so it'll stay accurate no matter how you place it. The megasonics going at 720Hz should be even more so.
>>52657056
>Accutron movements were rated at 2 seconds a day.
You mean 1 second per day.
>>52657012
Too much for what it can pay back it seems.
>>52657039
Yeah but a tuning fork movement is even more niche.
>>52656281
Just searched some and found that Montblanc sell a strap accessory but only with the watch. Don't think anyone else develops these accessories.
>>52657083
I have always read 2 seconds. Maybe some were more accurate.
"A forerunner of modern quartz watches which also keep time with a vibrating resonator, the Accutron was guaranteed to be accurate to a minute per month, or 2 seconds per day, considerably better than mechanical watches of the time."
-Wikipedia.
>>52657116
I think that there may be a lot of demand for tuning forks if they were marketed right.
>>52657207
I just wish megasonics weren't so hard to find.

>>52656519
Why is there not even one quartz watch with a smooth second hand? Like how quickly would it drain the battery?
>>52657312
>gore thread
>>52657355
There are though, the UHF bulovas have a smooth sweep. Although that sweep is only 16Hz (the steps of the hand, not the quartz crystal itself). Meanwhile real tuning fork watches are at least 300Hz.
>>52657355
Already exists, look up hi-beat quartz:

Clear model paint, like Tamiya or Gunze? They're high quality, believe me scale modelers are way more autistic than watchfags.
The worst are carfags when it comes to paint, gloss and clear lacquer paints have to be PERFECT or they move to another manufacturer.

>>52657568
hm I'm sure I know someone who has some stuff like that. A thinner is sometimes also recommended - is that something that goes hand in hand with that kind of paint?
So far all I did was take a nintendo 3DS and lume the L+R buttons but that's so much more forgiving than a watch. Need far more control and a curing time of much longer than like a minute

My daily watch is a blue Ministry Amphibia. >>52655675
>>52657610
Tamiya clear should have a good enough thickness out of the bottle to paint hands with it. There are thinners for it, but for Jap acrylic I just used alcohol. That might not be a good idea for a watch though, alcohol tends to be very aggressive with paints, you might strip the dial if you try to re-lume it.

I'm seconding that post in the previous thread: why aren't there day/date GMTs?
I checked all Seiko 5s already and it seems none has a GMT feature. Also checked all the biggest GMT ranges, including Glycine, and there's no day anywhere.
Really seems to be a crown issue. There are some day/date worldtime quartz though, but even those only have one hour hand, and you need to switch in-between timezones with buttons. If feature is key, Casio has all that's required, otherwise that might just be something smartwatches can do better.

What's a cheap-ass watch I can wear that won't make me look like a tool, I mean $50-100 range. Mechanical or digital doesn't matter to me as long as it can tell time.

I'm in the military and require a rugged and durable watch.
How are G-Shocks? Do they live up to the hype? Or would something be better?
I would be looking to spend at maximum, 200USD

Other things in your price range that are good are Timex, especially the Expedition series, and your lower end Suunto (not the Core, that's just a tacticool oversize watch that compiles useless features from their cheaper watches into a single model. You can get the same quality from the same brand for only 80 freedom dollars on Amazon.Com)

Never heard of them before so I looked it up and it's 50 bucks on Amazon. I'm getting one right now.
I've been liking the G Shock Mudmen series, but there's just so much extra shit I simply wouldn't need.
I require a backlight, not that worthless light that shines and you still can't read shit. Solar powered, and then all the usual helpful stuff.
Stuff like knowing the cycles of the moon just aren't useful to me personally in a watch
>>52661411
>that cut off 3
>titanium
>PVD
Fucking garbage get the 38mm or whatever size it is that doesn't have the awful cut off number, and get a normal plain steel one. PVD is tacticool and not durable at all, titanium is worse than steel for watches in my opinion because it's easier to scratch.
I like the Khaki line though, they're pretty nice. If you want to look into another alternative the Seiko SARG007 is a slightly different style field watch and it's around the same price and stuff, it's automatic though and I don't know if maybe you specifically want a handwinding movement for authenticity or thinness. There's also the Marathon General Purpose Mechanical if you want something more military and with tritium tubes, but I think it costs more than it should and it's pretty ugly.

>>52662101
In the early 1970s, Suwa Seikosha had already ceased producing high end mechanical watches, and Daini Seikosha realized they would have one last stab at created an automatic movement to leave for posterity's sake.
This led to the development of Daini's 52xx caliber, featuring 28,800 bph, quickset day/date using the crown, instantaneous day/date change at midnight, adjustable beat corrector, rack and pinion micro-adjuster, bi-directional winding, etc.
For their last hurrah they created a final variant of this movement for the final King Seiko model, and then adjusted it to GS standards in the form of the 1975 King Seiko 5256-8010.
And I found it for 170 maple syrup bux!

