Here we answer questions you are to embarassed to ask somewhere else.
Please google your question before asking it here.

I'll start off.
What's the difference between a signed and unsigned char in C?

I'm trying to use AMD's VSR to run games at 1440p on my 1080p monitor, but I can't set the games' resolution to 1440p unless I also change the resolution in Windows

What certs should everyone have? Also, I don't want to attend an actual university. I tried but ended up falling horribly ill for the first semester. Is online schooling a good option and what would you recommend?
>>
>>52559417
Probably not.
Just makes the whole thing more heavy.
If it would fall from your table for example it would have more energy upon impact endagering the parts inside.
I don't know if the fact that they're ERA plates would help in any way.

Okay, take 2. Is there a recommended comic/manga reader for Mint?
>>
>>52559462
Good point. I still like the idea of trying it just for the sake of it to see it it'd save it from a small caliber round such as a .22LR or a 9mm.
>>
>>52559258

Chars are just bytes. Bytes are just 8-bit integers.

This is a signed 8-bit integer
+3

This is another
-2

This is an unsigned 8-bit integer
4

There are 2^8 possible unsigned 8-bit integers (in the range [0, (2^8)-1] = [0,255])
There are 2^7 possible signed 8-bit integers (in the range [-(2^7)-1, +(2^7)-1] = [-127,127])

I'm about to choose between: Bachelor of Information Technology and Bachelor of Computer Science. I'm being forced into going to university but all I want to do is program, run linux and build websites. My university offers the following major sequences: in CS cloud computing, cognitive science and data science. However, I can major in programming and web design in IT. I just want a good paying office job really can I get it from majoring in programming and website design or will I have to go with CS?

So I've had this 650W ThermalTake PSU since about 2011, when I had a guy help me with a PC build.
I'm building a new computer now, and I've read that ThermalTake PSUs should be of low quality, my PSU is rated gold though.

Is there a risk that this apparently "low quality" PSU could blow components in my new system? (or is the risk high enough that I should consider getting a new PSU?)

You're right senpai, it's been a long week.

Im going to be using it primarily for uni related things such as notes, streaming, watching movies. As well as some casual gaming and older titles, meaning I don't expect to run all the recent games at high or anything.

Even so, the better performance I can get out of it for money thats worth it, then I definitely will.

So is the i5-5200u/ 5500 gpu to i5-6200u/ 520 gpu worth a price increase? Or is it so similar that you probably won't be able to tell a difference?

Would 4 vs 8 gigs of ram be a higher priority?
>>
>>52561932
>Does the style in which you program a website effect its overall security?
Actually, it can affect security. Some "styles" are more error prone. For example if you use Yoda conditions, it is not possible to make this error:
if($password = "somesecretvalue"){
// user authenticated
}

notice the assignment operator. If someone uses Yoda conditions, this would be an error. Now this is an always true condition

>Do hackers have a way of seeing your websites source code?
Yes, anyone can see the source code of the client side (html, javascripts and css). Normally they can't see the backend source code.

I'm currently studying system and network engineering at a university of applied sciences (HBO in Dutch) and I have to start an internship soon. My uni has a company database from which to pick a company (if I don't do that they have to be rated by the uni) for interning at, but most if not all of them are web-design oriented with some making a left turn to Java.

Now I don't have a problem with web design or development, even if it doesn't really relate to what I study, but it's been 6 years since I actually worked with anything close to PHP or Javascript.

How do I tell a company that I'm actually still learning? And what can I do to get my web dev skills (Or Java, even though I'm not too fond of java and would rather have C# or C++) slightly up in at least 1 week?

the unpartitioned space can be partitioned and used, yes.
the "missing" space (at least whay I think you're talking about) is because Windows counts sizes as powers of two and hard drive manufacturers count them as powers of ten, since this makes their drives look bigger than they are.

You definitely need a firewall. Then close all ports you don't need.
Make sure your OS and installed packages are up to date.
If you're using SSH make sure that's secured.
Other than that it depends on what you're running on the server.

I got a networking question.

This is a HD picture of the relevant part of my current network infrastructure.

I have the Raspberry Pi as a seedbox.
Problem is that my WiFi kills itself when it has many connections, so I have to limit the number of connections (15 nonetheless).

This results in absurdly low speeds.

Now, I'd like to add some hardware somewhere in the middle to have both my PC and the RPi connected via Ethernet.