>>52662793
>Has anyone actually bought one before?
I was the first, spammed pics and trolled the fuck out a dead /wtg/ with it.
Good times.
Build quality is good, cyclops has good magnification (have since bought a Steinhart and those have shit magnification by comparison, ended up selling it because I don't need two Submariner homages), only downside is the kerning, but it'snot noticeable unless you hold your watch six inches away from your face.
Someone wanted pictures of the movement. So this is the 6S37B movement, mostly the same as the 6S37A you find lots of pictures of online. Main difference is the quality of finishing, the type of finishing (tokyo stripes instead of colimaconnage) and the rhodium plating.
From this image you can see the adjustment screw. This is something we haven't talked about much. Low end watches tend to use a small arm that you can poke with something like a match stick back and forth to help adjust the watch on the most basic level and that's mostly all you can do. We have guys using apps like wildspectra to see how their watch is running in different positions and making small adjustments to see if they can improve the timing by making it more accurate and by making sure whatever bias does exist tends towards running fast (better to be early than late.)
On this particular movement you can see an etachron-style fine adjustment screw (not sure if they have a particular name for it, other than etachron for Seiko).
If you're interested in watch regulation you could google a couple things including etachron, watch regulation, microstella (rolex patent) and gyromax (patek patent.)
Also this is the only decent picture I got, the rest were fuzzy.

The first dive watch my father gave me would be something I would like. He actually took me diving and taught me how to use a driver's bezel and how important a watch is to a diver (dive computers were not in significant use for recreational diving yet.)
I believe that watch got lost during a move when I still lived with my parents. It was not a watch of significant cost or quality, but I would get get a lot out of having it again.
Other than that there's a number if pieces I would love to own, and it would be extremely hard to pick just one. Not only would it be hard to pick one because then I'd be giving up other watches, but I'd be stuck with just that. Something like a Zeitwerk minute repeater would be amazing, but is actually pretty large and heavy to have as an only watch.
Immediately the patek 5396 comes to mind, one of my favorite pateks, and one of my favorite annual calendars. A complicated piece with a shockingly uncomplicated dial. But could I only wear just that? I think I might actually be more comfortable in something like a 15202, a two hander with date, but in an angular steel case and bracelet with blue dial making it sporty, but has a touch of elegance.
Or dare I say it, if I had my choice of any watch to be my one watch, it might be.. Another Grand Seiko.

Your taste in Credors may be questionable but at least you can pick good Pateks to lust over.
I really like the Nautilus and yet I just fucking hate the RO and I don't know why. I guess maybe just the bad association with the ROO line and my general dislike for AP or something.
>>52664283
>AP
literally only has one design. the Patek Nautilus is a better Royal Oak than the Royal Oak
>>52664283
It's got a pretty amazing and historically interesting movement. That rotor, which so very thin, is held against that rail and then much of the weight loaded all at the very end, which allows it to so darn thin. You would expect this sort of thin movement to normally only be attempted as manual wind or with a micro-rotor. This is some really well done stuff here.
I think it's a fantastic watch. And if I got a couple weeks wrist time with it, I might be willing to say if I could have it as an only watch (not that I would ever really want to have an only watch.)

A rack and pinion micro-adjuster as used by some Seikos accomplishes precisely the same goal as a swan neck regulator. I see no technical justification to act like one type is superior to the other.

Pic sexy but unrelated.
>>52663312
The LM Special is a very nice and underrated watch, and it shares the 52xx movement family, but it isn't quite equivalent to Daini's last automatic hurrah.
The 5256 version of the 52KS was only produced for one year and was literally intended from the ground up as Daini's final statement of mechanical watchmaking ability for the ages.
It was manufactured and factory adjusted to GS+ levels by the same people at Daini who had worked on the Daini produced GS models (e.g. 45GS)
>>52659392
Yeah i'm here anon, i'll put up the listing in the next few minutes.

Alright, autismo-kun. What I mean is that they're meant for military use, Marathons conform to the US Army spec. Same way as the Speedy Pro is a legit space watch, Russians, ESA and others might wear better watches, but the Speedy Pro is NASA certified for spaceflight and EVA-s.
>>52668344
Those plastic marathons look like was and fall apart though.
>>52668442
They're some kind of fiber composite that Marathon calls "fibreshell". I assume it's fiberglass and resin, which is pretty tough, the Soviets used to make tank armor out of that stuff.

Funny you should mention the Seikos in Nam, considering they became so popular with soldiers because the field watches they were issued were shit and would get flooded and seize up in the jungle. Seiko was a pretty unknown brand to Americans but watches like the 6105 were cheap and worked well so they threw away their OFFICIAL US ARMY MILITARY GRADE WATCH and wore Seikos instead.

Fakes and homages are both pretty shitty. The latter is used as an excuse for the company being incapable of making an original design, so they ape another and save time and money. Unfortunately both fakes and homages are kept going by idiot consumers who cannot aim any higher or think to get something with an original design in their price range.

there are good clothes, but indeed price is no guarantee
anyway, go buy a tailor-made suit or anything from a good place and tell me that shit ain't high quality (and it'll actually fit ya)
for ready-made clothes, one just needs to try different ones and research them to find something that is good. generally speaking, this "good" is priced somewhere between "cheap" and "high fashion" - that is, indeed it ain't the most expensive stuff you can buy, but neither is it cheap.

The Steinhart is nice, but it's bigger (not an issue for me), pricier and the Cyclops isn't as good.
I ended up selling mine about 2-3 weeks after buying it, I didn't dislike it, I just din't want it.
But it comes down to this:
If Kerning is a MASSIVE issue for you, buy the Steinhart.
If the Cyclops/Size is a MASSIVE issue for you, buy the Tisell.
If both are massive issues for you, save up and get a Rolex.