I could take the Ethernet cable out of my PC and connect it to a router, but I don't know if the 'primary' router will still be able to forward ports to the RPi if I do that.

the switch just redirects, it doesn't give or take IPs.
dumb switches (hubs) just broadcast on every port, packages on the wrong destination just get dismissed by the receiver.

I don't know if you guys remember about a question that I made very late on the last thread about a PC failing to boot and starting right when I switched the PSU to on.

Well, I 'fixed' the problem and it was because the case I bought was custom made by the shop, so one of the cables (the power switch cable to be exact) must be malfunctioning, my guess is that they welded the cable wrong or something, so I changed the MOBO to another case and it's working fine. So if this ever happens to you, try having an older case just to test.

Thanks to the people that helped me here though, it wasn't anything that you recommended, but it helped to rule out things.

I have one of these things lying around: http://www.cnet.com/products/hp-compaq-dc5100-pentium-4-640-3-2-512mb-ram-40gb-hdd-windows-xp-pro/#p=hp-compaq-dc5100-pentium-4-640-3-2-512mb-ram-40gb-hdd-windows-xp-pro/

Is it worth upgrading individual parts to make it a more modern computer or should I just make a new build from scratch?
>>
>>52566348
What DE are you using? Mint comes with quite a few. Can you include a screenshot?

>>52566361
Try with an 'buntu live CD, see if you get the same issue. If you do, hardware problem.
>>
>>52566370
there is literally not a single thing in that computer that I would use even if it were free
>>
>>52566361
does it have a "print test page" button?
>>
>>52566370
Modern parts aren't compatible, generally speaking. What do you want to do with it?
>>
>>52566370
In all honesty, either use it for background jobs (Non-urgent video codding, downloads, storage) or give it to some poor kid who can't afford one.
>>
>>52566391
Yes, already tested and it werks.
I had to use a different driver because this thing is that old and hp has deleted the support page, found the guide on the hp forum
>>52566379
'buntu because it bypasses the driver magic?

In Java, why use abstract over interface, and why use interface over abstract?

I have huge white balls in my ballsack surface

when I squeeze white jizz comes out of them

wat do
>>
>>52566469
can only speak for C#:

interfaces don't implement anything, abstract classes have some stuff implemented and some stuff required to be implemented by your derived class.

I assume it's the same for java.

if you have a decent hdd lying around you can turn it into a seed-box or even a shitty NAS.
run puppy linux or xubuntu on it though, or anything lighter.

Yeah that was the initial plan because something went fucky when I moved and I can't remember why it doesn't work anymore, too bad the molded empty trays don't have space for a normal hdd

I'm mostly worried about the hardware compatibility. If I just swap out motherboards, won't my Windows installation break?
>>
>>52566771
Windows is installed on one of the hard drives. Unless, for some reason, you can't boot from the drive, you should be fine.
>>
>>52566771
windows probably will have issues, but all are google-tier resolvable.

UltraHD or UHD should be right name but the majority of fucktards went with 4K for whatever the fuck reason

saying 2160p (twentyone sixty p) is fine as well
>>
>>52566798

I'm mostly just worried about drivers and junk.

I have AzureROM on my Galaxy Note 3 because there was no official CM release as of yet.
I'm on AzureROM 4.something, and I recently checked and saw that they're now on 6.0, but... I don't know how to upgrade. How do I do that?

Is it a simple matter of downloading the latest version, putting it on my SD card, booting into Recovery Mode and selecting the .zip/whatever file to install?

Quick question about some MIPS assembly

Say for example that I want the address of $t0 stored in $a0
How do I go about loading the _address_ of one register into another?
What instruction do I use?

# What do I write here to get the address into $a0?
li $v0,4 # Print String
syscall

I have been having the weirdest problem with chrome on my desktop. Recently sometimes when I load pages it doesnt load all the way so I get a white page with features and text everywhere. Other times I get the "Page cannot be displayed" like i have no internet, a refresh fixes it. Other times my page is littered with broken thumbnails. This is on a computer connected via Ethernet too

What hardware monitor does everyone use?
>>
>>52567213

After some experimenting I am starting to think that registers don't have addresses. Am I correct on that? Anyways I found a workaround where I can print a character instead of the whole string. I think I've been at this for too long...
>>
>>52566771
there is a free software you can run that cleans all drivers and such so that you'll have a greater chance of successfully migrating your installation to a new motherboard. i used it with no problems

not sure if this is what i used but it might help
